I'm a brand new chameleon owner. I really appreciate all time and effort you put into creating these videos; they are fantastic! I had planned for a Veiled, but purchased a four month old Jackson's (complete impulse buy) at a recent expo (08/15/20). I'm jumping into this adventure on the deep end, lol. Your advice has been extremely helpful, so thank you!

Congrats on joining the cham fam! And I’m happy to hear the videos are helpful :) I would make sure to get your chameleon tested for parasites since most Jackson’s sold at expos tend to be wild caught.

We absolutely fell in love with a pied Veiled Chameleon at a chain pet store and I'll never forget him. He was as close to the front of the enclosure as he could get, reaching out with his front feet wanting to be picked up and held. As much as we loved him and had thought about and researched getting one anyway, we knew of course it would not be fair for us or the animal to basically impulse buy a chameleon. We know they are a commitment, and are expensive to care for plus we rent so that would not have been a great idea. As tempting as it was, it wasn't the right time. But one day it will be and the right animal will come along.

I got my 6 year old, male, vieled cham for free from my neighbor. However, with needing to completely get him a new enclosure, lighting, heating, and him coming to me malnourished with a URI. I have probably spent 600$ USD in the past month. Now, to me, it is completely worth it because (unlike the stereotype) my Jingo is the nicest chameleon I ever met. "Puppydog tame" is the best term to describe him.

My first Cham was a female Veiled Chameleon and we called her Fiona. First time I saw her the shop assistant let her out and she walked along her arm, onto mine that sat on my hand looking up at me and it was love at first sight. I lost her when she was 9mths old after an operation to relieve her off so many eggs when she was gravid. Got her home and she slipped away a few weeks later as her wee body just couldn’t recover from such an op - still cry when I look at her pictures in my man cave. I held her in my hands as she lost her fight. Now got two males Ziggy aka Godzilla and Merlin. Wouldn’t hesitate to get another female though if I felt it was the right thing to do.

Edit: I just though of this while I added the comment but the reason I’m getting a chameleon now is because I randomly look up funny lizard videos and I saw one of your videos and then I found myself watching tons of chameleon videos and I started doing tons and tons of research and my parents didn’t even know and I didn’t even know why I found them so cool. I have a baby veiled chameleon, and in a few months will upgrade him/her. I live in a desert( New Mexico) pretty dry and cold in the winter. Would I be able to make it partially out of wood to keep a decent and constant heat. Maybe with a wood back bottom and sides. It would still have good ventilation considering the 4 foot screen door. Currently it is really hard to keep good humidity in the enclosure, main reason I want to do the partial wood thing.

I know this vid is kind of old - but I so appreciate your vids. I bought a young female Panther chameleon and I love her - she wants nothing to do with me, but hopefully in time and working with her I can get her where she doesn't stress . . . as much. A few weeks later, I bought a young male Veiled. The breeder that I purchased from apparently has worked with him as he'll kind of stress at first, but then after a couple of minutes he's calm and back to green and happy to hang out on me. I know they can be difficult, but with your vids - hopefully, I can give them an awesome life. You can't help but fall in love with these strange, interesting and wonderful creatures. Bonus in the evenings apparently the fun game is find the cham. I can always find my female in her enclosure, but my male he's got some hidey hole that I have still not found. Guess he wins every night :)

@@NeptunetheChameleon I just watched the video you provided in your original response. you stated that bugs or bug parts could end up in the water and that could cause a nasty water situation. I come from the aquarium world where water is filtered and the filtration is supplemented by the fish, plants, and invertebrates that reside in the water column/system. The critters (fish included) will eat any excess waste that the chameleons will produce. I am talking about a small water pool at the bottom of a 60" tall enclosure with a small waterfall mid way down that would mainly be there for the purposes of water filtration. I might even have the water flow over dense moss to filter even more. I guess what I am getting at is whether or not chameleons are in any danger of drowning or the like if presented with standing water?

They are such awesome creatures but they can be expensive to keep with their vivariums and setup/care requirements but they (or any other pet) never ask to come into our homes. I am able to set aside some of my wages every month in a small fund to take care of my boys Ziggy, Merlin and my Degu Bo with any vet bills and so forth. Let me first start off by saying. Your chameleons are amazing. Also as far as me. I always had a passion for chameleons and other lizards. I always loved reptiles. As a young kid i always was fascinated with dinosaurs and realizing that reptiles and the descendants of dinosaurs. I always wanted a chameleon as a little kid. Than i discovered iguanas and i wanted one of them and finally had 4 of them. They can out grow your house. Lol but yes i also noticed you've named your chameleon Neptune. Thats cool. I have bearded dragons. I just got my orange hypo yesterday. And my oldest bearded dragon is named Jupiter. And my new beardie is named Mars. I was goin to get a chameleon. But they just require too much for me. Im a busy man. So i wouldn be able to take care of them like i want. Bearded dragons are more simpler to manage. I love chameleons. But i cant get one cuz of the required maintenance. But yours is amazing. I love lizards. They some amazing animals

No chameleon species should not be handled often. But if you have proper care, and a chameleon with a good temperament, then they should be able to be handled for short durations (5-10 min).

Live plants are the safest option for a veiled chameleon since they are known to eat live plants. If you choose to use fake plants, make sure they are silk leaves and not hard plastic.

How do chameleons do with bodies of water? could you have a tall enclosure with the bottom having a pool of water? I was thinking of having a tall enclosure with a foam 3D background, live plants, vines, branches, plants, etc. while also having basically a small aquarium at the bottom that has a water fall going from the top of the enclosure to the bottom and back again. I'm still trying to figure out what is realistic. if I could give you an idea of what I am thinking of I would refer you to SerpaDesigns here on youtube, I'm sure you have heard of him. To put a point on this comment I really just want to know if pools of water might be bad for chameleons?
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 4 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, pools of water in a chameleon enclosure would be a very bad idea. Waterfalls are also a bad idea, and any other forms of standing water due to their increased risk of growing bacteria. Not to mention chameleons are not aquatic animals in the slightest 😅. The only recommended water sources/features for a chameleon are a misting system, fogger, and a dripper. I'd recommend you check out my video about water and chameleons: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ-nap-KZpx3b8U Having a 3D background, live plants, vines, branches, etc. are all great ideas and great options. I would just not do the waterfall and water at the bottom.

Deciding between a screen or glass enclosure depends on what environment you have where you live, and the species of chameleon you plan on keeping. There are also hybrid enclosures that are a happy in-between option. I strongly you suggest using the search bar on my channel -- I have over 60 videos about chameleons. The chameleonacademy.com is also a GREAT resource as well as the chameleonforums.com.

Unfortunately I've seen hundreds of chameleons die from keepers who were unaware of the care involved in taking care of a chameleon. I don't know which video of mine they're going to see first, so I make it a point to talk about it often and frequently because I know it can prevent chameleon deaths. But I am also aware lots of people find my videos after they already have purchased a chameleon which is totally fine too. That's why I have put in MANY hours into creating free content to help keepers learn how to care for these amazing creatures. I wouldn't make my videos in the first place if I wasn't supportive of people trying to learn and care for their chameleons 😅. I'm always happy to help chameleon keepers of all experience levels.
