I have this set, a few of your cons can easily be remedied, in regards to the odor(could be from the brass), mine doesn’t smell, of course like any utensil I buy, I wash before using. The non polished metallic feel in the mouth, after a few usages and washes ( use the scrubbier side of the sponge)it smoothed out. I also just removed the brass fitting completely, I only use the carabiner. The knife, I agree it does nothing better then to spread butter, but I also always have my fixed blade on my hip. You can remove the knife and u’ll have an even lighter kit. The length of the spoon can easily be extended, as mentioned by another viewer, just screw on the brass fitting with the knife and fork on other end. The only thing I do agree with is the staining, which could be from the small % of the non titanium, I also own a titanium spork from Vargo, and it also got stained

His observation of the odd feel & smell makes you wonder how much of the metal ends up rubbing off into your food or that you digest, which may not be completely safe.

I have the finesse city titanium spork and it works great for me. Never had any weird smell though. It is a little on the short side, but I have had my share of MREs back in the day so I don’t need it to be long. I’ve found that Dairy Queen spoons work very well, or the foldable MSR spork. The only downside is that they are plastic. Great video Luke! Strength and honor my friend.

Thanks for your honest reviews. They can definitely save people some headache if they watch. I’ve been using the finesse city extra long titanium spoon for two years and I have zero complaints. Bowl is polished, no cheap smell and it’s a full 10” long. Being that it’s two years old, I have no idea if the newer models are made of the stinky material but I’m certainly happy with mine.

I have owned this set for 5 years. My only complaint is that the knife is not sharp enough and this was not a problem until I went on keto diet and took only steak on backpacking trips. I do not use carabiner, but i do use the two brass screw together devices. Never noticed any odd smells or tastes. I recently purchased another set because my first one went missing in my camping equipment storage cabinet. New set does not have odd smells or tastes and still has a dull knife.

Titanium is a great way to save weight! Glad we can always count on a honest review from you! Much love
@cobbler884 жыл бұрын
It is, but weight really only counts if you're backpacking. And you take so little in that pack that is titanium (usually just the cook pot and maybe the utensil) that a person can end up spending about $50 more just to save about 4-5 oz. if they're not careful. That being said, if you're not in a hurry, you can get great titanium pots for $20 from AliExpress. I abandoned the long-handled spoons for the resin, two-piece Humangear GoBites Duo. It's less than an ounce heavier, but is longer when assembled, gives you a full fork on one end, is plenty strong when assembled and comes in at $7. Plus it's a two-piecer where the pieces nest, so it's easier to store.

I gave up on Ti utensils once I found the Human Gear Go Duo set. Weigh as much as a long handled Ti spoon, pack smaller than any of the non-foldable utensils, and best of all you get an actual fork and spoon that can be used separately, or connected together to get deep in those trail meal pouches.

Some years ago I purchased a Sea to Summit cuttlery set that weighs just 40g (knife,fork,spoon&carabiner). When I go on hikes I leave the carabiner and 'knife' (useless) behind. The fork+spoon weight in at 25g or .9oz. That is still heavier than a 'light my fire spork' (19g or .7oz) but gives me more flexibility. I highly doubt that the set Luke reviewed is made from titanium.

I am retired two years ago after 33 years of surgical support in a really big hospital in minnesota. I worked with titanium implants everyday from ear tubes in children to knees,hips and Ti clips in brain aneurysms which can at times be hundreds at one time and posible a thousand. For those patients they are returned to bed with the piece of skull put back on and continued the next day. But just saying i have never noticed any odor on Ti as well as stainless steel. And there are an amazing variety of smells working in a hospital all of which are quite bad. But I have become smell blind to most all of them. I assume Ti is best for backpack when every bit of weight counts. I just like basic what is in the kitchen drawer at home but i also have a decent coleman plastic three piece. But yes that screw thing to hold them together as well as the carabiner is rediculous. They could lower there manufacture cost buy getting rid of both and using a cheap carabiner or even a wire loop to hold the three piece together. Awesome background. On a side note there are some high tech metals that are manufactured with a oil impregnation. There was a device used for knee implants that always came out oily even after decontam and sterilisation. I told everyone including company reps that it was molybendum and they had no clue what i was talking about.

Usually whenever somebody has a metal smell on a piece of metal it's not the actual metal that is giving off the sent, it is the oils on your hand reacting with the metal. Metals actually do not give off a scent more likely it is some sort of oil that is on the metal reacting with it to produce the smell. I can't speak for any coating that maybe on the utensils if the coating is what's giving off the smell I suggest do not use.

Damn. If we've moved on to eating kits, I'm all in on the Humangear GoBites Duo. Longer than the long spoons when put together, nests more compact for storage, and is so strong when assembles that you don't worry about it being a two-piece unit with a full fork on one end and full spoon on the other. We all kid ourselves in the beginning, thinking a spork is adequate. If all you need is a spoon, get a spoon. If you want a fork, a spork just doesn't do the job. And the Duo is very lightweight and comes in at $7.

EDIT found this on the googlizer (Scientists have sniffed out the reason for the musty, "metallic" odor you smell after handling coins or touching metal objects. A new study finds that the smell of iron is, ironically, a type of human body odor, created by the breakdown of oils in skin after touching objects that contain the element.) for anyone interested.

Personally I think titanium is used as a marketing angle and in my experience, totally uneccessary. I specifically went out and purchased really good quality kitchen cutlery and then stainless steel plates, cups, cooking pots and a few other things. 2 pots and the cutlery are over 20 years old, and still look new. I've been very aware of heated metals leeching into food, so kept everything household grade, just more robust versions.

Wow I'm quite shocked by this review, I own this set (amongst others) this is my work set and been using for a year or so. I started using Titanium because it was lighter to transport in my work bag and because with some stainless steel i can smell that metallic smell you refer to. I have not been aware of any smell or taste from any of the Titanium sets I own which include Toaks, fitness city, life adventure and Boundless voyage. The machining looks perfect in mine I do wonder what you have got there. Titanium cutlery isn't coated either. I do agree that the polished ones look nicer and are marginally nicer in the mouth but the polished surfaces are susceptible to scratches.
