wow super informative. Being a new samsung user, new to android as well, (die hard apple fan here just thought i should give android a chance ) i always wondered why rooting trips knox, thus rendering mobile pay useless. This video helped me understand the sensitivity of that information. using Samsung Pay I would definitely not want my banking information comprised by 3rd party apps or anyone at that. of course not everyone gets hacked but we aren't immune to it either and rooting creates this sort of back door to possibly malicious people/developers. It just gives us another reason to be careful about these privileges. thanks for the awesome video!

Gary - nice overview. I am of the pro-root opinion. The first phone I rooted was the Note2 , which I rooted to gain multi-window access for all apps - not just the ones Samsung thought I should use. The ability to gain root access is a go/no go for me to consider purchasing a phone. I'm on AT&T, so the GN2 was the last Samsung phone I purchased - even though I like Samsung's hardware. Went to M8, OPO, and Nexus 6 largely because of ease of root (OK, the M8 was a bit of a pain to root & S-off, but at least HTC was cooperative in unlocking bootloader.) Of course, one needs to read, watch videos, and take care when rooting, but I enjoy the freedom I gain with root.

Hello Gary, Just watched your video "what is root?" Just a few questions. Along with the comment you made about servers collecting data from the phone, what about an encrypted device? Would this be the way to go? I have read in our Cybersecurity and forensics courses that it is possible to root a phone for one-time access. If Access is needed again, then the phone could be rooted again without system damage. Is this true? If this possible what about disabling WIFI on the device? Therefore, no information could be sent to servers around the world. I am thinking it would be the same thing as Doing a malware Analysis on a Virtual machine using a host only network (VMware). What say you? Thanks :) P.s. Keep up the great work. You are AWESOME!

I liked the video for the simplicity and clarity but i got a tiny info to add. Su was born as super user and was just used to use bash as root same was for sudo which is super user do that allowed people to execute certain commands as root without the necessity of an active root shell. An feature is introduced then to let you use both of them to substitute the user but the name for legacy should be super user or super user do.

Ahmad Elbadri OK, so I have done some more research, it looks like this: su has always meant "substitute user." Sudo seems to have meant superuser do to start and then substitute user do later. I have read the source code for sudo version 1.1 circa 1991 (cis-linux1.temple.edu/~giorgio/cis307/software/sa-book/sudo/sudo.c) and it doesn't specifically mention "superuser" or "substitute user." I am a root user (but not only root, also Xposed framework) and I installed it with the 4th way. I flashed a custom recovery via a usb cord over the pc via a bootloader from the manufacturer (SPflashtool). With this custom recovery I was able to flash the root binaries. The funny thing about it, is that I used nearly the same technique (boot the system of an nintendo ds flash card using an manufacturer method) in order to to install an otf patcher (called cfw although it is not) to my nintendo 3ds. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custom_firmware#Nintendo_3DS) It gains me "root access" so full access to everything on the device. What a funny coincidence!

There are a lot of problems in this video. -SEAndroid and SELinux has been creating granular permissions on Android since 2012. You also didn't mention groups. There are a lot of groups on Android for tasks like wifi, or GPS that allow sharing and access between unprivileged apps without root. SELinux creates whitelists and allows users (apps) to operate in their domains without the possibility of access to other domains. -You can't read all the data on the system, try poking around in the /sys folder and you will run into issues. -sudo has a -u switch to allow you to execute as any user on the system -Root can't always change the system files. If the kernel is securely configured, it won't be able to do so. -Titanium Backup uses the old methods. You don't need root anymore www.technorms.com/39708/android-backup-4-best-options . Had you said you wanted to explore certain things on the system, that would be valid. -All typed screens showed a standard user prompt $ not a root prompt #. Even the first one that said you were root. $ is a standard user. I gave you a thumbs up for trying. There's always room for improvement, but I do take open source seriously so I felt it necessary to provide this criticism constructively.
@omnia5-98 жыл бұрын
dang dude I'm pretty sure he knows all of this, he isn't talking to people like you who know open source code and the great #sudo command. He is talking to the people who don't know jack shit about code nor linux for that matter. This is out of context, and is by no means a constructive argument.
@AdamOutler8 жыл бұрын
It's not an argument. It's a matter of researching before making a public statement.
@omnia5-98 жыл бұрын
Adam Outler hey why did you delete the other guy's comment pretty much summed up what you are. And he did research or maybe called it off the top of his head, because I am 100 percent sure that Gary knows more than you buddy. Again he did not have to go truly in depth its not a step by step full content review and instructions to rooting. Its a quick and fairly knowledgeable look to rooting, stop being that type of nerd everyone hates. Lol
@AdamOutler8 жыл бұрын
I was doing this type of youtube video on this topic back when some of what Gary said was true. It's no longer true. I made several videos on this. I like Gary's content usually. He started when I stopped. I kinda feel like he carries my torch. However it has to be done right and correct information should be given... Otherwise he's going to get the same treatment I got when I made a video with incorrect information.
@omnia5-98 жыл бұрын
Adam Outler wtf is wrong with you? Or are you some special type of person that can't understand what he reads, cause seriously third fourth time telling you this video is for computer illiterates. He says truths throughout the whole video thats why your constructive criticism only adds things he should do not what he did wrong cause he did nothing wrong except for having the character wrong when using the sudo command. What torch? Lmao you had no more than 3k viewers which isn't bad but you see gary under AA has 2 million people in his audience..lol i saw your video about rooting an oppo do you see what i said last time fits here? Your video is a step by step instructional video which has to be as deep as your mothers pussy. So you got hate because you probably did something that did not work as advertised and got schooled for it.. you know this video also goes through AA editors right they make sure what he says is true. And dont compare yourself to gary you are not even remotely close to the flame he carries lol he has been writing for tech journals for more 10 years bro he knows what he is talking about so it more like your trying to light your torch with his flame lol

I am in favour of root, but only if you know the risks. And knowing the risks means not relying on your phone to do important and secret tasks, like you companies emails or accessing your bank account. I think the root and unlocking the bootloader should be easier, in the way you should be able to do it by accessing USB debugging, for example, but not out-of-the-box. This will keep non-experience users away from this, but it will allow more users to make what they want out of their phones.
@hitardo8 жыл бұрын
+GamingBoss that is not the point. Maybe I was not clear. The point is: balancing the power to advanced users, while keeping those unexperienced users out. I think OEMs - and Google - should give easy bootloader unlocking and root access - through a computer terminal, for example - that can help the users chooser their OS and customize as they like. But, at the same time, not allowing a user with few touches on the screen to gain access. Users like my mother, my aunt or my girlfriend, who sometimes click on some things they should not. A method that requires intention, like connecting to a PC and downloading a specific tool and run a command. This would keep out of the root those who do not want it, do not know it or are not careful; while at the same time allowing people who want it to do it.
@liranpiade44998 жыл бұрын
I don't think it should require a PC. I think it should require unlocking Development settings, and then still be hidden.

1: First backup everything you need to 2: Search for adb installation on pc (need pc or laptop) 3(a): Unlock bootloader (b): You need to search how to do that online usually requires a code that samsung will send you that will void warranty ( you'll need to do it through pc adb if you remember you installed it earlier) 4: Now you have unlocked bootloader you can now install a recovery software usually twrp is good for it search how to install it 5: Now you can flash anything keep your one ui or change it to whichever rom you prefer 6: unlocking bootloader is not root if you want to root you need to flash magisk or super su after you've installed twrp 7: once you've flashed magisk or supersu now you're rooted. INTERNET WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH ALL THE STEPS ABOVE ALWAYS BEWARE BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING AND ENJOY AS NOW YOUR DEVICE IS TRULY UNDER YOUR CONTROL

Are frameroot and kingroot are safe?

Kingroot is safe, as long as the device and android version are supported. I've never tried frameroot.
