While not a direct application rust preventative and certainly not one to be used in the exposed elements I’ve found reusable gun safe desiccant canisters or even the smaller packets wrapped in breathable membranes similar to tyvek on buildings help a lot for anything that is covered. With both you can refresh their moisture trapping ability by placing them out in the sun on a hot dry day or in a toaster oven on low heat. They have made a world of difference in preventing rust from creeping on to the tools in my tool box and might be worth considering to include with equipment under long term storage with a tarp. I live in Seattle so my unconditioned garage has become my proving ground for my quest to find the ultimate preventative. Interestingly enough the single biggest improvement came when I prepped the concrete floor for 3 months and applied an industrial grade epoxy floor coat (3 months prep because the 900sqft garage had been used as a mechanics garage for the last 50 years and oil intrusion forced me to rent a walk behind surface grinder after multiple attempts with hot pressure washing & industrial degreasers failed) Rust mitigation will always be an integral topic for just about anyone who cares about their stuff. Great video and appreciate the honest and careful assessments you provided.

Dupont Molykote metal protector plus. It’s wax based fluid in a petroleum distillate solvent. Not sure anything works long term outdoors. Some products seem to trap moisture and create even more rust. Road salt and harsh winters are difficult to defend against. Washing , waxing and keeping your car indoors is the only way in those conditions. Trapped moisture is the enemy. There isn’t much that can be done for outdoor metal. Hot dipped galvanized or paint are good options. Hot dipping is very expensive but works best.

When you start season 2 I hope you apply the rust inhibitor to all sides and edges thoroughly. Also that all pieces of steel are identical bare steel. I guess one more suggestion is that you think long and hard about the list of products you'll be testing and that they are products you think will perform well. Looking forward to it!

Great series of vides! However, your "confession" about the last two metal pieces introduced some havoc to my own ranking... In the second round I would like to see XCP Rust Blocker, XCP Rust Blocker Clear Coat, Jenolite Rust Shield, Jenolite Waxoil Spray and DINITROL 81. These are the ones, along with CRC SP-400, which I tested and would like to see how they compare with the rest.

i was going to make a homebrew combining mineral turpentine, mineral oil and anhydrous lanolin. I have been pleased with the Inox MX3 spray and thought it would be good to be able to vary the mixtures for different applications. The same company makes a heavier duty spray called Lanox MX4 which has more lanolin in it and hence provides a thicker coating

Great videos and information that you take the time to do them- that is amazing! I don't know if it's been brought up but something you could try with all them rusty plates is Evap-o-rust which I know works, but they also market a water based rust inhibitor to spray on right after rinsing to prevent rust for up to a year til you're ready to paint. It washes off with water so it would only be good for an inside test

Getting interested in your experiment since I am working on my car and trying to find out the best way to protect screws from rusting. Could you try a bunch of other rust inhibitor? My ideas would be: - cold galvanization using a spray of zinc. My research on Internet seems to show that lot of people are getting long lasting protection with it. - one of those inhibitor combined with epoxy. In an environnement without any physical impact, it should last way longer than others. For my specific use case, it would be awesome that for each piece you could use half of the metal piece to simulate gravel impact from time to time. I would also love to spray some salted water to simulate driving in winter. Thank you for your experiment !

Hey man, I just found your channel in my feed. Watched all your rust videos and I'm definitely subscribing. I recommend that you try a rust converter like Ospho. You could use your control from this test if you wanted, since the part needs to have rust for it to work. I use ospho on my outdoor welding table. It has worked great in preserving the material without leaving weird films or flamable coatings. What I use for parts I plan to store long term is just sticky red marine grade grease. Put on a glove. Slather it on. No rust for years. Awesome vids man. Excited to see where you take this.
@cherigriffith724

I Ospho'd my crab cookers when I cleaned them up, which they probably would not endorsed doing. It has not completely kept the rust at a bay (so OR coast) but they have not caught on fire😅
@Alex9501950
@Alex9501950 11 ай бұрын
@cherigriffith724 yeah, direct exposure to salt water is probably the worst case scenario. If they rust I'd recommend wiping off any of the loose rust and hitting it with more ospho. Eventually you end up a super robust layer. My outdoor welding table and vice get treated every year and at this point you hardly see any rust even after a year outside in the pacific north west.

@@StuartdeHaro I might have, but do not know for sure. I believe I mentioned to you once upon a time about keeping my mill vise off center to even out the wear on the lead screw. Maybe I mentioned it at that point. (That also leaves room for an indexer or rotary table by the way)

Great update. Ill continue to use the cheapest thing available for indoors based off of this test. Im rethinking my summer rust inhibitor plan for my cars though. I would be very interested in the outdoor test, but with some shade. Im guessing that the sun is baking off most of the coati gs. I would like to see used motor oil in the next test. It does great in hard to reach spots in my experience, but who kows about a flat surface. Finally, another teavher i know tells dad jokes all the time. He said he must because though he has no children, he and his wife are really practicing for it. Thats not what he meant, but his students went a different direction...
