Dunlop has a K591 which is approved for Sportsters. Derived from lines of racing tires and now what I think is a substantial upgrade over stockers at least for my 1200 iron. Holy moly what an upgrade!!! Good grip on road under about any condition, quiet and smooth and balanced out with little weight. OEM tires only average, but these are amazing. They put the “sport” back into sportster. They are midrange priced due to existing engineering. Keep in mind there are only sizing for sportsters and only in 5-6 sizes in lineup.

Here Is A Sportster Tip .... when your out on the road, wondering if your tires need to be changed; reach in your pocket, and grab a quarter, ( or get a quarter, or borrow a quarter ) then, you insert the edge of the quarter into the tread where it is low ... line up the two Ls, in "quarter doLLar" if you can see the bottoms of the Ls, it is time to change your tire.

I put 50,000 miles on my Roadster between July 2005 and November 2008. Since then, only 32,000 miles. My OEM rear tire lasted 15,000 miles and the reason I replaced it was because it was becoming "squared off" and was beginning to affect handling in curves. The front tire lasted 25,000 miles and was replaced for the same reason as the rear. But once I took a job that didn't involve field service my mileage plummeted. Stop and go riding cut tire life down to 4,000 miles on the rear and 8,000 for the front. OEM tires are Dunlops. Tire life went down yet again when Elrama Power Station closed (12 miles away, mostly flat terrain, 8 red lights) and I transferred to Cheswick Power Station (22 miles away, 10 miles highway, 12 miles crossing the city of Pittsburgh). Dealers prefer to fit OEM tires because of liability. Smaller shops will cater to enthusiasts who do the research and want tires that better suit their riding style. The better shops know what works and will make recommendations.

Same bike, I’m on my fifth set of scorpion trail 2. Good tires at breaking and cornering, progressive at the limit, good on the rain and in the cold too. I get about 5500 miles from the rear one, and about 7000 for the front. I consider that good as I almost only ride twisty roads, rather aggressively. I heard there is a third iteration now, but couldn’t find them last time I replaced my tires.

I switched to Metzeler ME888 Marathon Ultras. For about 700 miles, it felt like riding on ice. It was 1000 miles before the nubs in the middle wore off (Shinkos lasted 50 or so)! At 1100 they started to feel right. They're great tires now, but damn that break in is sketch. People say they get 20K to 25K on their Glides with ME888s, if that's true then I might get 30K to 40K! Let me go off-topic with a topic important to motorcycle riders: have you encountered locked doors at fast-food restaurants? This disturbing trend creates a huge obstacle if you're hypoglycemic and have to eat on schedule because they won't sell you food at the drive-through window if you walk up. Locking the doors also eliminates restroom access. Going to a place like Denny's or Bob Evans often isn't an option because compared to fast food joints they're few and far between.
