Solid picks. I became a birder in Central Florida, and was unaware how rare the snail kites were until I met someone who had come all the way from Ohio to see them. The major drawback is it's not great for migratory songbirds and warblers. You only get a couple of months for Spring and Fall migration where the cool nothern wood warblers are coming through, and they can be tough to see. I'm hoping to hit California, Arizona, Maine and Minnesota in the next few years.

I think this is a very solid list, the mid-Atlantic and Cape May have some pretty spectacular birding, but I think your rankings made sense. Great work Ed!

Yup. Traveled through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Minnesota, Washington State and found no better place than my own backyard here in Long Beach Ca.

Hi! I appreciate your take on the best birding spots. We have a lot of birds in Colorado, but not like the places you mentioned. We're planning a big year soon and can't wait for New England and maybe S. CAL.

Agree, Plum Island DURING the migration either way is dynamite.

Have to tell you a cool story about Plum Is. I am now 82. I live in Napa, CA. After retiring in 1994 I started working as a consultant to the Navy in 1996. I usually worked in DC or up at PNSY Engineering Dept. I became a bird watcher. I am a fervent BW but a lousy one (colorblind). I birded NH, ME and MA a lot. One Saturday during the Spring migration I was Warbling along the boardwalk at P.I. A woman ahead of me got suddenly very excited and was down on the boardwalk looking for a bird under it. She motioned me to come help. She was clearly a good birder. fFnally out scuttles a warbler. She said "do you know what that is?" I said " I think so, is it a Swainson's?" She said YES! It was the first one ever seen in MA. She took my name as a witness and later described the find on the Rare bird Alert.@@Adventure.Ed.EcoFit
