I was thinking of majoring in sociology with a concentration in criminology with a double minor in psychology and child and youth studies with co-op(3 work terms(paid). I was thinking masters in psychology or criminology. I would love to pursue a career in criminal Justice and mental health/addiction.

I am a 3rd year Sociology student at Sheffield Hallam University. Currently, I am looking into a postgraduate degree (MRES Social Science). The belief that a Sociology degree is inherently "useless" really only stems from misconceptions and silly ideas of some work being more valuable than others (STEM vs. arts, for example!). Lots of employers view a degree in Sociology positively. It develops our ability to think critically and enhances our own social perceptiveness. In our current climate, there's a call for institutions such as the police to teach this subject - that's how useful it is. I love Sociology and if it's your cup of tea, it's totally worth studying. It's as valuable as any degree that doesn't have a specific career route (History and English, for example). How a degree is used is totally up to the individual. For almost any degree, job prospects depend entirely on patience, will, and opportunity. Nothing to do with uselessness/no skills. Usually, Soc students go on to further study anyway, which really helps you specialise in your skills/interests. Best of luck with the degree with the rest of your degree, Joelle!

yep exactly, and I would also say that it's a way that those in power suppress critical thought (and critique of power). wishing you all the best as well!

Hi! I'm so glad you're considering studying sociology! I get this question all the time and I will make a video addressing this and other qus, but in brief: studying sociology is much like studying any other humanity (geography, history etc), so my advice is, as long as you enjoy it, your career will work itself out. I know friends who are working in government, marketing, consulting... you have so many options. Hope that helps!

Hi! I'm considering studying Sociology and I was wondering how large an element there is of evaluating and processing statistics/quantitative data? I ask because I LOVE learning about and discussing different concepts and theories, but I really don't enjoy practical application of data-related skills.
@JoellePhuaLife2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your course I would say! My course I barely did any quant, we only did one module in 2nd year as it is a method of research (which is super important in Sociology!) I'd say look at different courses and see how much is mandatory :)

heyy :) I'm a first year currently studying English, but im looking to transfer to sociology!! I was wondering, is it still possible to go into teaching with a sociology, because not many unis offer a PGCE in the social sciences?
@JoellePhuaLife Жыл бұрын
100% I think it's possible. I'm not sure on the details but you can research on which schools need social science studies the most. I've also had teachers who taught more than one subject (Economics and Sociology), so having another area of expertise might be advantageous

@JoellePhuaLife4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Some places do sociology with psychology, maybe there are some near you. In terms of doing a psych masters with sociology undergrad, it's possible but if you definitely want to go down that route, research universities and their entry requirements for psych masters - you can even email them and they might be able to advise you :))
@JoellePhuaLife4 жыл бұрын
For e.g. for Bath Psychology MRes the entry requirements are "To apply for this course you should have an undergraduate degree in psychology or related discipline." www.bath.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate-2020/taught-postgraduate-courses/mres-psychology-full-time/#entry-requirements

@JoellePhuaLife4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bryan! For our essays, we get a word limit with +/- 10% leniency, so for e.g. if an essay has 2000 word limit, your minimum would be 1800 and your maximum would be 2200. But this depends on you uni and your course - hope it helps!:)

I've gotten an offer from Bath in sociology and social policy that I likely will firm so this video was really interesting! What would you say a typical day is like (not really in terms of what you study but more in terms of how your day is structured if that makes sense)?
@JoellePhuaLife5 жыл бұрын
Hi Emira! Firstly, huge congrats on your offer!! Secondly, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, I hope it was helpful :) Lastly (and to answer your question) - in first year, I had 12 contact hours a week which is 2-3 hours per day, depending on how timetabling decide to spread out your units. If you're living on campus, it's really nice because you can always pop back to your flat between lectures. In Sociology, the units are taught in a mixture of lectures and seminars which is nice. Overall, I found it quite relaxed really (in terms of contact hours, not in terms of coursework haha). Hope that helps! xx

It possibly could be useful if the degree heavily focuses on research, along with quantitative stuff like higher level math, such as statistics etc. If the sociology degree only focuses on political science crap, then it’s useless. Like a lot things, always do some research and plan your life out.
