I have seen people go out into the streets and speak to homeless people on a regular basis and give them food and offer to take them to rehabilitation centres when they are on drugs. Is that also the job of a social worker???

It is better known as social service. Social Work is more than that which actually is practice following some professional steps, techniques.... It is more of a technical concept.
