Sufism is often presented as a rather peaceful form of Islam. While that is to some extent true, there is more to Sufism than the general population knows.

Here in India, our medieval history is full of Sufis coming from abroad and settling in our lands, starting their prayer houses from where young men would pour out to attack non Muslims. In fact some of the earliest interactions of Indians (Kashmiris in particular, who until the 15th century were majority Hindu-Buddhist) with Muslims was through the "peaceful" Sufis who would violently attack Hindus and force them to convert. It was only in the later centuries that some of these Sufi orders realized that such violent tactics are counter-productive in India, where people would fight back or revert to Hinduism. So they began to couch their ideology in "acceptable" format: patronizing music & arts (Haram in Islam), allowing people to venerate teachers (from the Hindu Guru/Teacher worship tradition, which is strictly forbidden in Islam) and adopting Hindu theological framework (Calling God Jogi/Yogi, a name for Krishna etc.). This, along with periodic coercion worked in Kashmir and Sindh, but failed in rest of India. So, to put it simply, in the Indian context, Sufism is Taqiya (cheating, lying) in order to promote Islam.

*INDONESIA.* "Indonesian Islam" is considered more peaceful than some other branches being a *syncretic Islam* (because of Indonesia's Hindu and Buddhist heritage) with its roots in Sufism historically, but today Indonesians are Sunnis. Nevertheless, in 2018 there were 3 terrorist attacks on 3 churches in SURABAYA and children as young as *nine* (9) year olds participated, and some Indonesians fought for the ISIS. Well? Islam remains Islam...

I've known many Indonesians, and for the most part they were excellent people. I've tasted Indonesian hospitality, fun, peacefulness. Most Indonesians I knew were Hindu-Balinese, Christian or atheist, but there were Muslims too, and they were no different from others. Of course, these were the Muslims who out of their free will sat down with Balinese, Christians, etc. Indonesia had (maybe still has) a system where one's religion is written in main documents (driver's licence, i.d., etc.) and thus known to everyone, and at the same time there are only 5 allowed religions: Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist. But at that time the authorities allowed another religion, called Javanese Mysticism. So this is what was present underneath the officially Islamic surface ever since most of the country was conquered and converted to Islam. And it must be present there now, whatever the authorities decide. And this is what makes it so much more peaceful. Only the Aceh province is different. There, the laws of Islam are applied strictly, with a zeal the government itself could not defeat. Unfortunately, now lots of Wahabbi clerics are coming to Indonesia, just as they are coming everywhere else. With the same results. Including growth of terrorism.

For Muslims peace means dar al Islam - house of peace - Nation where Islam is majority & non Muslims are subdued or converted, jizya tax forced on disbelievers. Until Mulsims achieve dar al Islam they are at a permanent state of war with the ruling nation. That is called dar al harb. So do not be deceived by Muslim interpretation of peace. Why do Muslims talk so much about peace ? That's because it's their religious duty to convert the nation to sharia law either by out-breeding or violence.

Something I wish I had added: Many Muslim nations in the world went through major Sufi influence which contributed to them being more peaceful than Saudi Arabia, for example. That happened not only because Sufis took much control, but also because people respected the rather peaceful and devout attitude of Sufis. The emergence of Sufism is therefore not bad, but Sufism is still Islam and contains all the bad things that Islam teaches. Another note: Sufism is not contrary to Sunni Islam. I, for example, was a Sunni Muslim but also a Sufi.

Jesus Christ died for your sins on a cross and rose again after three days. You have committed evil deeds, as we all have done. God is a just judge, and must punish you for these sins, because he is perfect by his nature. But God loves you, does not want to punish you. This is why God took the form of a man, Jesus Christ, and died as a sacrifice for your sins on a cross. He was punished for your sins, so that you could be made righteous in God's sight. After three days, Jesus rose again, because it is impossible for him to have been held down by death. This is great news! Repent, (that is, change your mind,) and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and be saved from the judgement of God. God will reward you for your faith with eternal life, and forgiveness for your deeds. I sin, and you sin, and we both will continue to sin, but Jesus Christ died for these sins, and God is willing to forgive them. Please, repent, and believe the Gospel.

Same here, I do like their poetry and philosophies. I believe that it was due to teachers steeped in Sufi philosophies that the Turkic peoples reconciled with the idea of eventually converting to Islam as they had or still have a penchant towards the mysticism of Tengrism and Shamanism. A Mongolian doctor living in Anatolia once said that the Turks are Muslim by mistake. Well, be that as it may, the trajectory of their migrations towards the West took them through Islamic countries that at the time were far ahead in science, literature, mathematics, you name it, when Christian Europe was still mired in the Dark Ages. Some time later the roles were reversed. Thanks to the influence of the cultural achievements of Muslim Spain Europe woke up and experienced the "Renaissance" whereas Islam became ever more ossified. Still, I love the Turks and the achievements of the Ottoman Empire, their administrative and military prowess, their tolerance, the meritocracy they practised and their cultural achievements. I also love Turkish cuisine. 😘

Awesome! Wow! In the nineties I hung out with Sufi Dervishes and did the dance chanting practices. I traveled to Turkey with the Mevlevi Order with the goal of turning in Rumi's tomb. Since I was not a dervish I could not be in the mevlevi sema ceremony in the tomb, so I filmed it. We did not know we had permission to perform the ceremony until we were walking across the street to do it. This is after being completely covered in 100 degree heat for 3 days in Ankara. Women were not allowed to turn in Turkey but we were crazy Americans and half men, half women of 28. I have been questioning the Sufis since I have been watching ex-muslims teach what is so off about islam. Thank you for your enlightening, humorous commentary.

Most of the famous, beloved Sufi poets were Persians, as we’ve had a history of poetry for thousands of years. Persian as a language is very poetic, and poetry is still highly revered in Iran. It ain’t the Islam, it’s the Persian that made the Sufi poetry so beautiful 😊

Excellent video and I completely agree that it was our own consciousness in our dhikr circles and hadra, because I used to be a murid of the Shadhili tariqa (having come from a Christian background then converted to Islam), but have since left Islam itself. And I like how you tie this into Turkish history, since my own trips to Turkey made me appreciate the secular reforms of Ataturk, but indeed history shows the Sufi tariqas were closely bounded up with the Ottoman Caliphate and other political elites (my own tariqa's history was closely bound up with the same Moroccan monarchy that in the past freely used such jihadist rhetoric). So I concur with your points and would add that the good elements we find in Sufism throughout the world, simply were adopted from the local peoples which is why common people took to Sufism so well. The Wahhabis have a point when they say Sufism is a "bid'ah", which is an astounding admission because when I was a Sufi Muslim I expended much effort trying to "prove" how we were the "true" Muslims and not the Wahhabis. But its all clearer to me now that I have left Islam. Furthermore, as anyone who has studied psychology can attest, there is nothing inherently "evil" about the Ego or the Self, that indeed much enlightenment actually comes from confronting or even embracing those, contrary to the well-meaning Sufis who talk about how we should constantly "suppress" the Ego/Self so as to reach Fana'.

Sufis were not necessarily peaceful -when the Ottoman Turkish sultan Murad the First invented the Janissary Elite military force during the thirteenth century, the great Sufi poet Rumi blessed the force and was actually responsible for naming it -The New Troops.Now the Janissaries were a very cruel institution -Christian boys were regularly forcibly recruited Christian parents and forcibly circumcised and converted to Islam -then they were forced to fight their own people as part of this crack troop Ottoman force.Rumi is revered all over the world as a great poet and sufi mystic.There are numerous examples of sufis being jihadists.

I stand corrected-it was the dervish Hajji Beytash who blessed and named the Janissary corp -presumably he was a sufi of the Mehlevi order founded by Rumi -in Konya under the Seljuk dynasty.

Great video, as usual. Thank you for sharing. Please could you explain what makes a Hadith “weak” and therefore unreliable? Thank you AP!
@Cruz8R
@Cruz8R 5 жыл бұрын
I know some basic raw rules, First, initially, all the hadiths in the six hadiths collections (Kutub al-Sittah) are considered Sahih (authentic). The scholars that composed those hadiths already did the filtering and destroyed all the unreliable hadiths. Second, it depends heavily on the chain of narrators. If there are missing narrators or unreliable narrators a Hadith is considered weak. Thirth (not an official rule but something Muslims are doing nowadays) If a Hadith is embarrassing, not consistent with the science or contains historian errors than scholars will do anything within their power to make a Hadith weak.

*YOU, as a Turk, and ex-Muslim, should know better than me THAT* Ottoman Empire never was that. Ottomans created SULTANATE which since 1517 was CALIPHATE. When we know that FACT thats a totally DIFFERENT and BETTER understanding what was main guidance behind the force and goal of the Ottomans and its *social and state regulation.* Ottoman Empire was actually *Ottoman Caliphate* i.g. the Islamic state. In historiography its known as *Ghazi thesis.* Maybe do a video on the Ottomans....

The ottomans didn't only become Khalif for the sake of islam. They also became a caliphate for power and influence. Many muslims refused to rebel against their Khalifs (the spiritual successor to Muhammed sav himself). It worked untill the ottomans became much more turkish and nationalistic, causing arabs and Europeans to rebel against their turkish masters.

All these practices are what is called ritual, and the ritual repeated again and again drive people to feel and fell in a special mind state, is very well known, and it is exactly the same that to pray all togheter and repetdly make the same movements, people ends felling things that seem very special and they think that this is spirituality, but it is only an outcome of these practices, because you continue being the same guy, with only some different felling for a while, nothing has changed inside you, for this reason you can continue killing people or doing other bad things, you have not evolved

There's an instance in Indian history as well. Many people(Indians) might be aware of the fact that Mughal emperor Akbar named his son and heir after Salimuddin Chishti, a Sufi saint. Prince Salim would later grow up to be Jahangir and continue the Mughal line. But not many know that while Akbar had sent his army to fight Maharana Pratap in Haldighati, that Chishti saint along with his followers accompanied the Mughal army and prayed for their victory and the slaughter of the Rajputs. They might've even fought on the side of the Mughals
