What is the ASROC Weapon System on US Navy destroyers and ships? This 1963 Declassified US Navy Training film on the ASROC weapon system and its use within the Destroyer fleet in the 1960s provides a great overview of the anti-submarine rocket and launcher. MK111 Tech in the 80s. The digital section on that thing was absolutely insane.

Boy does this bring back memories. Our ASROC launcher in the Long Beach was amidships and it was quite an experience watching it being loaded, with the tech crawling into the launcher. We UNREP'ed several ASROC missiles. I was FA Division Talos 1974-77.

Tought Id search youtube hopeful for maybe a launching vid for Asroc... but WOW! This gave me a sense of nostalgia bigtime!. I was on the ASROC handling team on the USS Marvin Shields in San Diego in the 70's. Great memories, man who else but Asroc crews would be looking this shit up

Very impressive video. I was aboard the JP Kennedy Jr. DD-850 in 1964-1965. I believe our ASROC carried only torpedos. Probably , also the DASH drone . During the two years enjoyed quite a few cruises.

I worked on this on USS Manley (DD-940), USS Vogelgesang (DD-862), USS Comte de Grasse (DD-974), and USS Fletcher (DD-992). Manley was the best for it’s aft mounted launcher.

The good old days, i teported to the armory during GQ. If our ASROC was too hot, the ship yawed too far , the alarm sounded, if you were outside the skin of the ship, you'd better freeze in place. Our orders were clear, shoot to kill!! It was the Cold War.....1970, we were in the Indian Ocean , plenty of Soviet activity. Damn, i miss those days. I was a tincan sailor!! Dealy class...USS Vesole DD878!! May she rest in peace!!

On the USS Charles R Ware (DD-865), the ASROC was aimed and fired by the MK111 Fire Control System, located in UB Plot, alongside sonar !

You are correct, Sir. That was the layout aboard the USS McKean (DD-784) also. Served 1978-1981, STG.

Interesting that the earlier version uses a digital computer while the later one went analog. Wonder why? The digital was maybe more complicated and harder to maintain than it needed to be?

STG AS DIV USS Bausell DD845. We never said Fire. We said SHOOT ! Green board 1l ,(standby-on deck alarm, launcher doors open and rail extends). Green board 2 SHOOT ! actually shot a practice rocket at a training target.

Were ASROC launches controlled by a 2-man/2-'button' method in order to avert erroneous- or rogue firings by just one operator ?

no, just the shorting plug that was just to make the tourists feel safe, each cell had a brass lock that was removed to enable the cell for firing, the nuke depth charge battery was kept in the CO's safe and an arm guard was at the magazine
