SEPAC works to support students with special needs and their families. It aims to build partnerships between parents and caregivers, students, the local school district, and the MAISD by improving communication and cooperation. SEPAC members represent their local schools and advise parents and schools. Parents of children with disabilities can contact SEPAC members for help with questions or concerns. Members receive training on the special education process and how to advise parents.
SEPAC members may also participate in special projects, like local resource fairs or creating information materials for parents. They can serve as surrogate parents as required by special education laws. SEPAC provides a formal way for parents to give input on the ISD Plan for Special Education Programs and Services, as required by Michigan’s special education rules.
