Dr. Wael Hallaq, author of Sharī'a: Theory, Practice, Transformations (Cambridge University Press) delivers a three-part lecture series on “What is Sharia?” The series explores three aspects of the Sharia that shed light on the fields of knowledge and practice from which comparative and critical
insights are drawn. This is an exercise in developing comparative law-cum-culture into a critique of modern modes of being.
The first lecture attempts to identify the main features of the relationship between law and ethics in Islam, cast from the perspective of a comparison with modern law. Central problems of moral philosophy as well as conceptual genealogy are utilized to explore the structural interconnections within the
Islamic ethico-legal system that differentiates itself from, and marks it as a contrast to modern law.

Mashallah. Professor Wael Hallaq is rewriting the entire field of Islamic studies not only the Islamic law. He's an inspiration for the future Muslim generation who aims to grow out of the intellectual slavery of the West.

I thank Allah for having given me life concurrent to the phenomenon of Dr Hallaq and the opportunity to witness him. A true Salahuddin of academics and the leader of the intellectual intifada. He has turned my anger at modernity and sorrow of the state of the ummah into a deep rooted hope and positivity for the future. May Allah continue to bless his efforts

شكرا للدكتور وائل حلاق على هذا الطرح الهادف والعميق لمفهوم الحضارة الاسلامية التي جمعت بين الأخلاق والقانون والقوة والسلطة في تناغم كامل. ذلك أن جوهر الشريعة لم يكن منحازا لفئة المشرعين ضد المشرع لهم ولا لطبقة أو جنس أو عرق ضد آخر. أتفق معك د. حلاق بأن ١٨٢٦ كانت بداية التغريب وقتل نظام الأوقاف في عهد محمود الثاني الذي أساء للإسلام وحاول الحداثة مع قطع العلاقة مع جذور الشريعة. أتطلع بشغف لمشاهدة المحاضرة التالية. لك مني كل الاحترام والمحبة وأرجو لك كل النوفيق في هذه الأبحاث الهامة.

Professor Hallaq provides an excellent analysis of the catastrophy the modern world is living today in many different ways. He shows us how the teachings of Islam are a cure for today's ailments.
