Another plus point to remember about the Sword & Shield is that it's the only weapon choice where you can use potions, etc without having to first sheathe your weapons.

This is some great advise, but as a GS main, I have to mention it: please sheath the weapon when moving. There's even a silkbind move centered on sheathing. This single thing will change this weapon from the clumsiest things on earth into the show stopper it truly is.

Absolute truth. Same goes for hammer and HBG as well. While one does get a shield, repositioning is bst done sheathed, not drawn.

For new potential gunsexuals, I actually tend to recommend heavy bowgun. Early game ammo management can be really difficult, so having access to wyvernheart as a source of free ammo is very helpful. It also is just badass.

When I first started the Monster Hunter series back in 3 Ultimate I had tried sword and shield and didn't like that. After that I immediately switched to Great Sword as a complete noob and fell in love with it, and have mained it ever since. Now after putting as much time into it as I have started to try out charge blade which is highly technical to use, but highly rewarding. My advice to anyone who is newer to the series is just go ahead and try out every weapon even if it may seem daunting. While there are weapons that are easier for newer people to get used to you may actually find that one of the more "advanced" weapons actually resonates with you better and you get the hang of it really quick. I also advise that you try to play with multiple weapon types. My one regret is that I got too into great sword and didn't branch out sooner (used it from 3 Ultimate all the way through Icebourne) as even fighting the same monster with different weapons can feel wildly different.

I am the same with gunlance and hammer, but one of the reasons was it was so much rare mats to upgrade weapons. In rise they said its a lot easier to upgrade weapons so we can try them all. Even 2 different weapons from same category can be played so different, rise seems to be doing everything right i can not wait to play.

Hunting a monster can be such a drastically different experience depending on your weapon. If your usual choice is giving you trouble against a certain monster, there's nothing wrong with switching to another weapon. You may find stuff to like about it that you didn't see before. Don't be afraid to experiment.

As a MH Veteran since the PSP days..... Great video! Very educational for new players and very refreshing for veterans like me. I personally like the vanilla weps and main in the SNS and Bow since the beginning and I can honestly say this is spot on. MH Rise has also tweaked the weapons as well with adding in the silk bugs mechanics so I personally cant wait to combine combos and aerial combos on top of what I already love so much as well! Happy Hunting!

i wouldn't use bow guns in the beginning as the ammo upkeep can be expensive personally ive always loved the hammer cuz once your used to it you can stay model, do big damage and create lots of openings with stuns on top of that the weapon can ignore Armor hits with its charge attacks and it just feels good to play for me ever since my Freedom unite days even if i didn't truly main it till world. Note: i know you probably already did this because when i was looking at the charge blade gameplay i saw you weren't charging the files as you need to lock them into your shield i suggest looking at arrekks gaming tutorial on the weapon

Imo the best weapons for a beginners are LS, SnS, LBG, and Lance. The LS counters are really good “get-out-of-jail-free” cards for noobs with good damage. SnS has a really simple moveset that doesn’t take long to learn but enough depth for mastery. LBG is a really mobile pewpew so you won’t have to worry too much about getting hit while you learn the monsters’ movesets. And finally Lance is a really simple moveset with an even more simple playstyle, block poke poke poke block again poke poke poke.

I personally wouldn't suggest the Gunner weapons for absolute newbies due to how much more damage you take, critical distance, Bow's stamina management being crucial to survival and speed in hunting, and the differences between the bowgun's different ammo types and Bow's different shot patterns and shot levels (different types have different critical distances) - You get punished very, very hard for flubbing stamina management on Bow and the way it is shaping up to play in Rise is looking to lean back into max-charge sniping weakpoints and hammering them with Power Shot and Irregular Volley.

Hammer. Hammer is by far the best beginner weapon. Easy combos, no gauge management, no phials, and its fast enough to allow you to dodge while also training you to take pot shots on head, and attack during openings. It is the easiest weapon to get "accidental/unintentional" knockouts on a monster allowing you to practice going all out when a monster is stunned/down. Second to none for mounting with spin to win, and ledge hoping. SNS is way more complicated and doesnt have as much knock down power for a beginner. New players i feel can get discouraged by seeing those tiny numbers from the faster weapons while also not knowing move patterns yet. Hammer gives them medium to big numbers, allows them to accidentally knock down monsters through experimental play, and its fast moving, and has aerial/mounting silk bind moves that are simple and easy.

I would like to say that the full release game does explain rudimentary silk vine moves like ZR + B for recovery and many more. If you’re just getting into monster hunter I recommend you pay attention to the text boxes at the beginning. I know it’s a chore, but they do explain the most helpful features.

Lance. Extremely simple moveset, not commital at all, no meter or resource mechanic to think about, can panic-block most attacks, defensive gameplay that allows for easy study of monster movesets and tells with minimal risk WHILE doing damage at the same time and not just running around the monster trying to find an opening... I remember the first time I fought Seregios in 4U. I had NO IDEA what the monster could do and I still beat him in a decent time without even having to use a single potion, because the Lance is THAT safe. It almost becomes "easy mode" in a way IMO.

I honestly believe that Dual Blade is not a good beginner weapon namingly, it gives you a bad habit of playing too risky the fact that it has a longer combo can sometimes leaves you with less stamina to dodge leaving you in a much more vulnerable state. Hammer on the other hand is easier for newer players IMO since you can charge up and do a hit and run. Gives you better positioning and you can aim where to hit the monster while having decent mobility and time to dodge when a monster attack is coming.

I would have added lance, but I agree with your other choices. The play style is not for everyone as it is a bit repetitive and not very flashy (at least in world where I mained it), but being able to guard many attacks safely while also having a low commitment and fast 3 poke combo and having a counter attack that activates if you get hit rewards players for taking the time to learn a monster's moves. World was my first mh, and personally, tanking a nergi dive bomb with ease while most weapons would superman dive feels pretty good imo

Generally great vid Blunty. As someone whose played the series for just over 14 years you were pretty much spot on. One thing thing with the new Rise HH which you were a bit off on is the walking speed unsheathed. Press ZR, it performs self improvement, once that is done you have the second or third highest (or close) unsheathed move speed in the game (just behind dual blades and possibly sword and shield/light bowgun, can't remember off hand). ZR also has invincibility frames in the beginning which work a bit like a block once you get the timing down. As for the best starter weapon for a beginner, hands down its the sword and shield. The only downside it has is the reach can be a bit short but it has amazing move speed, fluid combos, can work with raw, elemental or status depending on the playstyle. It has severing damage, ko/exhaust damage, can block (now has a guard point as well), and has native aerial attacks. On top of that it can use items while unsheathed, has excellent wirebug arts (including one which makes you invincible for a considerable period of time and deals good damage) and actually has a hell of a lot of depth so it's easy to use and difficult to master which can be very rewarding.

apparently yes. my friends have been playing since MH on psp days in 2006 but this is my first one and its really fun and a lot of mechanics have been added in such as the palamute, wirebugs and silk combos and wyvern riding so ya i recommend getting it. ive been playing it all week since release. the game's UI and info is overwhelming and there r some helpful text and few tutorials but its still a LOT to memorize and learn . however theres so many guides on youtube alone and i google search a lot of things about items or crafting or item locations so ya you can just use those to help you even more.

Button mashers: Dual blades. Button mashing with purpose: Sword and shield. Even better at button mashing now: Hunting horn. Done button mashing, can use wirebugs, combos and strategy: Long sword. This is how I (someone completely new the MH franchise) progressed in personal skill with weapons. I was then able to loop back and was better at the dual blades, sword/shield and hunting horn.

I like simple weapons that don’t have a lot of combos to memorize and I tend to change weapons sometimes depending on the monster... I’m a Hunting Horn main most of the time but with charge-y monsters like Diablos or Agnaktor, I’d use the Lance to tank the hit and counter once you get an opening. But I’d also use the Sword And Shield with the really fast monsters like Nargacuga to keep up.

Personally I started with bow, its pretty simple, just shoot the monster. BUT i didn't really "get" monster hunter until I used insect glaive. Now I'm in love and I'll never switch. Look at it this way, most of the weapons in the game, you can kind of have the experience of them, in other games. However, what they did with insect glaive, I've never really seen it anywhere else. Maybe charge blade is just as unique, never tried it. Just saying, if you want to make the most of monster hunters unique identity, I'd suggest eventually moving to the more complicated weapons, insect glaive specifically is just so satisfying.

Good video, but I would definitely make the case for hammer being way more accessible to newer players than lbg, bow, and hh. The combos are easy to learn, the head positioning is simple to understand and gives the player an objective to go after at the start of every fight, and the stamina buildup is very intuitive. The more intermediate parts of it are knowing to sheath constantly, rolling, knowing when to block, and how to get out of a move that uses stamina. All relatively simple to learn with a low skill ceiling.

Personally, I see Sword and Shield as the definitive beginner weapon for what it does and what it teaches. Its short reach forces players to get up close and personal. A good way to learn how to dodge and move around monsters. Its combo of slash, blunt, and aerial damage teaches players when is the best time to do the different types of attacks on their arsenal. Plus, it has a shield that may save players in some unavoidable situations. So all in all, it teaches how to position to best avoid or even bait moves, use the right move in the right time, while also lowering the risk. I know SnS is a powerhouse. I'm a proud user in Gen and World. So I'm not low-balling it here.

"There is no best weapon, not objectively at least." . I guess you never saw the 11k greatsword smash. That said, I agree with this list. The hunting horn is probably the most complicated of the 4 you listed. But it's nice because the hunting horn can still be useful even if they are sitting in a corner reading sheet music and buffing their party. And then the player can transition into actually fighting the monsters once they are more comfortable with their melodies. As a solo player though I don't recommend the hunting horn to start. It can be a bit overwhelming to have to manage buffs, damage, survival, correct input sequences, knowing when to stop and just play a list of queue'd melodies all at once. I would add the greatsword in there too. The greatsword does nasty damage even if you have no clue what you are doing with it. And the player will slowly learn how to utilize the bigger hits as the bigger hits become more relevant to actually killing the later monsters. . And contrary to popular belief, long sword is near the bottom of the list of weapons I would suggest to a new player. Right down there with charge axe and insect glaive. I personally know two people who started with the long sword, and they NEVER built their spirit meter. Like not once. Parry felt too risky to these new players and they found themselves dropping the spirit combo often due to the monster moving. Both of these players devolved into a playstyle where they just ran at the monster and left clicked. Which lemme tell you... is probably the most worthless way to use long sword. This type of playstyle with great sword might get the user killed, but they will at least be putting out damage. If they just spam left click with 0 spirit meter on the long sword they are basically slapping the monster with a pool noodle. Insect glaive and charge axe are the same way with their powerups. Players who don't understand how to utilize these weapon functions will end up being more of a liability than anything. Jacking the monsters health up by merely existing in the party, while putting out no extra damage to compensate for their spot on the team. . Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Bow, Greatsword, and Hunting Horn. Hunting horn being the most complicated of the bunch. That is what I would suggest to a new player.

In an interview with one of the game developers that ask this question. Now in the past, Most people would have agreed that sword and shield is the most pick weapon for Beginners. But in the interview they had said, Over the years the sword and shield has really evolved and now has a higher Ceiling curves in ever before. And that the long sword has really become The new favourite weapon for beginners. Now this that seed I never played world but I played MHGU my first MH game. I used Sword and shield For a few hunts but then I switch to bowl, And then later in the game too heavy bird gun, And then switch axe lol..... So yes, Any weapon can be used. The important thing is just try them all and use the ones that feel the best to you. Now in rise I'm going to probably Main Switch axe and hunting horn, And I probably use one of the bowgun, But I am really interested in trying the insect lav at some point.

Your weapon choice guide mostly cover dodge style of play. You need to experience more about shield base weapon and how it differ than evade type weapon. It is really beginner friendly such as it relax playstyle really help you familiarise with the control. Weapon like heavy bowgun with shield attachment made you like a tank and you just need to stand there to shield the attack. The range attack also help so you don't need to unsheath and run towards the monster. For Lance, although it isn't flashy like gunlance, it's mobility are in medium range but it attack are quick and it is easier to positioned yourself. Its guard are also strong and you can play defensively first as a beginner but aggressive playstyle are right way for this weapon.

I definitely think this version of the greatsword is far more beginner-friendly than that of Worlds, but that's if you factor in wirebug stuff, which I believe you avoided in this video to focus on the bread and butter of each weapon? At any rate, it's a far faster weapon than it was previous, with a multitude of new hit-and-run tactics that really help ease into a faster playstyle without demanding even more positional knowledge. From the silkbind sheathe to reposition or avoid attacks (while giving an ATK buff) to the combo additions from vertical wirebug into a helmsplitter, etc; it feels like it can play SUPER fast without needing to learn super complex mechanics, and still hit like a truck. Overall a good video though!

Hey, I know this is for newbies but I'll give you my thoughts about this video as a veteran of sorts to the franchise. 1) I'm pretty glad you did not include the Long Sword as a newbie-friendly weapon because it isn't one, IMO. Effective use of the weapon involves good reactions and/or predictions especially with MH Rise giving it more counter-type moves. It's a very tempo-based (need to know when to cancel into a counter so you can keep the offense going) and positioning-heavy (so you don't trip other Blademasters) weapon just like the Great Sword. Unfortunately, its flashy moveset along with its reach and fast attacks attract way more newbies that can't use it properly. You're right to feel that way with the Long Sword. It's not supposed to "feel good" using it ineffeciently because the way that it happened to you, it sounds like, was you being more defensive than the intended use of the weapon which is supposed to be a 100% offense and no defense playstyle. 2) The way you described Gunlance, IMO, is actually how Lance is supposed to feel like. Gunlance is the more mobile and more offensive cousin of Lance because its kit is used for a run-and-gun approach that involves animation cancelling in between reloads and attacks to keep on the offense. Unlike the Lance which can perform the duelist playstyle due to how sluggish and defensive its playstyle is, the Gunlance would rather avoid threat zones because they can still deal damage very efficiently without having to headhog thanks to the shellings. Practice doing a hit-and-run playstyle for this weapon and you will love how mobile it actually is. 3) Both morphing weapons are actually extremely offensive. In fact, they're two of the most offensive Blademaster weapons who can keep attacking almost nonstop when used correctly (like the LS and DB). A good use of phials for Switch Axe and Charge Blade can easily mean the monster tripping after every good discharge timing. SA may have the easier skill entry because there's not much of a "meter management" thing with it while CB is one of the highly execution-heavy and technical of the weapons because there is an actual "meter management" to it. SA can play like the LS except you have to rely on sheathing for repositioning while LS can hug and counter to reset offense. CB, on the other hand, emphasizes proper timing in attacks just like the GS, while watching out for overcharge (when the phials gauge start to go red and all your attacks bounce off), staying on one spot for a bit to transfer the charge to either your shield or your sword, and then discharging phials at the right time with proper positioning. 4) Insect Glaive's aerial maneuvers, IMO, should only be used for two things: evasion and stacking mounting damage. The aerial IG playstyle is extremely ineffective and very costly when used all the time. You have i-frames doing certain moves that are only available to you when grounded while being airborne leaves your very vulnerable to so many attacks with magic hitboxes (Mizu and Magna can hit way above on some attacks than what the attack animation shows). Being on the air also decreases your DPS significantly because it's very rare for weak spots to be found above ground level, and even when they do, they usually need to be broken first before becoming a weak spot, which aerial IG will have a very difficult time pulling off with imprecise targetting and the already aforementioned decreased DPS.

As a new player, I went straight to the switch axe as it looked cool, however it is so hard to take out monsters with when trying to learn the basics. The SNS isn't flashy but really is the most beginner friendly weapon.

Personally I found the lance to be easiest. It’s just poke poke poke block.

Well I never claimed to be an expert at long sword, in fact I'm pretty sure I specifically said I had trouble in getting into it's deeper mechanics... but I'm glad you decided to be arrogant and passive aggressive a out it instead of offering up a useful suggestion for other people to learn from. "TYPICAL LONG SWORD PLAYER" ;P )

That ig gameplay was painful lmao... but it's understandable, it's not your main weapon. I'd play even worse if someone handed me a bow

Man I played mhgenerations and mh4u for a few years both on the 3ds. I wouldn’t say I’m a veteran player but I for sure know my way around and I can’t wait for this to come out.

MH community really doesn't need to argue about the best weapon. It is simple which weapon is the best.... Greatsword is the best. Great points in the vid!

I would also put in the "best" category DB, SA, Bow, Bowguns, Lance, Gunlance, Horn, CB, Hammer, IG and even longsword. Horn was probably my most played weapon in base Rise.
