What Is Socially Responsible Investing

I'm new to investing. People is talking much about Barrick Gold stocks before and after Warren Buffet bought a portion of the company. How should I put into consideration my choice to buy or not Barrick Gold stocks under the light of socially responsible investing? That company has a track of pollution accidents. My investment would be of very few stocks, but I want to be mindful anyway.
