The Chagos Islands Dispute is perhaps one of the lesser known territorial issues in international politics. However, the question of the Chagos Archipelago - as the territory is also known - has gone all the way to the United Nations General Assembly and the International Court of Justice. As this video shows, it is a story that involves decolonisation, human rights abuses and international security.
Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries.
As the United Kingdom prepared to grant independence to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, it decided to detach the Chagos Islands in order to establish a joint military base with the United States on the island of Diego Garcia. As part of this, the inhabitants of the islands - which are now known as the British Indian Ocean Territory - were forcibly deported. Since then, Britain has faced numerous court cases over their right to return. Meanwhile, Mauritius has contested the way in which the Islands were originally removed form its control. In this video, I explore the background to the case and explain why, despite a call by the UN General Assembly for Britain to return the Chagos islands to Mauritius, this is unlikely to happen.
