Been up here in the Samuels / Elmira area for 16 years It really depends on the road ya gotta plow Single lane gravel road ??? Get a Blower, once the berms build up the road gets narrow until you can't push it any longer. You also don't want those berms melting into the road bed come spring, upheave is bad enough without adding extra melt to it.. A snow blower will fire it out into the woods, how you drive that blower is up to you Tractor, Skid-steer ,whatever.. With either of those you can still use a blade for the spring thaw and the SLUSH :) Welcome to North Idaho

Some good points. If ya have a 4x4 get a plow for it.
@noc80766 жыл бұрын
You both have valid points. Get a truck if you have great distances to travel and need it for other long-range transportation. Get a tracked machine, dozer, if you need to push dirt in the summer, pull some logs, but NOT if it is for plowing. Do the calculations on ground pressure. A tractor 1/4 the weight of a dozer will have 4 times the ground pressure as the dozer, and with chains will get places and not slide where the dozer can not. Look at KZbin for dozers plowing, they are sliding all over the place. A tractor can be used for everything. A 50hp+/- will serve your property size well. Get chains with studs to use in the winter, and in the summer when pulling lumber. First thing is to take off the wheels and widen the stance to the max so it will be more stable. I have a Branson that has not had any issues other than those inflicted by myself. With a forestry winch and chains you can pull 5-8 logs out of the woods. You can also pull logs without a forestry winch, but have a way to hook up logging chains so you can lift the butt end off the ground. Smaller tractors like a 50hp can go places a skid-steer is useless. But they have limited tire size. I have made a 1/4" steel skid plate for the whole underside, and built a mount for a 4500lbs winch on the front for self recovery because of the tire size. Sinking in mud when brush hogging showed how well the winch worked. Do NOT skimp on the chains. It is better to get the best and pay 2x as much, they will last you a lifetime anyways. And do get a cab for your tractor! As for plowing snow, a bucket on the front, and a scraper blade on the back is great but for the largest drifts. Get a 8-9' blade. The smaller ones you have to offset to the side to move the snow outside the track of the machine. Wider blades can be angled more and make moving snow easier. Scraper blades can be used to maintain your gravel roads in the spring. In Scandinavia 99% of snow blowers are pulled behind the tractor so you do not have to twist around to back up all day. This works great but in the largest drifts which you can dig out with the bucket.

If you have a skid steer then you have all the plow you need. BOSS, Western ,and a lot of other companies make plow blades that fit skid steers and they move a lot of material. Almost every big snow removal company has one or more for the commercial lots.
@MrScoresby6 жыл бұрын
Josh: He made some good points about a packed snow base so you don't hang up on the ridges. But you already have a skid steer. Invest in chains and studded tires if the snow cover is going to persist. Spend your money on a third axis bucket rotator for the track hoe to clear ditches and create them. That is a tool that will work for road creation, maintenance and other dirt work all year round. If you need another light truck I would go for a 1 ton diesel dually with a flat deck and stake sides. Add receivers front and back for accessories; including a minimum 5 ton plug in winch ( that can also be used as a come along with a shackle on the spud. ) And while we're dreaming a lift platform and small crane (Hiab). It will also make a good plow truck all cities here have them with a sand and salt hopper/spreader on the back. The rest of the year they use them in all departments for light hauling; from road maintenance ( potholes and sidewalks) to landscaping with modules that sit on the deck. the old guy Bert

As Joe dirt said, if you have 3/4 of a mile to plow get a truck and plow. But if its 1/2 mile or less of road and clearing drives around the property its tractor time. More versatile, more attachments, more uses. Even a subcompact tractor like the Kubota BX-80 allows you to have a 60" steel harden front blade or an actual snow blower PTO driven on the front or a rear blade. This doesn't count the other 100 things you can do with a tractor on a homestead. I bought one 5 years ago and its a life saver. Based on the little I know about your property, get the tractor.

You already have what you need......just get the bar chains that cover both wheels for you skid steer and put four way blade on it. He will find out soon that that truck will not cut it. I started plowing more then 25 years ago with a 7 horse walk behind rotary. I would plow 18 hours straight to open up the cabin tract road. I picked up a JD MC 10 years ago and cut my plowing time way down. Now we have a guy in the tract with a skid steer with the accessory tracks and rotary blower so I only have to plow when he does not have it done or the berms need to be pushed over the hillside.

The advantage of the truck is 3 Fold, if you need to make a run to town you can, if road needs plowing then you will have twice the plow OUT then BACK ? To be honest it's down to your budget ? and how much snow you get ? and what traction you have ? I think that using a truck there is a lot of strain? where as a back ho/ digger has the tork and weight and best its a multi purpose tool. Ha ja makes ja choice hey. Just love that winter wonderland.
@bootsontheground97446 жыл бұрын
Skid steer with snow plow. If you use one, you will never want to use a pickup ever again. The only real down side is having to load it up to travel any distance. The up side, you can dance!!! Many years experience plowing with trucks talking here. Snow plows are hard on any truck regardless of make, model, or size. The loader doesn't care! As far as a tractor is concerned, it won't be as efficient clearing snow, but may be a better fit for some folks.

Tractor is the best option if you can afford it. More versatile, you can stack snow higher, more power to push bigger drifts. However if you have a truck that can hold a plow already its definitely cheaper, and more than capable.

Plow truck is the way to go over the tractor especially when it is cold out. Tractor takes to long to warm up the hydraulics and the bucket does not move much snow. You will have to plow often with that light weight plow. Make sure you have shoes on the plow.

Fisher! Traditional 8 or 9 ft. Trip edge vs full blade trip is nice. Plus Fisher still has 1973 to 1986 (1991 carry over) plow mounts. A guy in pa actually makes them. Fisher is very high quality. If you aren't plowing commercially mayby you can find a cheaper brand..

trucks are not made for plowing, every year its a lot of new front end parts, now I keep an old truck as a yard truck that don't go on the road any more so I don't have to keep the front end up, for the hyw, its just an old beater to plow my 1800 ft. drive way, but for get about the truck plow when them 5 and 7 foot storms hit, trucks not going to move
@augustreil6 жыл бұрын
They may not be, but there sure are a lot of trucks with plows on them !
@arnoldromppai53956 жыл бұрын
august5 there sure are, I would never put a plow on a new truck, again they stretch the box and box bolts, brake frames, and al lot more damage just doing your own, every year was 15 to 1800$ just in parts and a wheel alignment every spring now I just keep an old off road beater for clean up of smaller parts
@mattlane22826 жыл бұрын
Um those sure as hell were, you can beat the fuck out of those square bodies and they just keep going and going and going. Idk what junk you were using OR how incorrectly you were using it if you were doing 1800 a year in parts. I spend more washing the truck and on oil changes than anything else.

Truck = easy to work on, looses no value, limited on attachments Tractor = complicated, expensive, decreases value, creme de crop attachments Skidsters = expensive, can be complex, limited on attachments, strong value, easy to use Go truck for plowing, they're cheaper, you spend less on the loss than what you do in annual maintenance for the other 2, but if you want to show off the "big one" you have, bobcat skidster on tracks be about 90k but it'll do whatever you want in the snow.
