Hi Andy - looks like I was one of the few who watched the Pt2 video all the way through. It was great. Maybe the time difference helped me see it before it was taken down. In two minds about Patreon as they seem to be making money from the hard work of quality KZbinrs but are not advocates of freedom of speech (whole other subject). Guess the situation is like pay-to-view TV channels - limiting access - but at least your content is worth watching.

Hey Andy, so sorry to hear about your problems with YT, especially after the hard work. You've got the right mindset to do work that'll give you a return, so fair play. I've used SketchUp on and off since the first version and have used it every few days for work purposes ever since (mainly use ACAD though). I've got the latest version so if you'd like me to 'save as' any components, let me know ;-) Gutted about your personal replies and how they mysteriously disappeared...I'd blow my top over that! Keep up the good work mate.

Hi Andy. I watch videos immediately if I have the time but i quit using watch later because it’s a pain to search through. I do occasionally use history but what I do is create an email folder for everyone I follow on KZbin. Then any KZbin email notifications I get I sort them into those folders. If I see a KZbin video on my home page or elsewhere that I don’t have time to watch I email it to myself and sort it later. And if it is a video I want to keep track of or rewatch I have a folder setup for that for each person/channel that I follow. You said if you don’t watch it to the end KZbin shows it as not being a popular video. What happens if I fast forward it to near the end of the video then let the video finish? Does it then show up as for you as a popular video?Then I can go back and finish watching it when I have time. Ron
@GosforthHandyman5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ron - not necessarily to the end, but KZbin rewards watch time and % watched - honestly don't know what happens if you fast forward. Do know if you rewind and watch the same bit again that's a positive on the stats, KZbin likes that 😀

Question about The Algorithm: you mentioned that it penalizes you if someone doesn't watch the whole video, but how exactly does that work? Is it a percentage of the video, or a hard amount of time? For example, I just watched Peter Millard's latest 10 minute workshop, and clicked off when the 'end credits' started (scrolling list of Patreon supporters). There was still a whole minute of the ~15 minute video left (about 7% of the total running time). Did that affect his 'score'?

Andy, sorry to hear this hasn’t worked out on here for you. I asked you the question a few videos back about how easy is sketchup to use and the next thing is you’ve done a detailed video for ‘noobs’😀. I have to say I put that video into my watch later as I wanted to download the software and load it up and watch your part one in bits, something I haven’t had the opportunity to do yet. In regards to replying to comments, I’ve had a similar problem as I like to reply to all of the people who comment on my videos. With only having a small subscriber base it’s a lot easy for me, but I noticed that some of my replies weren’t registering. I also noticed that, for whatever reason, my comments weren’t registering when I done them from my computer, but all did from my iPad or phone? Strange but true. Finally the patreon thing. Both yourself and Peter are totally exempt from my following comment as I enjoy all of your videos and would happily sign up to your patreon channels, however I’ve noticed recently many folk who I subscribe to on KZbin using their platform on here to promote their patreon pages taking up a fair chunk of the videos, and being brutally honest, it makes me feel a little uneasy. I 100% agree with you that video uploads take a significant period of time, I’ve only done a dozen or so and it takes me forever. I know it’s only cheap, but if folk were to subscribe to their favourite dozen KZbin folks patreon channels then it’s no longer as cheap as it seems, plus people then feel they’re losing out on content that they would like to see as they prioritise the top one or two folk and join their patreon following. Does this make sense? It isn’t a criticism and I totally understand the point you are making, what I’m not too keen on is KZbin becoming an advertising platform for patreon, which in my observations over recent months is becoming more prevalent.
@GosforthHandyman5 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally makes sense and sadly I think we're going to see it more and more as KZbin continue to tweak The Algorithm. There's a lot of bigger channels especially who are totally dependant on Patreon now. 👍👊

Interested by stopping and watch later comment, I use watch later quite a lot not history, curious though, if you post something I'm not interested in and I start it, but skip to near the end then let it run out, would this be better for the algarithym than not watching at all or stopping? I did receive a notification of part 2 of the sketchup video series. I was so happily surprised the it was released so quickly after part 1 that I straight started watching it on my super inconvenient smartphone (for this kind of things because the screen is so small) with the intention to watch it again when I arrive home. But that never happened. I did arrive home but the part 2 had vanished in thin air. The first explanation from your side came shortly after that (but I could see that only on my smartphone, not on my laptop) and this video explained everything again, and thoroughly. And I could watch it on my laptop. I totally understand all your reasons why you did it. But it stays a pity. About a year ago, I asked you, if I could make a donation directly to you, because I do not like the Patreon system so much. The direct donation link was put in your video description, I did a small donation. I still don't like the Patreon system (not because it costs 1 dollar a month, that's not the point), because it is a monthly obligation. Besides, how many side-costs are coming to that? Patreon itself needs to exist, so they need money for their organization. Who pays that? You mentioned Patreon is ad-free. Banks also don't work for free. Most of the time they have a fix cost, independent of the money you transfer. Transferring 1 dollar costs 20 cents (for example), but transferring 100 dollars also costs only 20 cents. If I'd send somebody every month 1 dollar, after 100 months I payed all together 120 dollars (incl. the costs) If I send to somebody 100 dollar (in one time), it costs only 100,20 dollar. I don't like sponsoring banks, they have already enough money.

Been a fan of Sketchup for sometime. Your explanation of backward compatibility was misleading. Backward compatibility means that content created in earlier versions is compatible with the latest version. It has never meant that the content creates in the latest version will be compatible with an earlier version. Simply there will be a feature in the latest version that is not in the earlier version. Hi Andy, I’m relatively new to KZbin and had no idea about the way it works, so thanks for that detailed explanation, I will be more mindful in future. It’s a shame the algorithm doesn’t account for tutorials; I saw Part 2 in my list and decided to watch it that evening when I sit at my desktop and I had more time and it had gone! In future I will know what to do. (Immediately save for later). I found Part 1 so helpful that I’m more than happy to pay the dollar for future instalments. I think one thing to keep in mind when you suggest a video is "worth a dollar" on Patreon, is that sometimes it's not about the actual physical cost. Sometimes it's about the time and effort involved in the process of having to create an account on Patreon, register a legitimate email address and other contact information, provide payment details, and then commit to the payment. It can take 10-15 minutes to do all this sometimes, which is a much bigger commitment than one dollar. My time is worth more than that, so you're actually asking for more than a dollar from me. Please consider these other barriers to paying for content! If I'm going to pay for content on Patreon, I need to be convinced that there's a lot more content than a single video that I'm going to want to peruse later, even if it's just a dollar that's being asked for.
@GosforthHandyman5 жыл бұрын
There's many vids on my Patreon - not just SketchUp. If folk don't view the content (1-2 days of my time to create each vid) as being worth $1 and a one-off time sink of no more than 2 minutes to set up an account then it's probably not for them, so absolutely fine. You'd have to do the same thing if you were subscribing to a SketchUp training course costing much, much more. 👍

I use Sketchup Pro 2017 that I... erm... acquired legally, because it's one of the latest proper versions of Sketchup, primarily because of compatibility, I had a lot of issues running my older copy of Sketchup on my laptop. I gave the online version a go but I just couldn't get my head around the UI. I don't think I've ever used anything from the 3D warehouse, I've modelled literally everything myself. I modelled up all the standard kitchen cabinets, appliances, quite a lot of IKEA furniture so I can just import the file. Mostly because I like being able to go into the model credits and only see my name!

Im confused, why does it matter? Aren't you trying to help your viewer's? Or is it just about the money? I don't see any easy to understand instruction videos on sketchup

It matters if he is taking 1 or 2 days making and editing videos for a tenner ! $1 on patreon if its something you are interested in. Andy makes videos that help people for sure..... And it's definitely not all about the money ..... But the guy does have a living to make 😃

This is so wrong... A constant battle with algorithms, I saw John Heisz is also having issues with it... It's crazy that the algorithms are awarding the ”virals” that are not adding any value, there is a definitely need for another platform, maybe membership based (so no annoying ads), where you wont ”compete” with stupid click baits, where tactics like ”put a face expression in the thumbnail and a red arrow, or better a naked woman” wont be allowed. I'm tired of hitting "I'm not interested in this video" and not being counted when I shout this is useless clickbait, stop promoting it". Of course they wont give us the tools to clean the video feed, they want to shove us all the rubbish to make their total viewing numbers bigger. KZbin definitely needs a competitor!

Andy, how much is your patronage for the locals. Lifes a bitch. Being a North Eastern UK, I understand your twang. I like the way you come across, I am new to KZbin, that is why a lot of my comments seem a bit out of sinc, to you.

A bit disappointing that good video content isn't profitable or worth the effort for you. I suppose it makes sense to make an introductory video showing the quality of the content and then ask people to get further material through Patreon (isn't it $1 per month?) Like you said in the video, I had the 2nd video on my 'to watch' list...so 'the algorithm' doesn't really work for me...it's OK for 'click bait' videos or fads but some content is slow burn and takes time to generate a following. There's a guy on KZbin who does amazing things with cars (B is for Build) who said that his advice to newbies for getting lots of views is to buy a supercar...he admitted that it's stupid advice but it worked for him.

Andy, its not worth your while teaching sketchup. Champion it, vlog about it and add links to it, but there's plenty of other vid out there incl sketchup's own 7 part tutorial. Don't [thanks to those stupid algorithms] jeopardise your channel over this. - Those sketchup's own tutorials are quite straightforward and cover everything to get started. I've been a trainer and I know what a pain preparing training plans is. Save yourself the headache...

Cheers Keith! Yeah, it's a very old product and the market is flooded with vids. Happy to make these for folk who can really make use of it over on Patreon. 👍😃

I missed both Sketchup vids, though I would have watched them. Didn't get any notifications at all. I do disagree about using it as a starter program though, it's clunky and has a non-standard way of doing things that can confuse, as well producing really bad 3D models if you use it for something like 3D printing. Go straight to Fusion 360, it's a much better program, and starting from scratch, I found it actually easier to learn. But that may be just my brain. ;-)
