I want to be a medical social worker!!! I'm only in my freshman year but I'm majoring in social work with a double minor in heathcare ethics and public health. I want to go on to get my joint MSW/MPH and become an emergency room advocate!! Ultimately, my goal for my later career is to serve on some kind of state/provincial medical board to be able to help enact widespread change within the healthcare profession. I'll probably retire to being a medical ethicist once I become too old to work with patients one-on-one. I'm dreaming big!!!

I am going in with a few years of medical billing experience. A lot of discharge planning can get interrupted by waiting on insurance hurdles like pre-authorization or denials because the diagnosis code(s) not being the one the insurance company wants. It's easier maneuvering through all that if you're onsite but I've also tried arranging all that from a call center and that can be very difficult. It can be emotionally and energetically draining making arrangements through a call center and contacting the EXACT people that you need in contrast than when you are onsite and walk up to the person you need. Whenever you finish (or come to some sort of resolution) there is already someone else on the line wanting the same above and beyond treatment. Most facilities can recognize call center phone numbers and its nearly impossible to get past "Mary" the front desk receptionist to get you to the person that can make the change that you need. I start my baccalaureate this Spring, but I am leaning more toward the psychological therapy and behavioral health sector.

This video was super helpful! I'm a sophomore in college and I'm planning to switch my major to social work, but when I was telling people about it, I realized I didn't know all of the details. This video helped clear it up a bit and gave me a better idea of the different jobs a social worker can have.

So I just started my SW internship in a school setting, and I feel like my task supervisor is giving me the same task every day to stand in the cafe or go outside to observe kids. When there are any important invites where I could shine and show what I could do, she always says, "When we have a next workshop, I will include you in it,when she could have told me about it. I saw her doing a 1-on-1 with a student and asked if I could join, and she said, Yeah, sure, doll. The whole time, she was just looking at me with a straight face, and she will leave the placement when the day is over and not even say goodbye to me and the other intern. Like, what should I do? Because I love to become a social worker, but I'm not feeling like I'm learning anything and don't have the proper guidance to enhance my skills.

At my internship, im at a school. I get called into the office every month for the smallest things. I'm being watched all day long. Im only there 2 days out the week. It feels like 5. Im always anxious. I hate it. Im on the verge of quitting. The other intern from another school fakes the funk. She hates it too, but they (yt) love her. I just can't be fake.

I understand how stressful it is to feel constantly scrutinized. It's tough to be authentic when others seem to get by by playing the game. Your feelings are valid, and prioritizing your well-being is important. Have you considered discussing this with someone at your school? Perhaps think about transferring to another organization?

Do you have any recommendations of what type of masters program I should look into so that I can become an ER social worker? For example, which programs would be more beneficial for this type of work (hope this makes sense). Thanks again for all your insight!
