😀 A BIT ABOUT US:
We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

You're becoming biscuit connoisseurs. Great looking food in that restaurant. Such a friendly atmosphere in Savannah. It occurred to me that the Spanish moss can't be too problematic or else the council (or whatever they call it there) wouldn't want to risk expensive lawsuits and would have it all removed. I love pecans, always a delicious treat when my neighbours return from the US.

How funny, to see the sights and the foods I take for granted through your eyes. Huge all you can eat menus, pedal pubs. I live in Connecticut now, but I grew up in Florida. I'm so glad you avoided the Spanish moss and itchy chiggers (red bugs). I wonder if you heard the story about how Spanish moss came about. A Spanish conquistador was chasing a beautiful native woman and got his long beard caught in the tree. The woman got away and he had a very hard time getting free. His beard stayed behind as a warning. I think the Lady and Sons is a Paula Deen restaurant. That amazing southern lady loves her butter. No wonder you got so full, so fast. I can't wait to see the rest of your travels through the USA . Amazing how different yet the same people can be. Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride. Safe travels.

The river boats gave us some sayings in the US. People back in the day that had money were called high flutin’. At the very top of the steamboat were 2 large rooms for guests. They are the farthest from the turbines so they are the quietest rooms for sleeping. These were the most expensive per night. Only the wealthy could afford to travel in those. They were built around the 2 smoke stacks called flutes, so you were high flutin’ to stay in those rooms. You had money.

I live in Tampa and just some small advice here. If you like southern fried chicken, head to a Publix grocery store and head to the deli and get their fried chicken. It's the best chicken you'll ever taste, even better than Lady and Sons. As far as spanish moss, it's okay to live with but not fun picking up when you have to. Hope to see you in Tampa or hereabouts!

A weird thing I’ve found in the US is driving across it east to west or west to east is passing through different time zones. A while ago on a trip I travelled through three time zones and obviously had to reset my watch three times. It felt strange resetting my watch and but still being in the same country, makes you realise just how big the US is.

Such a lovely tour of Savannah! The south is also well known for chicken and waffles. I never understood the combination until I had the best in Arizona. If you happen to make it to Tucson Arizona, you must go to The Drunken Chicken to try their chicken and waffles!! Also, while you are there, if you happen upon any street fair or festival, try fresh made churro's from any street vendor (melt in your mouth fried sweet and crunch goodness!)

You asked the old farts about Rt. 66 and I thought I'd my two cents. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the entire route, or even most of it. Instead, I'd do bits of it when it was near much more interesting places. There are several KZbin videos of the road and they'd give you a good idea of what's really worth seeing. Think of the US like Turkey, so many wonderful places to see but three times as big.

Live in Indiana but have visited Savannah several times. Last we were there was 2018 though. Went around April as well to get away from the cold of Indiana and to avoid the heat and humidity of Georgia. Pleasant visit each time. Savannah always has something new to share. The people were great too... polite and friendly. Actually, Georgia was like that. Have to visit again when things settle down a bit... we miss Savannah!

Wow, I can't get over you being able to just walk into The Lady and Sons! I live in NY and visited Savannah three different times over the years. Every time I went to that restaurant there was a super long line. I can't stand for long periods so I had to pass it up. I'll try again though the next time I'm down that way. I used to watch Paula Deen on TV all the time. We used to live about an hour from a Savannah back in the late 1980s, but I didn't know much about Savannah then.

Two very popular casseroles you will find throughout the US are broccoli rice cheese casserole and green bean casserole. Different cooks usually top them with either crushed Ritz crackers, buttered, or crispy fried onions. French's Crispy Fried Onions are in cans at the grocery store. Those pretty pedestrian iron bridges next to the river street was where buyers would stand & make bids on cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar cane loaded on horse drawn carts that paraded underneath their feet. Once the highest bids were accepted, goods were quickly loaded onto the ships docked one street over. The cobblestones underfoot were ship ballast left behind from other countries that came in to buy Savannah crops. Many stones from British port cities.

You dont want to be in a vehicle during a hurricane. On a holiday to Florida in 2005, I had to drive back to our hotel when Hurricane Wilma hit land. Wilma is the second largest hurricane on record to hit the USA. That was the most scary drive of my life.

@@TREADtheglobe It was terrifying at the time. Driving down middle lane of a 5 lane highway. Constantly turning left and being pushed right. Just me and my 5 year old daughter returning from the night show at Seaworld. Wilma hit while we were watching the show and I had to wade through 12 inches of fast flowing water across the carpark with my daughter in my arms. Spent the next 24 hours in the hotel room. Wilam knocked out the entire infrastructure of the Florida Keys for a month. They had no electric, water, phone or internet. We were lucky and everything was back to normal within 2 days and we carried on having a nice holiday for another 10 days.

Im so glad I found your channel ! Not sure what your route is, but if you’re continuing down the coast check out “Boneyard Beach” on Big Talbot Island past Jacksonville, Fl and then spend a day in st. Augustine! Oldest city on the east coast. Before putting roots in Charleston, sc I traveled all over USA

Great vlog! We visited the Prohibition Museum, where you end up in a 'Speakeasy' Cocktail Bar! Then we went to the restaurant opposite and had Peach Pie. We did the Georgia Queen river trip, but was disappointed it wasn't a real paddle boat! It's a great waterfront. 😊

This is my first time seeing your channel; what a great adventure!!! Welcome to Savannah!!! Yes, you will see alligators here!!! I have Spanish moss in my yard and have never had any problem with critters in it. We don't go to Leopold's much anymore, because the lines are so long! It looks like you had a fun visit here and I look forward to watching more of your videos!!! 💜💜💜

I'm sure you've already heard of Harvest Hosts. RV Camping at 2834+ Wineries, Breweries, Farms & Attractions That Invite RVers to Stay Overnight. It does have a membership fee of $99 per year. But a lot of KZbinrs seem to use it.

Loved seeing the park in Savannah - that beautiful fountain is iconic. And those biscuits!!! Watching you eat those literally made my mouth water :) Looks like you are having fun and good weather too. I don't think you need to worry too much about hurricanes this time of the year. Tornadoes yes, but hurricanes no. They usually come later in the late summer and autumn. Alligators can be found in the most southern states where the winter weather is milder - from S. Carolina down to FL, through GA, AL, MS, LA and there are alligators in east Texas as well. You might come across them sunning by the banks of rivers and such. If you look carefully you might see them with just their eyes or backs sticking out of still water - they might at first look like floating logs. When we lived in Houston there would be one or two that would even come up onto the city roads looking to find some water or mates or something :)

When you get to Canada, and Ontario specifically: Other $85 fines include: allowing fuzzy dice, dream-catchers or other objects to obscure the view out the front windshield; producing excessive smoke, fumes or noise; having more than four lighted headlamps; failing to lower high beams; not displaying a “right hand drive vehicle” sign for imported cars; failing to leave one metre while passing a bicycle - or unnecessarily slow driving.

A word of caution if I may... You may have noticed that the majority of Americans are overweight. That's because we love our fried foods, breads, sweets and most restaurants give extra large portions so you may want to order one meal and both you and your wife share it. In most places that is perfectly acceptable. Enjoy! Otherwise, you may have to buy a larger van before leaving America. 🙄🙃

Oh man, I wish you would have tried Mrs Wilkes instead. It's a similar concept, except you would have sat with others at a big table. The fried chicken there is at mastery level, as are all the sides. Prob more expensive, but well worth it. A must try if you go back!!!

In defense of the paddle boat, the paddle raises out of the water when not in use. It lowers when it leaves the dock.

There are very small changes you will se alligators on the road, specially on main roads, or highways…I enjoyed my visit to Savannah last year, lots of historical places, and people are very friendly there. Spanish moss is ver up y common in the south, you see it everywhere.

American food portions are much bigger than the portions in Europe. You should think about sharing an order instead of two to avoid gaining weight.
