What is the correct way to experience Vampire Bloodlines?

I haven't seen the whole video yet, but here are some comments from the creator of the Unofficial Patch. If you want to play the orginal game, just install the UP to get the memory and widescreen fixes and then start the game from vampire.exe! All the specific fixes will be ignored and you are playing 1.2 official. As for some of the changes that look as if they are arbitrary when watching this video, it all comes up to what you consider a bug. For example the different starting area of the tutorial was actually created for the patch by a fan who just couldn't live with the fact, that the back entrance of the theatre looks completely different in the tutorial compared to in the downtown hub. Or that Troika added a removable piece of the fence at the beachhouse on purpose, which makes no sense at all if you can just jump over it, so this clearly is a bug that you are exploiting. Or that you can break any elevator if you press the buttons while the doors are not closed yet. Or that the muzzle flashes in the tutorial are in the middle of the guns and the Sabbat is laughing with his mouth closed. Minor things like these ;)!

i'm bad at responding to comments and so missed this for a bit, sorry about that! and thanks for your answer on steam that was featured in the video i agree that a lot of the changes depends on what is considered to be a bug, glitch, etc. i think i could have expanded a bit more on "developer intentions" and whether or not they matter when trying to play a game as vanilla as possible. instead it turned more into a history of troika taking on bloodlines to make salary and how a patch seemed necessary from release. i could see a follow-up video on this focusing more on which changes are arbitrary vs. significant between available patches, especially given the context of the videos you're releasing about the plus patch history

With the beta launch of Nvidia's RTX Remix platform, some fans in their official Discord server began experimenting with modding VTMB (with unofficial patch)'s visuals to set the groundwork for 1.0 launch of RTX Remix and the future. An odd issue came up and someone decided to contact Wesp5 directly to see if he could help us to get it resolved, he responded immediately with a no, despite that he asked someone more familiar with the issue from his community to help us! Retrospectively thinking, I wonder how Tessera would've responded to that and if they would've given us the same courtesy.

The strangest thing about TPG to me is that they apparently added widescreen capability, but did not fix the aspect ratio, which is easily done by changing a single value in config.cfg (r_anamorphic). This may even be the cause of the graphical glitches on the top and bottom of the screen.

to my knowledge you can still do the xp glitch at the beginning with unofficial, you just change your "background" after filling in your dots.

correct, if you have histories enabled then you can still perform the exp glitch like 1.1 or 1.2 official. I believe that's why they removed histories in the first place

I think for a first play-through, just using the updated engine files from the unofficial patch is the best way to play the game. Makes the vanilla 1.2 game run on modern machines, and you won't see any egregious bugs (I can attest to this, in my recent play-through done like this I actually didn't notice a single one), while completely dodging any alterations made to the game by third parties. It's the game as Troika wanted people to play it. 1. Do a clean 1.2 install of the game. 2. Copy over only the vampire.exe file to a new empty directory. 3. Install the unofficial Basic patch in this new directory with the sole .exe in it. 4. Copy over the following files from this patch install directory to the folder with the real game (pasting files in their proper folder structure place): root folder: 6 .dll files + the updated vampire.exe one root\Bin subfolder: 5 .dll files root\Bin\loader: everything Unofficial_Patch\cfg: user.cfg Unofficial_Patch\cl_dlls: both .dll files Unofficial_Patch\dlls: the single vampire.dll file 5. Enjoy the game. Other application of patches or mods should be done on later play-throughs only imo, though while they freshen the experience, I think all of them lower the quality of the game

I'm currently using the clan quest mod which I suppose means I'm using the unofficial patch by default. But really, as long as the game works I really don't care. The building was changed in the tutorial so you can quickly see if the patch was actually functioning

Tessera, back when he made his stuff played on a lower res 4 by 3 monitor, or so to say the standard resolutions for the game. He unloaded everything not in view of his percieved smaller camera to save performance... Hence the visual glitches.

I recently fell through this rabbit hole trying to see what was actually the best way of playing VtMB, and after seeing a bunch of forum threads I am firmly on Wesp's camp. You cannot even use the patch on Win10 without doing some convoluted process, it's insane. It's even more insane when you consider that, while the unofficial patch is the basis for things like the clan quest mod, the biggest offering the true patch has is nude mods (that I am aware of). Honestly, I don't expect this to change any time soon, not only because Tessera is very opinionated but also because true patch's programmer (yea, tessera is the ideas guy afaik lol) left the project a long time ago.

It appears True Patch messed with camera angle limits to where the camera can cut in to ceilings etc. and thus make them act the same way they do if the player were to clip in to them. That seems like something that should have been easy to spot and remedy...

I see in a bunch of clips that you have an uncapped frame rate....how you do that? I know there's some command to turn off vsync, but it's never worked for me

the frame limit is basically 300 so it's switching max_fps between 60 and 300 with a bind

I love the Idea of the True Patch, but Tess really turns me off with their attitude. Along with everything in this video, when Windows 10 came out and the patch didn't work, they basically told the posters to go back to Windows 7 and stop asking for help. The patch works well and I would love to recommend it, but I feel like I'd rather not support such behavior.

Is there a way to downgrade the unofficial patch from the GOG version? I've read that you can simply remove the folder but that doesn't seem to fully get rid of everything (game still has widescreen support, built in mod loader, etc) and neither the mod page nor the readme seem to have instructions for removing it. I noticed on your website it mentions uninstalling though

from what i can tell there are a lot of duplicate files that are left in the main folder for vtmb that would also need to be removed in addition to the unofficial_patch folder. the only files in the main folder should be a_basetexture.tth, dbghelp.dll, nosequence.txt, vampire.dat, vampire.exe, and version.inf see if removing everything but those and the unofficial_patch folder helps

Thanks for the reply, I tried removing those files but it still didn't seem to fully unpatch it. I found a folder in Bin called "loader" which seemed to also contain files for the mod loader, so I tried removing that and it did remove the widescreen support but in-game under the Game tab in options it still lists the mod loader. I'm not fully against just playing with the unofficial patch if it becomes necessary but after watching your video I would prefer to play 1.2 instead. I could maybe look for the Steam version instead

Looks like there's a bit of friction over this issue lol I followed the link posted by LordUra, but it looks like the link to the script in the GOG forums thread that was made to revert the files back requires permission to access now. I'll try what another user mentioned (renaming the .12 files) and see if that works, but the files put in the Bin folder lead me to think that probably won't be all. I respect Wesp's dedication to supporting this game but I wish there were another answer aside from "Buy the steam version and apply the patches you want".

Damn what a shit show, I did a run with the basic unofficial patch and it was 100% crashing on twin bosses in Giovanny dungeons. As for the disappearing geometry in true patch I have a theory: devs increased FOV a bit and as a result geometry is getting culled when it's around screen edges within non native FOV. And damn what a charming and sane person that Teserae is :D There's some weird overlap between unstable people and the modding scene (Final Fantasy 12 and Skyrim scenes are a good example).

generally people who want to experience the game as vanilla as possible before getting into patches and mods care, aside from speedrunners like myself. my goal for the video was not to review the patches but to compare them as it relates to a vanilla playthrough, which is what is wanted for speedrunning. for a bunch of people (most people) the unofficial patch just is the vanilla experience and that's good enough, and it sounds to me like you're in that boat. so yea you wouldn't be bothered by the changes between official 1.2, TPG, and UP, and that's fine, at least the video was entertaining (:
