Yes, however you will need the sugarcane to trigger the observer update as bamboo wont. I would suggest just having the sugarcane in front of the observers and the rest of the farm be bamboo.

It can save the stress of breaking flying machines, its also fairly easy to expand

I usually put observers in the 2nd block up so that I get more cane for every time the pistons activate

You might get more per activation, but over time you would get less sugarcane.

Is the ice there neccessary for the first farm, since atm i have no access to ice

Yes you can however some items might get stuck I would suggest instead not including the part of the farm after the ice and instead expand to the side I've made an imgur album with images to help you. imgur.com/a/W901oGU Hope this helps.

From my understanding of bedrock the piston based farms will work. unfortunately i don't have the new launcher so cant play bedrock at the moment.

I just tried this on the current version of bedrock on xbox and it does not work the water placed in the middle destroys all the sugar cane
