What Is Samadhi and How Can I Attain It?

The first time I dissolved into samadhi, I gave myself boundless time…I could sit there the entire day in meditation if I wanted. But I did not set out to attain anything. That’s. A sure fire way of preventing dissolving oneself to uncover samadhi/pure awareness. I sat and breathed and rested between the breaths in the heart space. Over and over and over. Flow down and down in ever widening rings of being…each breath is a ring descending into the heart. And then rest as it settles into the heart. The body and mind will over time release tensions through yawning, shivers, tears, belly rumbles…go right through that. Right through. Stay put. Stay sitting. You are on the right path. You will notice that the breathing gets more spaced apart. Keep going. Do not look for anything. So not expect anything. Any effects you see or feel, just say thank you. And go back to resting in Being. In the heart. It’s like labour, when you think you can’t do anymore, stay. That is the mind trying to stop its annihilation. Come out of the head and stay with the breath down in the body. I have several meditations which lead here if anyone is interested, google my name. 😊

That last one reminds me of when I was still a teenager in old New York City, before becoming a shaven-head renunciate vegetarian monk for a while. I remember ordering three or sometimes four of those Hebrew National hot dogs with “the works” and a can of Coke for a couple of bucks, off the carts, and being the happiest teen in the world. That was before placing enlightenment over hot dogs. I might have taken the wrong choice at the fork in the road. (LOL) And, please don’t tell me to grab some tofu hot dogs on a whole wheat bun. Just not the same. But, it does have some nostalgic gratification, until the taste registers. Hebrew National Kosher Hot Dogs, as I further and further digress from, and humiliate this all-important thread, had one of the greatest advertising commercials of all time. It was just irresistible. They had Uncle Sam smiling and enjoying a regular standard American brand hot dog, and then they started narrating that the USDA allows all sorts of garbage into their hot dogs, but “Hebrew National Kosher Hot Dogs, answers to a higher authority.(God) A really great and funny, thought-provoking commercial, especially since they never mentioned “God,”but just showed “The Light.” It actually insinuated to this young religious teenager that eating a kosher hot dog brings you to the realm of The Almighty. I can attest that eating kosher hot dogs doesn’t stamp your ticket to the Divine. But, I can also attest to the fact that long fasting, and strict adherence to the zen Macrobiotic austere number 7 diet, also does not merit the Divine.

Dear people, Rupert has mixed things up at 4:28 Traditionally, there are three types of Samadhis - *Savikalpa, Nirvikalpa and Sahaja* If there's a duality to the Samadhi, it's called Savikalpa. A duality-less Samadhi is Nirvikalpa. Because *Vikalpa* itself means alternative in Sanskrit. If one effortlessly lives in a Samadhi state, it's called Sahaja (Sahaj means effortless in Sanskrit). But Rupert is describing Savikalpa as Sahaja! I can see that he genuinely wants to share his knowledge with everyone. But what ultimately matters is whether he has touched *the 3 states* or not.

I interpret these 3 "modes of experience" as.. Savikalpa Samadhi = trance, ecstasy, kensho, glimpsing, describable, touched and back again - like the experience of **visiting** heaven or pure Being. Nirvikalpa Samadhi = true or essential nature, boundless, infinite, beyond qualities or description, objectless. This is what is "visited" in Savikalpa but without or beyond any self-other duality. Sahaj Samadhi = the **recognition** that all dualities have always been resolved. Sahaj Samadhi is the actual "stage" (permanent recognition) of wholeness within the appearance of duality. * Please, dont trust only my words.. I apologize if you or anyone reading this are in doubt about anything I said and I encourage you/them to continue study, practice (experience), and ask a Dharma teacher (guru). Both are the ways to samadhi. To ignore & to Watch Toughts continuously. But thought is a part of yourself. It is better to Watch the illusion rather than running away. Because running away can't clear the illusion but temporary ignoring. Like in Deep sleep state. BUT Permanent freedom lies in continuous watching thoughts arising & subsiding like waves in the Ocean!

Sam - all/every/total Dhi - contemplation Contemplation of everything, including the self, non-distinct from all apparently other things. Sit in stillness and silence (noises of the world notwithstanding) every day for long enough and you will blossom into it. No more questions then.

there are two eternal principles. Purusha that is You and Praktiti that is everything else..nirvikalpa samadhi is separating Purusha from Prakriti..... and the Self (Purusha) is all there is in nirvikalpa samadhi, sahaji samadhi is after separating the two, they come back together and You are Awake to it All.. the chances of someone reaching nirvikalpa samadhi is like 1 in a billion..its like a lottery or a race or competition...in order to reach nirvikapla samadhi you have to stop the thought waves in the mind...you have to do spiritual practices....what makes it exraordinay is its rarity...the Self that we all are is just simple Energy..its just really difficult to remove ALL the stuff that makes up creation and the experiences your having to know exactly what you are...peace peace

What she's asking about she doesn't want to experience, she just doesn't know it. Being in the presence of the Divine is such an overwhelming thing. It is so holy that you don't want to unite with that. It would destroy you from its purity. You are better off experiencing it's presence and knowing that everything is ok than trying to unite with that thing. Because that is like diving into the Sun. You won't survive that. If you can stare at a point without distraction or deviation of your gaze towards the content of the mind, whether thought or images, for 1 minute, then YOU HAVE ALREADY REACHED SAMADHI!!! The state of samadhi is like you are watching a movie or a dream. You do not need to become enlightened because enlightenment entails a subject that wants to obtain it and the object that is the illumination that one wants to achieve speaking of non-duality. There is only the being. Your consciousness is trapped in the gross body. Trapped in the sense of identified, subjected or enslaved to desires. The desire to not be behind the screen observing but to be a participant in the content of the mind, within the mind-body. Everything is mental creation, except consciousness which remains unchanged. I do not want to offend anyone but the reality is such that you have chosen this and not to be the witness, that is, the consciousness.

It is monotonous. Not in the sense of being tediious but in the sense of being an undifferentiated monotone - like a white field (and you are that field and only that field). That is what it is like. There are lower levels of samadhi than this of course (that are tied up with objects etc) as Rupert explains.

This, what has been. Explained is not Samadhi, when we talk of Samadhi in Yoga. its generally excepted that we are talking about, the first Samadhi, because until the first is reaches you are not going to reach the non dual SAMADHI which is second and last, the first Samadhi is achieved through concentration, which is Key to the whole of Yoga, and the Practice of Dhyana is what we do to reach Samadhi, and concentrating down to one thought and holding that thought without any other thought penetrating into that holding, is how it is done, when a certain amount of holding concentration is achieved, meaning you can hold one thought for around 45 minutes without any other thought penetrating into that holding, consistantly, then Samadhi will take place, it will follow you out of meditation as a permanent state, of superconciousness in a state of superconcentration, this is Samadhi, turning the I into IAM, when the thought being held is the I thought, when it is held long enoght for it to become permement, then it become IAM, it is nothing at all until one starts to concentrate hold and establish the I, which is the consciousness space between the thought from holding. This is how you establish this I concousness, without which you are only talking about it, and this is just thought in words. You have to establish consciousness or awareness if you want to call it that, normally you are at the thinking thought, sense conciousness level, with a bit of interlect thrown in, once Samadhi is attained one moves conciousness from sense consciousness to IAM Samadhi conciousness which is above all of the former., and is the only means to achieving the non Dual SAMADHI.
