Very well explained. I think this is the best explanation I've seen in a video format.

This is superb. I have never heard about the last stage (stage 5) in Ehri's model. I would like to know how you got to know about the 5th stage. Could you pls provide me any reference. I am currently writing a study guide on it so I would really appreciate.

Sometimes the research shows just the 4 stages. But I reference the 5th as automatic reading. It’s similar to consolidated, but with a focus on fluency. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

Does identifying first word in spoken sentence become part of alphabetic principle?
@KathleenJasperEdD6 ай бұрын
Identifying the first word in a spoken sentence is related to phonological awareness, not the alphabetic principle. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC

Hi, is alphabetic stage the similar concept with phonetic stage(from pre-phonetic to conventional)? And is alphabetic principle the same concept of phonics?
@KathleenJasperEdD4 ай бұрын
The alphabetic stage and the phonetic stage (often referred to in various stages from pre-phonetic to conventional) are related concepts, but they are not the same. Alphabetic Stage vs. Phonetic Stage: The alphabetic stage refers to the stage of reading and writing development where children understand that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language. This stage is part of a larger developmental continuum in literacy. The phonetic stage, on the other hand, is often used to describe a stage in spelling development where children use their understanding of sounds (phonemes) to represent words. In this stage, children begin to spell words the way they sound, which may not always be correct but demonstrates their grasp of phonetic principles. Alphabetic Principle vs. Phonics: The alphabetic principle is the understanding that there are systematic and predictable relationships between letters and sounds. It is a foundational concept in reading instruction, where children learn that letters represent sounds and these sounds are combined to form words. Phonics is the method of teaching reading and writing that focuses on developing the alphabetic principle. Phonics instruction involves teaching students how to connect sounds with letters or groups of letters (graphemes) and how to use this knowledge to decode unfamiliar words. In essence, the alphabetic principle is the concept, while phonics is the instructional method used to teach that concept. They are closely related, but not identical.
