He had basically a morning on shore to look for the colonists and when they weren't there, the ship's captain said "There's a storm coming. We're leaving. Come with us now or stay here on your own." John White was 60 years old. He really had no choice but to go.

Theory: The colonists moved in with the natives and decided to carve their destination into the tree - but not a cross - because they were under relatively "mild" threat from other tribes in the area. Drama between local native american tribes forced colonists and the natives to group tighter together into a single village for protection. The villagers, being armed with guns, weren't all that worried about inter-tribe fighting, so they decided to split the difference and carve "CROATAN" into nearby trees and the fort wall, but skip the cross.

This as got to be my favorite mystery.i had.a teacher gave us a project on this and however made th best theory with evidence got a prize. The winner was a theory that kind of made sense. He said that after possibly a long winter and bad harvest they lost massive numbers. After. A last ditch effort they went to natives for help but they were seen as attackers and the natives attacked back and the villagers fled and took anything they could, while the natives took the rest that they wanted and NEEDED to get them away as a reason to not thanked the guns as they didn’t like them

I cant believe that everyone here has missed something that is so obvious, the word Croatoan relates to Croatia. If you google Croatoan and Croatians there is so much evidence that points to Croatian sailors, who were some of the best sailors in the world with great ships to rival many of the English, Dutch, Spanish and Portugese vessels. If you google Croatoan and Croatians, read as many articles there as you wish, all evidence points to Croatian connections. The fact that Indian tribes in that region even use Croatian words in their language is truly amazing. Also, DNA testing of Indians in the region showed percentages of Croatian DNA. I have done so much research myself on this and concluded that it is most likely 100% Croatian.

I have a theory. The man who died died of starvation and the Roanoke knew they couldn’t carry on or they all would die. So they moved into the Croatian territory and left a marking on the tree telling where they were going and they lived out their days there. My father always said that he believes that Lumbees from Robeson county in North Carolina came from the lost colony. You see so many natives w brown skin, dark thick hair, yet have blue eyes. Always believed that to be true, if the colony did leave with the natives who’s to say this isn’t so?

There is also another story that is rarely if ever talked about. There were Maroons who had been exported as slaves into areas of Florida. As many of them rebelled, they formed allies with, and in many instances, cohabited the Seminoles. As they learned the land, many moved up from the Florida territory and on into what is now the Carolinas and Virginia areas including Roanoke. Some believe that those settlers eventually mixed in with this same group as well for their own survival.
