Question by one of our Malay friend : Why most of them wear yellow attire during thaipusam? Answer: Yellow is auspicious and also people used to soak white clothes in turmeric before wearing it to festivals like this. It acts as antibacterial agent. And if you notice your Hindu neighbors, they will hang up a string of mango leaves with turmeric and kumkum powder mixed with water and shaped like a dot. Serves similar function. Even when we want to do pongal celebration Infront our house , we will wash the area with water mixed with turmeric.

Well another reason why the are piercings is because of bravery. The deed is called alagu kutruthal. Alagu rhymes with the word azhagu which means beauty. Tamils are warriors and they shouldnt be afraid of pain. So the beauty of a warrior is to bear the pain happily and without fear. So the piercing of alagu happens in order to prepare a warrior so that he's not afraid of pain.

@@hhheidi1121 Take a look at all the Thaipussam media available. Almost always every picture and video comes from Malaysia or Singapore, Never India itself. I don't live in either India or Malaysia, but I have had hundreds of acquaintances from India. Punjabi (Hindu ones) Gujuratis, Bengali, and Telugus from India most of them have never even heard of Thaipussam. I've been to India as well, the concept doesn't really exist and is pretty much only known to a limited portion of Tamil Nadu. "Muruga" isn't really worshipped widely outside of ethnic Tamils so that also contributes.

So , one can conclude ,it is not a organized believe system like the abrahamic religions of the west like islam , christianity and judaism . Adi Shankara was a great man, I do follow Advaita Vedanta. We also worship Murugan as Kartikeya at home. I am interested in knowing what's going on? I have many Tamilians as friends, but never felt any different. Though i do feel this Dravidian and "cowbelt" politics is kinda useless. Our genes are the same, our religion is the same. I really don't understand the fight. If anything I have seen north Indians always marvel at south Indians who seem to have retained the Hinduism and culture while we have lost its essence, we just superficially follow it. In fact, we kinda feel ashamed. Great video...there's not only 1 story's but many , of why we carry kavadys , because of the large religious texts found in Santana dharma. One in particular talks about a great sage named Agasta who was a murugan devotee, instructed he's student idumban to carry two hills, shiva giri and shakti giri, and return it two he's town. Iduman was very strong so he took he's stick and tied the hills on either side on slung it on he's shoulder. After a while he felt very tired and wanted to take a rest, when he tried to continue with he's quest he couldn't not pick up this hills even with all he's strength. When he looked carefully he saw a a young boy sitting on the hill.not knowing it was lord murugan himself, He shouted at the boy, and from an argument it ended up to be a fiece battle wich lasted days. Eventually lord murgan killed the student. When the sage heard of this he prayed with great austerity to lord murugan. And the lord appeared. The sage explained to him and the lord brought idumban back to life. Lord iduman apologized as he saw it was the lord himself. And lord murugan was very impressed that he lasted so long In the fight and asked idumban to be he's main protector idumban agreed so that's why you see lord idumban outside or at the entrance of murgan temples. Lord Idumban only asked of 1 thing from lord murga. And that is whoever carrys they burden on their shoulders in the from of a kavady and lays them at ur feet, must be blessed of those burdens. And lord muruga agreed. Vetri vel murga. Arohara
