What is the AM Expanded Band?

Discovering the AM expanded band from 1602 kHz upwards. everything you need to know.
Some countries licence stations in this part of the spectrum but in Europe it's where lots of pirates are found.

I often get dutch pirates on 1635khz and even up to 1666khz in Germany

Theres almost nothing on mediumwave now that I could hear. I remember when it used to come alive with broadcasts in Dutch, French, German and Norwegian powering across the sea. Not now!

Maybe you got bad noise level because over 90% of electronics have a bad impact on MW. I hear alot on my QTH in Bosnia.

We have lots of stations between 1600-1700 kHz. 1630 is from Iowa, 1700 from Texas, and I’m in Wentzville Missouri.

A few stations are on 1700 here in U.S. Very few want it though.

Canada in 1610, 1650, 1670; NYC Korean on 1660; N.J. Spanish in 1680; Ramapo, N.Y. on 1700; TIS on 1710.

the Caribbean beacon used to be a regular on 1610khz but i have not heard it for few years up here in the north east uk

I understand the term extended medium wave band to be the frequency range from 1.62 MHz to 2.7MHz. For instance the Eddystone radio has the medium wave band in two sections - one from 540kHz to 1.2MHz and the other from 1.2MHz to 2.7MHz. I think the extended band is mostly used for shipping signals - it doesn't have any broadcasting stations like in the range 540kHz to 1.62MHz.

There also used to be rather unusual base to mobile nbfm telephones on 1750kHz. Unusually low frequency for that!

Oh yes indeed. from 1640 to 1780 khz I think. I use to hear some fascinating personal conversations plus on around 31 Mhz

I heard faint German pop music one night. It seemed to come in and out of existance without much fading. Several years ago there was a local radio operator talking. I could hear it indoors through interference, but I could barely make out some words because of single side band and high strength. They could have expanded the band further because the tropical band is now empty.

Every around 22 utc they are pirate on end of MW and many are in the NETHERLANDS !!!
