Good list Rob. I’ve never tried the Springbank 25 though, I just recently saw it on sale for 699 US. For me, I have to put Lagavulin 25 on top follow by HP25.

Recently found your reviews, and been enjoying them. Your top 5 is similar to mine, and the top 3 can change according to my mood. I love the Laphroaig 25, my #1, and then the Highland Park 25, the Balblair 1990, Glengoyne and Springbank. I also appreciate the Bowmore 25. For sheer value for dollar though, I have found nothing that beats the Balblair 1990, at $167 a bottle that I paid here in AB. Great review again.

A few weeks ago I got the 1991 Balblair bottled in 2018. I quickly opened and tasted it and loved it so much I swiftly ordered another one for a special moment in the future. Comfortably my favourite whisky of all I've tried.

@@welshtoro3256 if I felt I had the money to spare I would. For a 26-27 yr old whisky it's a bargain at £120-140 but it's still hard to justify too many of them. I have ordered the 1999-2015 bottling though. The price hike on the new range is the thing that bothers me most.

Interesting that you found the Glenlivet 25 disappointing. I recently bought a bottle of batch 0115b, bottled in 2015. I very much like it but it doesn't make my top 6. Most of the complaints I have seen were from people who wanted it to be more like the 21 Archive, which is a tropical fruit bomb. The 25 is a completely different expression. To each his own. My top six 25 year old distillery bottlings are: 1. Talisker. The cask strength 2005 release at 57.5% ABV. I bought a case of it back in the day and still have a couple of bottles left. Starting in 2011 Diageo has been diluting the Talisker 25 to 45.6% ABV. Still good but not in the same league as the the prior releases. 2. Highland Park 3. Macallan 4. Dalwhinnie Cask Strength 5. Bowmore 6. Dalmore

Just wondering how you get to sample all of these WONDERFUL 25yo whiskies?! I've only had Glenfiddich 25 on a Caribbean vacation where a GENEROUS shot (~2oz) was $60. Delicious stuff, but I have no idea where it stacks against the brands I normally enjoy (around the 18-year price point...).

Rob, if you get a chance to find it try the gordon mcphail mortlach 25. It is incredible stuff, better than the regular mortlach line for me and it is also cheaper. The only 25 you mentioned that I have not had is glenmorangie. I completely agree with your glenlivet assessment. I love the HP25, but prefer the older 48% version much more. Had a lot more first fill sherry in it. Speaking of springbank, I wonder how the glen scotia 25 stacks up being a campbelltown whisky. The Glen Scotia 15 is excellent.

This is more your preferred tasting whiskeys as opposed to what are best. For example with highland park, Springbank and tallisker in there, you’re never going to choose a speyside gem like a Glenfarclas 25.

The Grandeur 007 25 yr I had was a bad bottle. Wouldn’t be fair to judge it. The Cork was damaged. The 009 is a 24 yr and also had 27 yr in it. The 009 is in my top 5 of all time.

Agreed! Old Aultmore in a decent ex-bourbon cask, or casks, is top notch. The distillery release of the 18 (Travel Retail only) is delicious but well overpriced these days. I've had a few independent single barrel releases of 20+ years Aultmore and they are fantastic (cask strength, natural colour, etc) and much better value than the distillery prices which I can't afford.

We've come full circle Rob. My first (crap) KZbin comment was your overrated whisky review. We are both in a better place. Best value 25 is Balblair 1990 and 1991 (27). The new 25 by Inver House won't be bought by Balblair lovers at the joke price. Talking of ridiculous price - HP and Springbank. I'm certain that the Springbank 25 is magnificent and if I had the money or a drinking pal to share with I would get it. Unfortunately neither is the case. Ageing whisky can produce great stuff but there are great whiskies at a younger age and in some ways a more true reflection of whisky. Cracking good review Rob. WT

Welsh Toro just re-reading some of the comments as they usually come in hot right off the hop so I tend to miss important parts to the comment. It’s unfortunate you don’t have someone to split the Springbank 25 bottle with. Perhaps masters of malt or whisky exchange?

Thinking about it Rob, 25 year old whisky is elite stuff these days. I have a Laphroaig 25 and I enjoy it but it's nowhere near worth the asking price. I think most people would prefer younger Laphroaig with a bit of power and peaty goodness. (Young, independent Laphroig is usually excellent and great value.) A few years ago I bought a wonderful Cooper's Choice Bunnahabhain 27 (25/27) ex-bourbon for £70 when indi Bunna was still the best value Islay. I also have a fantastic Bladnoch 26 (ex-bourbon) by Gordon & Macphail. I had a great Mortlach 24 (refill-sherry) for £125 some years ago too. It seems that the prices for old whisky are running away from us now, even with the independents which offer better value but can be risky and difficult to find for many.

I know, I'm sitting on an ocean of interesting and highly desirable stuff I'm too scared to open. I can't imagine the right occasion to do it. I try to have good everyday whisky in the tank to limit the expense but I realise that is top range stuff for most people. I just bought a Clynelish 14 and the regular Lot 40 for that reason. They are first class whiskies! It's crazy. My wife and I have regular jobs and I've been extremely indulgent the last few years. I definitely need to ease off.

I agree, the Glenfarclas 25 is a beginner 25. I was not impressed. I agree with the Glengoyne 25 and Bunnahabhain 25 as great whisky. The HP 25 is good also. Great review.

@@WhiskyInThe6 I do. My favorite is talisker distillers edition and Lagavulin 16. I prefer peated over non-peated. Although I’m not too big of a fan of Ardbeg uigeadail, laphroaig 10. Ledaig 10 was acceptable.
