I remember Muskogee, Oklahoma in 8th grade in the mid 90s. The coolest old man in town had a moon-raker 4. I spent all my lawn mowing money on setting up a base station in my parents’ garage. RCI 2950 tuned (hacked) to operate from 26-32MHz. 200 watt amplifier. 40ft tall pole in the back yard with an Amtron-99 on top. The world was at my fingertips. And then the internet and cellphones happened...

Your video came at the exact right moment in time for myself because I got a older realistic Communications radio that had single sideband and I bought it because it had single sideband but it had the bfo knob which I do understand how it works after I go through my band spread after tuning today I got a new radio with LSB and USB and now I understand I won't have to mess with the BF 0 knob now I need to get a good antenna and figure out the rest of it thank you that made perfect sense to me I want to see your other videos

I realize I'm watching your video 6-1/2 yrs after you put it out, but it's the only video I'm aware of that explains SSB. When I think about it, in theory at least, if you had a really sensitive SW tuner, you should be able to tune into a channel that carries SSB and then tune down (counterclockwise) to get LSB and up (clockwise) to get USB. Anyway, I never figured it out, so even on my RadioShack and Tecsun SW's I couldn't get SSB even though the button was there. Can you do scans in SSB?? Also, is the reception on a monster iCOM radio worth the extra for reception (listening) quality?? What about the Sangean or Tecsun 2000 which I think goes for about $300?? Thanks for your video.

Thanks for the info.. Thinking of going on a road trip. Thinking of getting a CB with side band capabilities.
@JohnnyRebKy8 жыл бұрын
Sideband will be of no use on a road trip. All road communications are on regular ole channel 19 on CB. If your interested in sitting in your car and making long distance contacts when conditions allow then yes. But just for general road use it will be worthless. They cost more money too. A tried and true cobra 29 cb is all you need for a good road tripping radio.

I've always known about radio and could build radios and I know schematics and tubes and transistors but I never understood the terminology about ham what it consists of until the other day basically I met someone that tried to explain more of it the way I understand it with single sideband I can communicate with some ham operator heading right or wrong? And I also believe that it is a form of frequency modulation and I can be wrong but it definitely is not a.m. thank you so much I'm wanting to learn I'm going to take my technicians license pretty soon

Only one sideband can be used at a time. Either of the three on this radio, or whatever options any radio has.

not always some Shortwave radios have SSB some dont, as for Narrow and Wide FM, NFM is for regular transmissions from Amateur radio operators or law enforcement, Wide FM is used for the FM radio band to listen to radio stations

I have the Eton 750 Satellit. A shortwave signal doesn't play well in SSB. It plays best in it's own shortwave mode. Doesn't that mean that it's already built into the radio? I can turn on LSB or USB tuned in to a station but it doesn't improve the quality.
@OfficialSWLchannel2 жыл бұрын
LSB USB is a transmission mode. It is to be used in the utility and amateur radio bands not on the International broadcast bands

I have played a lot with SSB signals but I haven’t found a carrier with separate USB AND LSB signals with different content. Do these stations exist or did I misunderstand your comment?

there is no carrier. There are often some frequencies populated with USB and LSB signals , happens often in the pirate bands in 6 MHz

@stickbender27426 жыл бұрын
A BFO is used to inject a micro carrier. A better way to describe this, the Carrier (AM) is the center of the signal. Above center, is the Upper Side band. Below, is the Lower. These are purely modulation that modulate the carrier. The closer to carrier (center) the lower the frequency of amplitude (Bass) and the farther is higher (Treble).

I discovered that if you put two regular shortwave radios side by side. You can listen to single side band. Just tune one radio to a sideband signal and use the other one by jamming the other radio. If you slowly tune to jam the other radio you can hear the others sideband conversation
