I was slightly surprised to hear your characterization of symbolic dynamics as one making time discrete because I had always thought of it as a quotient over some sort of space, but then I realised that that makes the time evolution discrete! Nevertheless, it's interesting to wonder about what sorts of statistics you can get from continuous models like Newtonian dynamics with three bodies by varying the partition of the space.

There are certainly several valid characterizations, but for me symbolic dynamics always comes with some form of ‘iteration’ which makes things discrete. Anyway, I hope the point of view was useful ☺
