#dramaguete #dumaguete #expats
Planning our nationwide Philippines tour and considering Dumaguete for expat living and entrepreneurial projects. The latest drama with local vloggers there raises the question... Are expats generally well behaved, and does it change over time as they become more confident in their Philippines environment? Do expats wish well upon each other, or is it a game of egos?
Are we all just seeking an escape from our environments that we can't change? Is that what we are doing.... how about you?
When moving abroad do you find comfort in similar company and culture, or do you avoid your own kind so that you can preserve your own unique Foreigner experience with the locals?
There a few videos out there that describe how the local girls are different because they are so accustomed to Foreigners that they don't see them as unique or special, unlike other regions in the Philippines. A community of expats could be a good thing if they are supportive and acting responsibily within the community, but what if there are a few bad eggs... who polices it, maybe the only way is for the Expats to confont each other.... interesting dynamic, anyone have any first hand experience with it... or should we skip it all together and just go off the beaten path instead of the bar scene.

It's not just Dumaguete where drama thrives. Anywhere there are same/like personalities you will find drama. It becomes really visible when social media is introduced. I choose being semi reclusive. My true friends who shun drama can be counted on one hand and I like it that way.

Hiya Clay, yeah good point, the peaceful expats likely just fade in unnoticed... but I feel like the profile of a lifestyle-minded expat or retiree abroad could be slightly different... depends for their reasons for being in the country for sure, not all are likeminded which is normal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

I’ve visited Duma many times as I love the boulevard, started in 2005 when there were few foreigners there, nowadays too many for me so avoid ground zero etc and pretend to be French if necessary
@FilipinaAustralian

Haha French, ooo lala the girls would like that. We'll have to visit the boardwark for ourselves. For sure the number street walking vloggers has increased everywhere so that probably takes away from the chill live in the moment experience also. Thanks Sentinel, appreciate your input here.

Dumaguete City, the "City of Gentle People," was once called one of the Retirement Havens of the World by Forbes magazine. It is a small city. But it has the mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and sea so very accessible to the city. It has its quaint coffee shops, two malls, and nightlife. It's a university town with many colleges in such a small area. It has a very cool clime in the Valencia area in the mountains, aside from its other towns on the other mountain parts or beaches, good for snorkeling & diving. It is not bustling like Cebu and/or Metro Manila. Many locals speak good, conversational English. ... So it attracts foreigners. These foreigners like it there 'cause accommodations and food are cheap. But, then, these foreigners become so at home that they feel free to vlog each other. And then these vloggers put their personal interests/comments onto each other ..... hence, "Dramaguete." - a resident of Sibulan (a town right next to Dumaguete City).

Oh great info from a local, thank you very much! That's what we see on paper too, the benefits, university town, educated people, natural beauty, proximity to diving spots etc. Honestly, it's a priviledge to be granted access to such a country, and the dark side is that you probably wouldn't want to get on anyones bad side as who knows what the implications are... but anyway appreciate you sharing. cheers.

Years back, Dumaguete was considered the best place to retire to by an international and reputable magazine. That's the start of expats flocking to the city/area. Duma is really beautiful and expats are helping the local economy. There are bad eggs of course but in general, they're okay.

We're sure it's a nice place, very possibly we'll drop by there in June. Really can't imagine that there is anyone super bad, but I think something happens when everyone get's a bit stir crazy staying in one spot... personally moving to different cities throughout life has been a very refreshing experience.

Actually.... in theory there may maybe technically criminal factors involved. 1. There are ACTUALLY laws in ph about filming othets without their consent. BUT as most things, as long as behave... almost no filipinos will make enough fuzz about that. Be nice, and you almost always gets greeted with smiles and good energy in the Philippines:) 2. Fighting is a criminal matter. Unless both agreed to it. Then i think there is allowed under certain paragraphs. If both did not agree to the fight? Then it is a criminal matter. And expats can get blacklisted (if the case gets targeted by the government to set an example). Philippines the country with laws, but where most laws are not enforced. But if you piss of the wrong people or make yourself into an example etc... the Philippines can decide to enforce the laws... hard... on you specificly. So therefor expats should be respectful. 3. According to some The Critter-dude did trick some into shady buisness ideas, where their money get lost. But unkniwn how much truth into those stories. 4. Spreading damaging misinformation CAN be a criminal case in the Philippines. "Saving face" is such a big thing in the Philippines. 5. The friend of the Critter-guy had allegedly been harashing the other guy (whom punched the Critter-guy friend) for many months. Harashment could also lead to criminal case in the Philippines. But seldom enforced. And communities tries to solve internally. But if brought to surface... then it can escelate. Especially if the purpetrayer is expat while the target is a local. But again.. seems like most of these expats that cant behave abroad are often from usa. (I guess americans and chinese are competing for being the worst expats in the world;)

Interesting summary thanks for detailing it here! TBH we just heard of the event and didn't care for the details assuming it was all much about nothing and pretty much their own business to sort out... but yeah hopefully people can be aware of the implications... saving face with the locals, complying with laws etc. These seem like good guys doing normally good things and focused on helping others. You seem really well informed on the subtle nuances of expat life in PH, thanks for sharing your insights, really appreciate it. Maybe we'll drop in to see what the Dumaguete scene is like in a few months ijn our own experience, cheers Scott & Ella

Makes sense, actually we enjoy all their content. For sure there is a level of influence that they would have over people that are on the fence about making it their life choice to retire in the Philppines. Nothing wrong with that, but certainly new arrivals are going to have a different experience than someone that is starting off in more remote areas. Still, just glad that expats are still welcome by locals... for all the reasons you can imagine. Bad behaviour can turn the tides, like in Bali, and maybe some parts of Thailand.

Dumaguete is a great place why run the place down because of misbehavior by a few, there's many idiots where l live in Australia to so what you going to think , when l spend time with my Asawa where we built a house at Amlan which is about 30 minutes from Dumaguete which we spend time. foreigners love Dumaguete but in fact its like a capital for a region North,South to places such as Valencia which is mountainous and colder. then you have many beaches with diving resorts Critter Hunter is one who has a dive resort and teaches divers etc, then you can go any where,to the Island of Bohol, or get the ferry to Cebu ,Dumaguete is central to all and actually misses most of the Typhoons. Dumaguete has a big University there to so say no more. When l go there l dont avoid but we mind our own business and dont mix with to many others. There are many good vloggers who avoid problems and are great people so as l said please dont place all in the same basket,

Nice to meet you Brien, thanks for your insightful comments here. We actually are going to consider this based on your input, countdown only 60 days or so. You've done a lot of things that we aspire to, house building etc, really appreciate feedback. It would be surreal to drop in to see Justin at CritterHunter, he seems almost famous.

Immigrants to America come offering productivity for their lifetime and future generations of their family I would think... Retirees to the Philippines, perhaps they are bringing their life savings and local spending.. but I doubt that it as much positive impact... hmmm hadn't really thought about before, but thanks for the topic idea, cheers.

Ah yes, there is definitely a difference in profile and movitations... expats vs immigrants vs cashed up retirees, vs just scraping by retirees. I wonder what the percentages are. Nice tip for a future video thanks!
