Not owning either of these I’d opt for the Kalita. I alternate between espresso and drip coffee at home, and I really like the idea of a flat bottom filter to provide a more uniform extraction. Not sure if there’s any truth to that, obviously the V60, Chemex, etc. are hugely popular for a reason. Another awesome video, man! Thanks for the great content.

I tend to recommend the v60 for a first brewer, but that’s largely to overcome cost concerns. As much as I love to experiment with all kinds of tools and techniques, it’s hard to deny that someone getting started could do worse than paying $8 or less for their first piece of hardware, especially since it can still be very useful as they grow into the hobby.

I went through this dilemma years ago as I was being introduced to specialty coffee, I was just starting uni and buying multiple brewing methods to power what would become an emphatic addiction was (and still is) a far fetched dream but I would like to add to this great video that a great approach to making this decision is to try them all at a local specialty coffee shop over a given (preferably prolonged) period of time not only will you become more familiar with the different profiles each can bring but also over different beans so only you understand what is that you like and crave, for me I chose the Chemex as my first brewer, I loved (and still do) how clean, crisp and vibrant it made some exotic [mostly] natural beans taste while also looking absolutely stunning.

Love my Kalita. It’s been about 10 years I’ve put on the stainless steel. I modded mine recently by drilling each the holes 1mm wider, and it brews even better! As I understand it, the other materials (glass and ceramic) drain considerably faster than the stock stainless, so maybe I’ve just modded it to be more like its sibling’s.

I just got my origami yesterday and I couldn't be more happy - the fact that I was able to brew a gold cup on the first try, with a new gesha from Black and White, with the Wave/Stagg filter in the Origami, has me over the moon. I've been struggling for months with my v60. I have brought my temps down to 200F from 205F, and I let my water drain almost fully on each pour, no more bitter coffees. I can't wait to use my Origami tomorrow. And I own 3 cup Chemex, Aeropress, Ceramic V60, stagg as well.

You left out my favorite dripper. It's not trendy, it's old, and it makes great coffee. I'm talking about the grandmother of all pour over drippers, the humble Melitta cone. Especially for someone just getting started in pour over coffee, the Melitta is perfect. You can buy it, and the filters, almost everywhere. It's cheap (the cone alone is under $5.00 USD). Don't ignore the economy ... the less you spend on a dripper, the more you can spend on your grinder and beans - a $5 dripper and a Baratza Encore will make far better coffee than an Origami and a blade grinder. Does the Melitta make The World's Best Coffee? Probably not, but that's not what the newbie is looking for. They want something much better than the swill they're currently drinking, but aren't ready to go down the rabbit hole of superb coffee, not just yet. The jump between K-cups and a Melitta is huge. Sometimes we forget that most people aren't as into coffee as we are. They want *good*, but don't want the effort of "the best". If I was recommending a setup to a friend, I'd tell them to get the Melitta, a refurbished Encore, and the best beans they can afford. BTW, I'm a user experience developer. My job is figuring out what the typical person wants, and how to provide that: no less, no more. My suggestion is based on the average K-cup and Starbucks drinker making their first move up - not the person who already loves excellent coffee. For someone like Kyle, or most of his subscribers, I'd recommend something entirely different.

Hey thanks for this comment! I Appreciate the thoughts here. no disrespect to the melitta, tho I’m not sure I follow your argument? Maybe you could clarify? Is it a matter of value? Or are you suggesting the melitta is easier to use? If it’s value, you can find plastic V60’s for $10-12. Even the ceramic is 25-35.
@lizcademy4809
@lizcademy4809 3 жыл бұрын
I was rambling a bit, wasn't I. My main argument is that, for the person just getting started with great coffee, the grinder is much more important than the dripper. Any dripper will work with a good grinder, but a poor grinder won't be helped by even the best dripper. The Melitta is accessible and low cost. Paired with a good burr grinder, it will make very good coffee.

Just a health point: recent studies have come out saying that coffee made with a paper filter is better for your cholesterol profile. The paper filters remove some elements that are harmful to your cholesterol numbers, adding to the LDL portion. We want the HDL numbers to be higher, the LDL to be lower. Happy coffee drinking!

This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact kzbin.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

@lihenow
@lihenow 3 жыл бұрын
@@zxdc5893 I think V60 is very versatile. You can grind coarser to get a light coffee with pronounced notes and flavor clarity (use method like 4:6 or April V60), or you can grind finer to get a sweeter coffee (use method like Matt Perger). With Kalita, because flow rate is limited, most time you get a sweet dominated and rounded coffee, with less flavor clarity. I mostly drink light roast coffee.

I have been almost all V60 since I started 3 years ago. Wanted to focus on one brewer and always loved V60 results from cafes that used it. Last year I purchased the 155 Kalita in Ceramic. I prefer the V60 but do still use the Kalita on occasion. I just ordered a Chemex, as it was always my absolute favorite at cafes during brew method classes. Look forward to learning and dialing in on the Chemex. Lastly, I just purchased a Comandante C40 MK4 hand grinder. I was previously using a Breville Smart Grinder Pro conical burr grinder. In just 1 week I realize that I am getting a far superior extraction with the Comandante. So, to those out there getting started, I would stress that grinder selection may be the most important variable to lock down. Happy brewing!

Question regarding grinders: I’m currently using my Breville Barista Express and while it’s been good as my first espresso machine, I’m looking to upgrade (well actually having a house built and using that as an excuse to buy everything new....lol). I’m going to go with the Lelit Mara X PL62X Heat Exchange Espresso Machine and will need a grinder. Now I don’t typically do matchy-matchy but for some reason I want to keep the brand consistent in this case so I’m thinking about getting the Lelit PLO44MM Fred Stepless Doserless Grinder. I think it’s beautiful to look at and would match perfectly with the simplicity and design of the Mara X. Now with ALLLLLLLLL that being said....lol....do you think that’s a good entry level grinder that would enable the Mara X to pull great shots of espresso? Love your channel and content Bro....keep up the great work! 👍🏼 -Chris

I have not used the Origami. I learned to do pourovers on the V60 before the Wave came out and use a 15:1 ratio to make a 12 oz cup. The V60 is very grind dependent and you need to adjust the grind for different types of beans.and am wondering if the Origami is the same due to the large hole. I noticed that it appears that both the Origami and the V60 are ceramic and you chose the SS 185 Wave. SS vs Ceramic will definitely result in a taste difference one not better than the other just different. Another thing is that the best Wave to use for a single cup is the 155 although it takes more technique. I recently purchased a Phin Filter which I'm sure you know is how the Vietnamese brew coffee. I do not use anything other than coffee and water in it and prefer my coffee black. For my palate this is the best although it's definitely more of a hassle. There's no paper to taint (for lack of a better word) the taste. I don't know if they make ceramic Phin filters but I'm sure someone probably does. Might have to get an Origami for my pourover dripper collection. I think I have at least 7 different ones.

Out of all my dripper (which isn't that many), my go-to has always been Timemore B75. It gives me the best balanced cup and it has a very fast draw down. Granted, I felt that my preference is towards the taste of flat-bottom brewer. I haven't tried origami (planning to) but i heard Kalita Wave is prone to stalling so i'm rather avoiding it.

Uhh Hario V60 switch, like a Clever dripper, with a V60. Looks good easy to use and clean. Origami is great, but too darn fragile to use daily, and I have the wooden stand so it makes me not want to use it, takes forever to wait for it to cool down carefully wash it, and clean it. Kalita Wave is good for some coffee, but not all, and filters are considerably costlier. I been trying out the Timemore Crystal Eye, bought it cheap to hit free shipping, pretty good actually, I like the design, very different, it doesn't push the filter out and a lot less fragile, very thick all things considered, and looks flashy.

Origami, it’s way more versatile than the others. I use Kalita filters using Coffee with April’s brew recipe or I use Chemex filters with a higher 20g of coffee to 300g of water if I want a different flavor or a bigger cup. On top of that the Origami looks nicer on the bar. I get way nicer cups with the Origami than my Chemex or my Kalita and most definitely my Melitta which was a V60 like brewers but with a smaller single hole.

If you have money, I would suggest getting a hario switch. You got the best of two worlds at the same time. Else, if you just started with specialty coffee, get yourself a french press. It's very hard to fucked up with a french press. You'll get consistent good tasting coffee with it.

As a novice to good quality coffee drinking and used to drinking coffee like Sumatra, Colombian or Brazilian from basic store brands Peets, Seattle's Best, etc via basic drip machine; which would you recommend as a first pour over to use and gain better appreciation for coffee?

Call me a traditionalist, but coming from years of French Press and Aero Press, I’m not terribly fond of my coffee tasting like tea 😂😂 Happy I got the Kalita Wave.

Would you say your cups are better with the Wave VS the aeropress? I'm trying to choose a pour over method and while I want to taste the subtle tasting notes on the bag I'm not particularly fond of "thin" textured cups.
@j.r.1030
@j.r.1030 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffburling7224 To be honest, it might not be the best comparison. You’ll be able to extract far more nuances and flavor with the wave. And its very easy to beef up the results (dose, grind size, etc). There are good recipes for the aero press that can get you great flavors, but I don’t think any could compare to the wave in that regard. However, what you get with the aero press is basically unlimited diversity and what you can do with it. Basic brew, more subtlety-geared recipes, being able to make very concentrated coffees, vary texture with paper or metal filters, and even faux espresso (which in a milk drink is perfectly tasty). I’m sure there are cold brew recipes out there too. AND it’s portable and easy to clean. So if it’s your first brewer I would say go aero press. It’s truly the best all-arounder/desert island brewer. But if you are specifically wanting to just taste flavor profiles, get the wave.

Good idea. In my experience I think Kalita accentuates sweetness better. I also find it more forgiving on pour technique, and easier to avoid bitter flavors. This is compared to V60.

I like the Kalita the best, but I find it so hard to get a consistent cup out of it. When it’s good it’s the best pour over coffee I’ve ever had, but sometimes it just comes out under or over extracted despite the same process being followed. Need more practice I guess. Clever dripper is the best for solid consistency in a pour over style brewer in my experience, but my daily driver is always the Aeropress.
@EusebiusAT
@EusebiusAT Жыл бұрын
that's sort of funny, because I gennerally find the Kalita to be a more forgiving brewer because of it's flat bottom, steep edge, and slower drip rate.
@OrinLaursen

Are you using the stock stainless steel? I’d look into putting some sort of screen in the bottom so the paper doesn’t accidentally clog one of the holes during brews! Also I should note that the glass and ceramic versions apparently drain much faster and are less prone to stalling. I got fed up with walking on eggshells (after 9+years brewing on it haha), and just drilled each hole 1mm wider. It’s been much easier to control the brew time, and thus dial-in ever since!

I prefer my V60 with a reusable hemp filter. I tried the hemp filter in the Origami, but it wasn't to my preference. I've yet to find a paper filter that I like. I also like the Cafellissimo which requires zero filter.

I don’t think I will ever use my kalita after getting my origami (unless Im traveling and don’t want to break it). I’m curious how the Kalita 155 compares to the origami small. Does the having a more narrow funnel on the flat bottom have an affect on taste? I’ve also been using a collapsible brass funnel for my flat bottom filters that works really well.
@KyleRowsell
@KyleRowsell 3 жыл бұрын
It won’t have a drastic effect on taste, but rather flow rate as the sidewalls are slightly steeper. This can result in different taste, but the narrow borrow wouldn’t be the reason.
