Thanks for throwing in the Burly Stiletto shocks. I had a shop guy tell me they were complete garbage and I should go Progressive instead. This shows it's more about what you want out of your ride, not the brand. Definitely know what shocks I'm getting! Awesome video guys!!

I put a set of roadking "air ride" shocks on my '07 Nightster, worked pretty well for the money. Only gave $100 for them. I'm sure most of these aftermarket options would work better, but just another idea for you sportster owners out there.

Lemmy, I just purchased the new 2016 HD Roadster 1200, and I love it. All your videos are great and I'm excited about your HD Sportster series as it is helping decide on what parts and mods I'm going to buy from RevZilla. The product reviews are great but you do an even better job going through the installation for these parts. It's like you're my mechanic and my BFF helping me out wrenching on these parts. You're doing an amazing service to me and the biker community. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to get my order in.

Lemmy, I see you've reviewed rear suspension exclusively in this video. Us guys with older sportys don't have the best set of front forks. I think HD only updated the sportster suspension in 2014. The older suspension tends to bottom on slightly uneven asphalt and dives when you brake very hard. It would be great to have a review video on some front fork options. I've been researching this recently and I've found the Ohlins NIX22, KTech Tracker IDS, Progressive Suspension Full Cartridge Kit and the Race Tech Cartridge Emulator. Maybe we can have a part 2 to this suspension mod series...

Having just picked up a 2016 1200 Custom, I've watched this series a few times. As someone else mentioned, what about the front suspension? Having raised the rear and with you being of substantial girth, you would think you should add stiffer springs up front to balance out the change you made to the rear. You can see in the vids how compressed the front is even just riding normally around town. A suggestion on what to do with the front would have been nice.

It's a matter of taste. I have my 883 Iron slammed almost all the way down, and installed Builtwell Chump handlebars, 'cause I screwed up my sholder and it's painful to lean forward on handlebars. The slight rise of the bars allowed the clearance to install the mirrors below the bars. It gives gives you real sport bike lines, without the jacked up rear end, and the uncomfortable "handstand" ride.

Not only does the bronze trim let people know its not stock, the big space space between the tire and the fender do the same. In my opinion, you get an Iron cause its low. Looks like your building the new Roadster 1200. If you dont already have an Iron, and you want these same upgrades, the Harley Roadster might be for you. The Roadster already has more horsepower, no need for upgraded exhaust system and fuel controller. It already has more ground clearance and comes with a pillion seat and pegs. Of coarse if you want a better sound you could get slip ons for less than the whole system. The suspension is better all around and comes with dual front disks. Lemmy, I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks

I’m 5’5 162 lbs. I want some 10.5 shocks and every review I see people tend to go with longer shocks because they’re taller than me and much heavier. I’m assuming weight matters especially w short shocks. So my question is, with me being 162 lbs will the ride still be as rough?

Hello, Would the 970's deal with a little bit of off roading mixed with highway rides? what do you suggest? What kind of custom suspension should we get for Indian roads for touring? Considering we might need a little more ground clearance and not feel every bump on the road as we do with the stock shocks on our roads.

Great Video! I have a 2017 Iron. I want to upgrade the shocks to increase ground clearance, but I also want to make sure the seat still sits lower than the handlebars. Will the 14" Legend Revo A's accomplish this or will I also need to change the front? What about the Progressive 970s? They are about the same price, but your mention of the "spacer" issue is making me a bit nervous to install...What do you think?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
The 14" Legends will definitely give you a lot of ground clearance while keeping the seat below the handlebars. We don't have anything to raise the front, but if you want some quicker steering, then you don't need to raise the front anyway. They're an easy install, so you shouldn't have to worry about spacers. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/legend-suspension-revo-a-coil-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2017

Lemmy, I definitely appreciate some of those mods but i really need something that makes the bike LEAN in the bends! We're talking 40 degree lean angle here! Higher and less bulky footpegs, rearsets and an exhaust like the bassani radial sweepers.... What do you think? What else do you suggest along those lines? Cheers

Be careful, as the Radial Sweepers may not work with rearsets. Instead, consider the Roland Sands Slant 2-Into-1 or Vance & Hines Upsweep 2-Into-1, Progressive 413 Shocks, and Roland Sands Rearsets (which include slimmer pegs). -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/roland-sands-slant-2-into-1-exhaust-for-harley-sportster-2014-2016) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/vance-hines-upsweep-2-into-1-exhaust-for-harley) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-413-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/roland-sands-rearsets-for-harley-sportster)

Late to the conversation but I'm wondering if the increased shock length also increased cornering prowess. I'm looking at an XL1200T model and that seems to be the biggest complaint- lack of cornering clearance. If shocks could fix that, it might make my decision easier.

Longer shocks offer more cornering clearance, as well as adjusting the trail up front meaning the bike is happier to turn in compared to a lower rear shock. -Zack

Hey man.. Thanks for all info. I hve a 48 2016..I am in India. I like riding long. Sometimes with a pillion. But on a long ride, my tailbone hurts and my ass hurts. It numbs out and hence I need to get down after couple of hours. Is it the seat? I hate the bumps too. What is the suspension I should go for?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
Changing the seat will allow you to ride comfortably for longer, and upgrading the suspension will help with the bumps. For a more comfortable two-up seat, I recommend the Danny Gray TourIST. For suspension, consider the good/better/even better/best Progressive 412, 430, 444, or 970 rear shocks. Stock rear shock length is 11". You should only need standard duty springs. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/danny-gray-tourist-2-up-seat-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-412-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2016 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-430-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-444-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015

Hello Lemmy. Great informative video. I am already a fan. Needed some advice though. I live in India and have a 2012 model Iron 883N Sportster. The ground clearance and suspension suck, especially with uneven roads here. I was looking for an improved ground clearance of 140 mm approx. Will the Progressive 412 13" Heavy Duty be a good replacement ? Do I need to change the front fork springs as well ? Kindly advice.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
Heavy Duty shocks are only necessary if you ride the bike at or near the OEM maximum load rating over 50% of the time, so you probably don't need the heavy duty shocks. I recommend the standard duty 13" shocks for the rear. For the front, you can keep the stock height but could benefit from Progressive Fork Springs or a Progressive Monotube Fork Cartridge Kit. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-412-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2016 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-fork-springs-for-harley-sportster-street-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-monotube-fork-cartridge-kit-for-harley-sportster-2007-2015

I should have said they don't fit the stock 2016 Iron. So if you want them to fit, you may need to run an aftermarket exhaust that eliminates the stock exhaust bracket. You also may need to adjust the clearance of the rear brake rod and master cylinder assembly. We probably won't be able to make a video just for that modification (Lemmy costs more than you might think!), and I haven't found a different video for it either. If you don't feel confident, I'd reach out to one of the Sportster forums out there. -DrewZilla

@RevZilla
@RevZilla 5 жыл бұрын
It won't affect the rear too much, but it'll certainly affect the front! It's gonna be a lot harder to maneuver the bike at slow speeds. With the longer front, you want to keep the rear stock length or shorter (definitely not longer). You will want an inch longer kickstand though. -DrewZilla

Will a 12" shock make a big difference in ride height and comfort on my 2012 iron? I don't want to go too tall and ruin the lines of my bike.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
A 12" shock would be a good length. It won't ruin the lines. Progressive 444 and 970 shocks would be my recommendations for better and best ride quality. -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-444-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015)

I HAVE A 1996 SPORTSTER XLH AND I"M WANTING TO PUT A WIDE GLIDE FRONT END ON IT AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD RECOMEND

As long as you can confirm that the steering neck diameter matches between your frame and the wide glide front end, then you can do the swap. -DrewZilla

when installing taller shocks like that, is it necessary to adjust belt tension?
@RevZilla

Question: I've been wanting 15in shocks on my 17 sportster 48 but every website says they don't fit my bike but this video uses 15 in burley stiletto shocks. Will those shocks fit my bike
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 3 жыл бұрын
If you go to 15" shocks on your bike you need to convert to chain and also get a chain slider so it does not hit the swingarm. I would suggest checking out www.trackerdie.com for everything you would need for the conversion. -Zack

We do not because TBH it's not that popular a way to go. You may find some videos from the gang over at Trackerdie, though! -Zack

Is the turning clearance on that tbr exhaust as bad as they say?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
With the stock height, it's definitely an issue, but we're sticking with the longer shocks, so you have to lean the bike over farther to touch the exhaust. Lemmy likes to lean it pretty far, so he can still scrape the exhaust with really aggressive turning. -DrewZilla

I just cannot understand why HD gimps your US Sportsters with the low shocks. My HDI spec 2016 (UK) model Iron came standard with the 13.5 inch stock Showas, and they are actually really good, much better than I expected... I have only scraped the pegs once, and that was on a mini roundabout... Come on Harley, I'm sure your home market customers love corners too
