He said "I like it when people hold the door for me, because...bec...trying to express himself. And finally " ...because it means they know I'm here". It's the essence of what you said was the most important thing to inderstand. This mother and I looked at eachother in wonder...just that eye contact said so much, no word was spoken. Most adults dont ever get that innate kind of appreciation.

I see a real lack of fully and willingingly acknowledging eachother has dramatically changed veryrapidly. It could be why there is so much talk about social behaviors like narcissism, entitlement, and bullying...etc The fact that we dont see the others "face" and maintain our own adequately, then both are unsuccesfull in our transaction. Empathy is essential and not all seem to naturally have it. (Social media is part of that for myself...another discussion!)

Goffman would say that the stigma is not in the person. He would say that stigma is a relationship between an attribute an audience. An attribute, like skin color, can stigmatize you before one audience and not stigmatize you before another audience. So the stigma is not in the person or in the attribute but in the relationship between the attribute and the audience.

Autism is characterized, primarily by difficulties and social communication. Some people without these difficulties. See these differences as less than normal, and that’s where the stigma comes from. What is the evolutionary purpose of stigmatization?
@HowCommunicationWorks Жыл бұрын
It’s probably related to the basic biological response of disgust. The evolutionary purpose of disgust was to stop us from eating spoiled food or getting near bacteria that would infect us. Stigma is like disgust in the social world. Goffman even says stigma is contagious. Stigma is way of casting people out of a group if they possess some attribute that the group values very negatively. You could imagine how this might’ve served a useful purpose in evolutionary terms to exclude individuals who are harmful to the group.

can anybody< help me understand the following question: what does it mean to say that our performances can be a source of stigma.
@HowCommunicationWorks5 жыл бұрын
Goffman used the word performance to mean almost anything you do in the social world. So let’s say that a person is in the habit of getting drunk and passing out at business dinners. They will soon be stigmatized as a drunk. Any objectionable or abnormal social behavior can cause a person’s identity to be discredited. So that’s how performances cause stigma.
@tenns0015 жыл бұрын
@@HowCommunicationWorks thank you so much for your reply!!! but I am still struggling with the concept, in my lecture we talked about performances being used to portray to others the identity we want them to think of us and that stigma is an attribute that discredits the performer... but I still can't seem to understand the connection between performance in terms of appearance and manner with stigma
@HowCommunicationWorks5 жыл бұрын
Goffman says we are all potentially discreditable. That is, there is something about us that, if discovered, would discredit and stigmatize us. So there are many performances that could reveal something about us that would discredit us. And that would lead to us being seen as less than normal in the eyes of other normals.

Hello Bruce, I really benefit from your videos, may I ask how you would categorize dyslexia? I see it as a type 2 stigma, but it is of course not something people have any choice about? :)
@HowCommunicationWorks4 жыл бұрын
Casper, I think dyslexia is a disability stigma, like being blind or deaf or in a wheelchair. But it can be invisible, so in that way it differs from other, more visible, disability-related kinds of stigma. The reason people may go to great lengths to hide it is that they sense intuitively that they will pay a social price (in terms of stigma and discrimination) if their dyslexia is revealed. Also, dyslexia illustrates how stigma "spreads" from one kind of disability to another, e.g., people with dyslexia may also be viewed as unintelligent, or disables in other ways as well, just as blind people are often treated as if they also have hearing loss.
@Casper-ob1fm4 жыл бұрын

Hi professor! I'm an Education Studies undergrad from China. I feel so lucky to have found your videos!They are immensely helpful for my studies as well as understanding of human interactions. I found the locations of stigma you talked about similar to the different theories regarding treating children with special educational needs (SENs). "Stigma is inside the individual" is like the "medical model", "stigma is inside the observer" is like "the social model", and "stigma is in the relationship between the attribute and the audience" is similar to what Swain et al. (2013, p. 1) say "disabling barriers [are] faced by people with impairments in their interactions with a physical and social world designed for non-disabled living". And the "world" in this quote echoes the "context" in your presentation. So do you think I can create similar models for all problems that are mostly perceived to be individual yet argued to be socially constructed? Thank you!

@@haroldmaio407 You still don't understand. Stigma is a reality. It's dependent on context, and it exists in a relationship between an attribute and an audience, as Goffman says. Nevertheless, stigma is a social fact. Both felt (self-perceived) and enacted (overt discrimination) exist in every social group every studied. It's a way of marking in-group vs. out-group membership. That you may disagree with exclusion or discrimination in some individual case just proves that Goffman is right: stigma exists in the relationship between an attribute and an audience. You are saying some attributes are not stigmatizing. Fine. Just because you don't think so doesn't mean stigma does not exist in that circumstance.
