Ha! Could not agree more! First thing I want to say is that we appreciate your reviews, and one of the main reasons is that you buy your own stuff, and we can be sure you're not feeling any pressure to say good things because some company spotted you some free swag. I think I mentioned it when we were talking PLBs a few weeks ago, and there was that review for the SpotX from the guy that got it for free. Just didn't feel like we could trust it. Pretty much, Teton sports is the way to go on this from what we see. I especially like the prank potential on the straps for the Leaf compression sack. As we're still getting our legs together on day hikes, we're not doing overnight backpacking trips... yet. But some car camping to get closer to some spots we want to hit is in the works, and backpacking is likely to commence next year. A good bag is key because we can see some really wild temperature swings up here. If I can ask, how tall are you, and are the Teton's good for someone around 6 feet? I ask, because I've bought bags in the past, and felt like they were made for people that were 5'8" at most.
@DoseofDirt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks JR! I really appreciate that! I am 6ft tall and each of these bags work great for me! They are all 87 inches long except the Ubon which is about 82. You can get the Tetons in a ‘scout’ size that is a little shorter. I’ve found this works well (and is lighter) for the kids. I agree that reviews of stuff that someone purchased with their own money to use seem to carry a bit more weight! Chloe and I have LOVED backpacking. I’m sure you and Aria will as well when you decide to go for it! Sneak preview of another sleeping pad video coming in a few weeks: the trekology UL80 is awesome! 4 inches thick and SUPER comfortable!

The Army-issued sleep system is pretty awesome. It's a lightweight bag that goes inside of a heavier weight bag, and those go inside of a GoreTex shell. All three layers keep you warm and dry in -30F. But in warmer weather you can use one or the other of the bags. And it all compresses in a cinch sack pretty small.

Thanks Lee! Well done making your bag last so long! Yes, down is definitely awesome but so expensive! Thank you for being so informative. These details have to be considered for a winter backpacker. Because ill go out into the woods for a long time and want the cold weather. Its like a drug and camping, especially winter camping, got me off of drugs. Still dangerous like meth and opiates, but much more socially acceptable. Hey we all have to get high in some way or another. My plan is to buy 1 pound of goose down for $16 and place it into a cheap 650 fp camping quilt (i prefer the camping quilt) so i can modify it to withstand 0°F or less comfortably. Delicate operation i hear as down will get all over the place if not careful but i have what i believe to be a rather clever method in mind to keep my room from turning into a disaster. I have a lot of bags, but may have to see if I can find one of these for a good deal so I can take a look. Looks really promising! Thanks for watching!

I have used the Leef down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit without an issue. I contacted TETON sports and the images that state the EN rating incorrectly.

Hey Benjamin! I'm impressed you used it down to 5 degrees! That is some cold camping! I've taken it down to the low 20s, but had a few layers on. I'm usually a pretty warm sleeper, but there are so many other factors. For the EN ratings, are you saying that the numbers I have in the video at about 14:24 are incorrect? I hope they aren't, but if they are I definitely want to know! I couldn't find the info on Teton Sports website, but Amazon lists EN ratings that match mine (that's probably where I got them): Extreme -8F (-22C), Limit 23F (-5C), Comfort 34F (1C). Those seem consistent with my experience. If Teton Sports is saying they are different, could you let us know what they said they are? That would be super helpful! Thanks so much for watching!

@@DoseofDirt yes. In the back and forth I had with them 3.5 years ago they said the leg is 0 degree Fahrenheit bag. My experience over 10-20 nights in the last few years puts it around 5 degrees. I am not looking for ultralight but I am looking for sleeping bag for myself that is wide and comfy for nights of 50° or higher for summer camping. I am also looking for kids bags for toddlers to grow into. My issue is I'm fat but also I hate the bags that you slip and slide around on the tent with. Any suggestions for a mom of 3 on a budget?
@DoseofDirt2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I have been really happy with the Teton sports bag! They have a few others that are a bit wider and less of the 'mummy' style. I know my kids have really liked the Trailhead (one of the bags in this video), and you can also get it in a 'scout' size so it's a little bit shorter which makes it better for kids. It's plenty warm for 50 degrees. For you, I would say check out the other bags Teton Sports has to offer. They have a few that are square instead of the mummy shape, which may fit better. Here's a link to their site: tetonsports.com/collections/sleeping-bags Not sure if the code is still working, but you can try doseofdirt20 to get 20% off (they gave me this code for a backpack review I did). I'm not affiliated with Teton sports. They just have good products at a good price and have fantastic customer service. Hope you find something that works so you can enjoy adventures with your kids!

1:52 there is no opinion about it: cotton would _never_ be a good fiber for insulation in a sleeping bag. Also, I grew up pretty poor and we used the same Sears-brand car camping sleeping bags for years, they have synthetic batting insulation, yes they did have flannel as the inside liner, but the insulation was synthetic. I do a ton of thrifting and I look at the sleeping bags, almost every time I go. I have yet to see one that uses cotton insulation, even the sleepover ones made with cotton on the outside have synthetic insulation.
@DoseofDirt9 ай бұрын
I completely agree. Cotton is just a bad idea. I'm shocked that some budget bags are still using cotton insulation.

Anyone have any advice for the smallest packable mummy bag? Hiking in warmer climate
@GMiller752 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me what the numbers 250, 300 etc stand for with sleeping bags as the temperature rating is different from what these figures would suggest. I look at some sleeping bags but because it has these numbers rather than fill power or temperature rating I am put off purchasing them.
@DoseofDirt2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t noticed that. I looked up a few and the only thing I can think of is that it’s the model number or something. Doesn’t seem to have any relevance to the rating or size or anything that I can see. Temperature ratings can be tricky. Even when a company puts it in the name of the bag, it still might be an extreme rating or something-not representative of the conditions you’d want to actually use the bag in. If you can it’s good to get a bag that has an official EN rating, but a lot of smaller companies don’t do that.
@beetooex2 жыл бұрын
In the UK it's often the GSM rating. That's how many grams of fill per square metre of the material. In basic synthetic bags it seems to follow that 500gsm = 4 season, 350gsm = 3 season & 200gsm = 2 season
@GMiller752 жыл бұрын
@@beetooex thanks. Yeah the bags in question don't say gsm just the number which doesn't seem to relate. Tried looking on KZbin but ones labelled with 200 are being used in cold temps rather than in warmer weather hence finding it confusing. I look for weighted or fill power to help gauge season suitability but these ones have me scratching my head. As someone else said it seems more like a brand label. Not helpful when scanning pages quicky for a new sleeping bag.

You sleep in these bags without a sleeping pad? And what budget sleeping bag do you recommend if you do use them.. is there one I could grab for a four seasons?
@williampennjr.4448 Жыл бұрын
you have to be very careful when researching products on Amazon. There is so much false advertising. A bought a sleeping bag that they claimed in the title is a winter sleeping bag, but when I nearly froze one night I checked the stats only to discover its rated for 40 degrees. If the ground is 40 degrees that means the average air temperature probably wasn't less than 50 that entire month. I don't know who considered 50 F to be winter conditions anywhere in the U.S. or any place outside the equator for that matter.

@@DoseofDirt Alot of them are on the heavier side for sure just cause its more material in general. I find that The specs of the sleeping bags out there for wide people are in general measurements when the sleeping bag is flat. The true nature is for bigger people you need more shoulder wideness to compensate the dip your stomach protrudes up while sleeping which takes away some of the inches on the width. I think 38+ inches is the way to go because even if it is dead on 38 inches, the inner seam might take 1 or 2 inches. I unfortunately went with something alittle bigger and also expensive route with the Big Agnes Echo Rock. It can unzip to be use in multiple ways, weighs 3lbs, and has a thing where it hugs your sleeping pad so you wont slip off of it. Small details but it pulled me in. Other than that, Coleman, Teton makes great roomy stuff for the bigger person. Mmmm Staying away from mummy bags is also a strategy because mummy bags tends to contour closer to the body. BUT Quilts. Definitely Big people friendly.
@nalimmadkien56832 жыл бұрын
@@DoseofDirt So I'm 5"9, 290, and my sleep system is the Trekkology UL140 2.32lbs [10.8 x 4.9] (Wider sleeping pad with 4.9inch off the ground), Big Agnes Echo Park 40 Wide long 3lbs 2ou [8 x 6.5] The price range is around $250 range but I inadvertently made a semi light sleeping system. For the bigger people you have to spend a little bit more to accomodate for more material, fill, and if you don't wanna haul a 7+ lbs of material along with other things. BUT I think heavier sleeping equipment is fine because Bigger people can carry weight.

Very refreshing that you have a down to earth sense of what "budget" actually means! I do have to say, maybe it is time to update the video. The trailhead is *not* EN rated, just internally rated by Teton - their website shows this, and I've confirmed directly with customer support. The Leef 0 degree and 20 degree bags *are* EN rated. I would put the Teton 5 degree Sport Tracker bag at the same level as the 20 degree Leef. Really enjoyed the video, but like i said, the data should be updated.
