First mistake here is that the Bible does not say that every human is made in God's image...it speaks only of Adam, or maybe Eve too....b/c by Genesis 5, humans were now made in their own image. ....second of all, there were the sins of bodily corruption such as leprosy -- which was not a sin against other humans at all....3rd mistake is suggesting that Pharoah did not realize his sins against the Hebrew people -- but he sure understood his edict to decimate their newborn boys...etc, etc, etc, etc....

So it's ok to text and drive and keep doing it? If you hit somebody and harm.somebody because of it, is it not then a.sin? Now if nothing happens, it looks like an innocent compulsion but is reckless. My point is that something innocent because you have not hurt anybody. is a sign of recklessness at least. Is recklessness a characteristic that something that a human being made in the image of God should embrace? Is not recklessness just as bad as being pompous or something like that?

Dear Bible Project, Though I am not myself a Christian, I recently started feeling curious about the Bible as a historical artefact. I went down to my local church and I was very direct about it... I just told the pastor that I was there to learn about the Bible and everyone was very welcoming! Anyway, as of about a month ago, I've been listening to your podcasts and watching your videos, and you are just amazing at what you do! I don't think I'm an unimaginative person, but I don't think I can actually imagine a better study supplement than the one you provide... basically for free! Which I really appreciate because I really do not have much money right now! But I can thank you, at least! Thank you so much! And Merry Christmas!

God bless brother. There are some deep spiritual truths to be found in the Bible. When I first read it I was astonished how much of what it talks about I had experienced in my own spiritual and emotional life. Dig deep and you may find yourself cultivating a relationship with that which is inside of you. A knowing with your body not only your mind. I encourage you, even if not a self professed Christian, or even if you don’t believe in God, to start a regular prayer and meditation practice. It will be the cracking open of the door on which God knocks.

I believe sin is because of pride usually. Pharaoh thinks of himself as more important than justice or kindness matters, so he turns a blind eye to their sufferings. Sin is more like when people are too arrogant to acknowledge their terribleness in flesh, and choose to think the good stuff are from them and not from God Yahweh, so they transgress God's law..

Hamartia, one of the first Greek words I learned in Bible college. 🙂 I like how the Greek word and the Hebrew word both have the same basic idea, that of missing a target, something you're aiming at (or supposed to be aiming at, anyway; sometimes our "sin" is aiming at the wrong target!). This is a good resource. When speaking to non-Christians, I try to stay away from "church" words (or "Christianese"), such as "sin" and "repent" and "iniquity", and instead explain things in words and ideas they would be familiar with (much like your videos are doing). It doesn't help to try to give someone a message if they don't understand the language you're giving it in. So it helps knowing what the "church" words actually mean and where they come from.

Sin is simply anything that separates us from God. Sin isn't simply, well, sinful because God forbids it - it is sinful because the act inherently separates us from the Lord, the Giver of Life.
@user-ez5vq9fd2t
@user-ez5vq9fd2t 6 жыл бұрын
To add on to that, it is not the sin itself that separates us from God. We can't be separated from God, whether we like it or not; He is omnipresent. However, we RUN AWAY from Him because when we sin, we feel guilt and shame from not being able to live up to God's moral perfection. Take, for example, Adam and Eve: what was the first thing they did after they realized their sin? They hid. Was God any farther from them than before? No. In fact, God was the first to reach out to them and ask, "where did you go?" He certainly was aware of their sin, and He certainly knew where they were hiding (He's an omniscient God), so what's His deal here? He pursued them because they ran away in fear of guilt and judgement. As long as the Law is in effect, humanity would be condemned to a religious mindset and continue to distance itself from God. The Good News is that Jesus came so that we could enjoy a full union with God--so that we can run toward Him in full assurance of His love and acceptance instead of running away in fear and shame. The Good News is that God is for us and not against us. The Good News is that God is good and He actually loves us. What kind of parent wants his children to get hurt? When we sin, it's less about "hurting" God, as if God can't handle our sin or as if it will upset Him. The reason God hates sin is because sin destroys His children--it harms them. A loving Father would never want His children to suffer. God created the world, and He knows what is best for us. When He says "don't sin", it's for our benefit, as a good Father only wants the best for His children. Remember: God created Adam and Eve to simply enjoy life with Him in Eden; that has been His desire since the beginning. Sin destroyed that, but Jesus, in turn, destroyed sin and death so that we can once again be fully reconciled to God and enjoy fellowship with Him now and forever in the new Eden.

Here's a good way to explain 'sin' with one word... imperfection. Problem is this, for centuries people have been taught that sin is something people do and they think no further on the subject. Think about this though... what is the very nature of the material universe? Do things constantly change? Of course... trees grow and die, oceans absorb coastlines, some animals eat other animals, clouds form then disappear, etc. etc. everything changes on a daily basis. Imperfection = change. Consider this ... IF there is a creator and that being created US, material beings in a material universe, then the universe was created with inherent imperfection[s]. In other words everything, even us was created with sin/imperfection. It is our very nature to be imperfect and we could be nothing else. An elephant can't be a cat because 'elephant' is that animals very nature. The most disturbing part though is this... assuming god created us as imperfect beings and due to our imperfection Adam and Eve, being imperfect, were bound sooner or later to disobey god. They couldn't help it due to their imperfection. And then... god punishes them [and all humankind] for all eternity for being something god created. I can't speak for you but that seems like a dirty trick, or being 'set up' [as in law]. That doesn't sound like a benevolent deity to me. It would be cruel for a creator to make something imperfect and than punish its creation for being imperfect.
@Isaac-we2ks
@Isaac-we2ks Жыл бұрын
@@SOMAnxg I hear where you are coming from, but I want to clarify and see if we are on the same page about the creation account as seen in Genesis? I’m a newer believer so forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but if I understand correctly, God created everything good. No sin or death was present in the garden of Eden. It was a perfect paradise. No sin was found in Adam and Eve. They did have free will tho, and with this free will, they chose to disobey God (after the influence of the serpent). With this understanding, it seems to me that God set everything up fairly. It would be unfair to not have a choice about obeying God.
@SOMAnxg
@SOMAnxg Жыл бұрын
@@Isaac-we2ks You assume too much. What you assume is what you want. But what people want isn't necessarily 'true'. For example you're assuming the Garden of Eden was an actual place. You should be aware all of that is fable and not fact. One example it's not 'true' is ... let's start with the notion of an omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent supernatural god. Next... it is claimed that god created the 'heavens and the earth". If one were to assume that were true, then why wouldn't god know that using 'matter' as a means of creation automatically and naturally makes those things created imperfect? Before even a thought entered their heads. It is the very nature of matter to be imperfect. "Perfection" from philosophical and theological worldview implies that something is so perfect, to change it in anyway would make a perfect thing imperfect. Ok... what's the very nature of 'nature"? The world surrounding all of us changes second by second, minute by minute, day by day, etc. What does that imply? It implies that matter by its very nature is imperfect. Matter can't exist in any other way because it is governed by the physical laws. Thus, assuming Adam and Eve were created as physical beings, they were imperfect from the very instant of their creation. An all knowing god should've known that. And if god should've known that why would a creator expect them to act perfectly? It's against their very nature. Then punish them for being imperfect? What kind of reasonable parent would do that to a child of theirs?
@arithelion5946
@arithelion5946 Жыл бұрын
@@SOMAnxg I know it's been three months, but I'm going to answer you anyway: I think you assume too much (to borrow your turn of phrase). You assume that God created matter imperfectly, but there were no imperfections before sin. The very nature of the world changed after sin entered it. For example, before sin there was no death, no thorns, no physical pain, and no rain (instead there was a layer of dew over the earth). God knew that Adam and Eve were going to sin, but He gave them the option to eat from the tree because He knew that they had the ability to resist temptation even if they chose not to (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Unless you meditate, you are not obeying the gospel preached by Jesus and are far from him. Beware the leaven of these Pharisees. The religious dress the part and know nothing of the truth. With their lips they honor him but their hearts are FAR from him. “Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not the things that I say?” “Seek ye first the kingdom of God...” “The kingdom of God is within you...”. “Make the eye single and your whole body will fill with light”. How many of you can honestly say you have seen God “face-to-face”? As Jacob did in Genesis 32:30? How does it happen? In what place? It happens when one meditates and it takes place at the PINEAL gland of the brain! Arlen to your true nature.

People cannot accept a power greater than theirs and so we create our own laws, our own definition of Good and Evil. Only God knows the true good and evil. He knows the standard of Good and Evil. chigasaki06 I completely agree , and I think its very important that you mention God judgement and what is right and wrong in God sight, and how people try to deem themselves worthy and by doing so they make themselves their own God because they're undermining the law of God therefore making him less than God . Ive always been very cautious of people who dont keep God word and dont acknowledge God as their lords and they tend to think they're good people but in the end everybody has fallen short of the glory of God. I know that Jesus died for my sin and that i am forgiven through grace and because of that i am free from death and bondage but I also do believe that I will be held accountable for the things that I have done , the bible mention the judgement in Revelations 20:12-13.. I also think that we as Christians are to be held more accountable for our actions because we know better , we cannot live as the world lives because we are not of the world and I refuse to believe anything more of the bible and anything less because truth. I appreciate your comments about the Almighty God and God bless because it was very much appreciated

If we were to take the original meaning of the word “sin” to be failure, we can look at 1 Peter 2:22-24 as such: “He committed no ‘failures’... yet he carried our ‘failures’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to our ‘failures’ and live to do what is right.” I’m excited that I was interested in looking up videos like the ones the Bible Project produces. Devon Peebles hey Devon, I also learned that growing up, but at some point I realised (and if I'm not mistaken Tim even mentioned it in one podcast) no where in the Bible do we see that God was pleased with Jesus' suffering. When I look to that way of thinking (that again, was my own) I sent a perverse God. Is that too say that God doesn't care about soon? No. (Again, if my memory doesn't fall me) Tim mentions in this past episode that the punishment for sim doesn't come from God's sadism, but rather is a consequence of the act and of God's Holiness not leaving room for evil near Him. Does it make sense?

I love your guy's videos, keep up the good work! I do notice however you tend to show an anti gun bias. At 0:01 you have store fronts of what is presumably a pornography store, a bank and a gun store to demonstrate the sinful nature of man. Guns bought legally at gun stores are not purchased or sold with the intent of violence except in the case of self defense in which they are necessary and live saving. The vast majority of guns used in crime are obtained illegally through stealing or the black market, not a store front. There is a massive number of gun owners in America who simply own guns for sport and target shooting, Just as David and Johnathon would have practiced archery together in the bible. There is nothing inherently evil about guns, only humans. You might as well have a camera on one of the store fronts because a camera can be used to film Pornography. It's not the object that is sinful, it's how you use it. Disliking gun violence? That's fine. Exemplifying the incredible evil of mankind through an inanimate object? It misses the mark. This is just my opinion, thanks for all that you do.

Love it! I had this revelation about sin, living in us and how we actually have to die to it and feed the spirit of God. To die for our sin and to live to do what is right. So true this video totally hooks on this same concept. That's why repentance actually feels painful sometimes as part of us, our sinful nature, has to die, inside and spiritually speaking. And it's a process. Sometimes we still do what is wrong until our sinful nature has died completely. We can overcome 'the world'.

The Bible says "To he that knows the right thing to do but doesn't do it, to him it is sin" James 4:17. I combine that scripture with another one to get a better idea of sin and human nature, "A measure of faith is given to each". To me that means everyone isn't endowed with the same faith or beliefs. So it comes down to doing what YOU know is right in YOUR heart. And in the old testament some Jew sects were held to a higher standards than others. Some went beyond Levitical laws and were forbidden from cutting their hair, drinking alcohol, etc. Another example is, Some people today are lead to give away all their worldly possessions and be a devote priest. While others may be lead to help that one particular person along their way. But in every circumstance it's about us adhering to the Master's voice AT ALL TIMES to the very best of OUR abilities . One more example, after Jesus was resurrected He was having fish on the beach with His disciples and told Peter to come follow Him. And Peter saw John following them and said, 'Lord what about this man?'. Jesus replied, "If I want him to stay put until I come what is it to you?" John 20:21-24. This to me was Jesus's way of telling Peter and the world to not look at what THE NEXT MAN is doing or not doing. We must focus on OUR relationship with God and follow the way He has laid within OUR OWN heart. I hope this blessed someone today. Glory to the Lord God Almighty. He is awesome 🙌🏾

Khata, Avon, Pasha Thank you for pursuing this project. I love how you are using a double entendre for this series; teaching us about the Bible's bad words, sin, iniquity and transgression. Khata Your work on the Khata project (and the NT equivalent Hamartia) is beautiful even though the subject matter is so grave. The image of sin as a roaring lion coming after Cain filled my imagination. You're team is so gifted at breaking ideas down into such elegant categories and then illustrating the implications of those ideas with immense creativity. Thanks! Avon I am very much looking forward to seeing the way you teach us about the OT word Avon (iniquity or crookedness) and the equivalent NT word epithumia (lust or inordinate desire). So much of our pain in life seems to come from this deep place in our hearts to have some false good satisfy us when, in fact, it is only the person of God that can fill our empty spaces. So, looking forward to the way you treat this word. Pasha I know that in places like Psalm 51:1-2 and Isaiah 59:12, we see the three sin words together: "For our transgressions (Pasha-rebellions) have been multiplied before Thee, and our sins (Khata-broken laws) have testified against us, for our transgressions are with us, and our iniquities (Avon-twisted desires) -- we have known them (Is 59)." So if Khata is missing the target, Pasha (rebellion or transgression) seems to be a willful rebellion that includes going after the wrong target. I am eager to see if the NT equivalent is the Greek word Parabasis, a word we see in places like Romans 5:14 as violation. Can't wait to see this project in its fullness. You all are doing AMAZING work to bring about the Kingdom of God through providing clear and illustrative teaching of God's Holy Word.

Great question, here’s my quick thoughts about this. It’s important to understand what makes you “human” in the first place - the fact we have the ability to decide what we believe, and take actions according to our own will, is what sets us apart from all other creation. To create “humanity” without sin would not be “humanity” after all, it would be automated beings, subject to God’s will, with no sort of loving dynamic involved. Ultimately, God desires us to CHOOSE to be in relationship with him, and to willingly trust and love him. Jesus, is God revealed to us, and lived a sinless life to redeem humanity from the separation and consequence of our actions (sin). It’s important to realize God exists outside of our space & time, and he isn’t bound to time as we are. All at once, God created humanity, gave us freedom to choose (knowing we would have separation from our sin/our free will), and reconciled our sin through Christ, creating a way to being in relationship with God. “and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” -Colossians 1:20

@@thehumanbeingsMy response may be helpful I just posted, but we must acknowledge Christ himself is God. He has existed before time & space were created, before mankind, with and apart of God for all of eternity. The time Christ walked this Earth was 33 years, but that isn’t to be mistaken for his existence being diminished to being like me and you, merely human.

Hi, don’t know if you’re still wondering, but here’s what I think: as long as God chooses to still allow us to have free will, then he can make us perfect and make it do that sinning isn’t in our nature, and therefore it would actually be harder to sin than it would be to not sin. I believe this is the case for angels as well. We can know that because Satan and the fallen angels exist, angels have to also have free will and be able to choose whether they obey or disobey God. Now of course we know that unfortunately, this isn’t the case for modern humans. Why? Because Adam and Eve sinned. Many ask why we have to be like this because, surely, a good God would not blame the actions of two on the many billions of people that would eventually come. This comes from a misunderstanding of what it really means to sin. Sin is death and destruction, and most importantly, it takes you away from the infinite perfection of God, because since he is infinitely wise and perfect, even what seems like a ‘small’ sin, takes you infinitely away from him, because that one sin makes it so that you are no longer perfect, and the difference between imperfection and INFINITE perfection, is well, infinitely great. God is happiness, and perfection, and greatness, and for this particular conversation, the important thing to remember is that God is life. Hell is an extreme example of when you lack God, the thing that makes hell, hell, is the total absence of God. Thankfully, before we die and are still on earth, we don’t have to experience that kind of depth of an absence of God, because we are being given loads of chances to save ourselves from hell. Take Matthew 5:43-47. What it’s pretty much saying is that God’s mercy is present all through the earth, even to the wicked, because if that weren’t the case, we would all die physically and spiritually. The reason we die physically now is because our flesh is corrupted and not perfect in the way God intended, because Adam and Eve sinned, and that sin corrupted their flesh, and consequently all of their descendants. I mean if you mix two breeds of dog, the puppies of those dogs will be mixed and not the pure version of their parents breed. The same is true for humans and our corruption, which unlike for generations of dogs, cannot eventually be watered down and fade out of us, because all of us have it and so it just keeps getting renewed over and over again every time a new child is born. That is why us now cannot just be perfected, because we are sinners and need to accept Christ and face judgment before being perfected, otherwise it would take out the great justice and mercy that plays into salvation. Now for why God didn’t just stop this all at Adam and Eve: it’s because he loves Adam and Eve just like he loves us, and on top of that, Adam and Eve knew him personally. He wanted to save them just as much as us. For that to happen all the generations would have to go past to reach the atonement of Jesus to save Adam and Eve, and because providing that atonement would require billions of more sinners to exist, God also had every single one of us in his mind in that atonement, and so in many ways, this was all done for our ultimate good. And what you said about Jesus: Jesus was completely human, but he was also completely God, and had the wisdom and presence of God with him, which is why he was able to hold out and not sin. Because he had the presence of God with him and in him, and it was him, he was able to avoid sin because God is the opposite of sin. We are all given that same opportunity, which we can see from Enoch and Elijah, the issue is that it is a very hard thing to do, but the atonement made it possible and an available option, if you try really hard. So pretty much the problem is not whether God can do it, but whether we can use his ability and willingness to do it. Hope that helped!

If sin is to miss the mark, then how do we hit the mark? What is the mark? How does the Bible define sin? 1 John 3:4 "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." Meaning that if we break the commandments given by God found in the first 5 books of the Bible we are a sinner in His eyes. Jesus himself said that he only speaks what the Father tells him to say and that he is not teaching something new. John 7:16 and John 12:49

Kelly Bezz the word "law" or "torah" in Hebrew just means "instruction." Yawheh gave his instructions to "Isreal" at the base of Mt. Sinai along with a mix multitude and strangers who wished to be in covenant with Yah. It was for everyone and still is today. He doesn't change. It sets people apart from the the rest of the world. 50 days after the "passover" and setting them free from Egypt, the "law" or "instructions" or "torah" of Yah were given to Moses and finally codified or recorded for this New Creation called "Isreal". The loving "instructions' or "torah" from the father always existed, even in the beginning in the Garden or how else did Adam sin or Cain and Able know what to offer? This Bible project just did a horrible job defining "sin" because the Bible defines sins as trangressing the law of God.Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4 KJV "Jew" is slang for someone from the southern tribe if Isreal, Judea. Yeshua\ Jesus was a "Jew."

The word sin actually comes from the verb to miss. This is because according to the view of most religions, a person who commits sins has missed his destiny in the world. The correct word in Hebrew for sin is "Kheth" (חֵטְא). "Khata" (חָטָא) is the verb in the past tense. To make someone to sin or to miss in a shoot for intense - "Le-Hakhti" ( לְהַחְטִיא). To sin in Hebrew is "La-khto" (לַחְטֹא)

A lot of people have wandered this Earth and are still good souls? If everyone always found their destiny right away, without family/social/ or religious guidance & let’s not forget the role of $$-then things in life would be far too easy & I don’t believe it is a Sin to not yet know our destiny Destiny can change in the blink of an eye.
