I wonder if the Diderot Effect applies to other things? For instance sometimes I check one social media outlet and the next thing I know I am checking all of them even though there was no reason to, and I actually needed to spend my time doing something else. I find this also when I eat a little junk food then I want more. Maybe this is a human nature thing? Very interesting!

There is this one example that Joshua didn't mention about the Diderot Effect is the smartphone (or any high-value purchase, really!) We sought after the best products, which often come with a hefty price tag. We baby it with screen protectors, phone covers, and even buy warranty plans, to feel secure about spending a bomb on something delicate; to have an ease of mind. Expensive products can be a black hole for time and attention. The unmoderated desire to consume consumes us instead.

This couldn’t be more true! I used to be the person who is always buying new clothes that at first I needed but then I didn’t have the right shoes or the right purse etc. and had to go buy more and more. Now I only wear a handful of colors (light pink, light blue, mustard yellow, and green) and then of course the basics of grey, black, and white. It has changed my shopping pattern so much! When I have to buy a new shirt, I select one in those colors and I know it’ll match everything that I already own :)

Whenever I buy something new I always ask myself is this is going to match my other clothes, how many outfits I can create with it, or is it going to match my living space if it's a new blanket for example, where will I keep it, do I have space for it, what will I do with an old item if I'm replacing something, how much time will I have to spend to maintain this new item and so on. It might seem like a lot but I rarely ever buy unnecessary things just for sake of buying them.

Fascinating. I'm guilty as charged. We recently had to buy a new fridge because our 16 year old one was not working properly. The next month I replaced the still working 16 year old oven. I think age is a factor too. At 64, I buy less than I did when I was younger. My husband and I like clothes, but we now love buying them from secondhand shops online. We used to buy pottery when we traveled, but how many mugs do you need? Fortunately we both hate clutter, so our living space is minimalist. Favorite story: One day a woman visited us with a friend. When she walked in and looked around she said, "Where's all your stuff?" 😂 But sometimes it's fun to buy something just because we admire it. I never regret buying art, or a comfortable pair of shoes. Cheers!

If buying things that you don't need is the werewolf of consumption, then garage sales is its full moon. I've brought things home from garage sales that I thought were an excellent buy and they were because they filled a genuine need and were pennies on the dollar. The rest of my garage sale purchases end up...you know where...in the garage - that or I stub my big toes with them.

Wow! I had no idea that Denis Diderot spoke of this spiralling consumeristic effect... And it completly resonates with me. I needed a bigger planter for a living room plant that is growing well and that I actually enjoy. It is my only plant and I enjoy giving it water every morning... It seems to say good morning to me! I bought a bigger planter so it can grow more beautiful and tall. I shopped a long time to find a planter that I enjoyed and fit my vision, and refused to settle. I actually heard myself say in the store, before I found the one that was the right fit...'well this one is nice, I'll use it until I find the right one..." DOH!! Stopped myself there!! And I applied Diderot in recognizinf I need more soil, fertilizer and a tutor. And I told myself, finding the right planter would mean that I would not feel compelled to change the ottoman or the cushions, etc.

I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice and its really interesting because there is a part in the book where one of the sisters buys a bonnet just for the sake of buying something even though its ugly. The book was written in the middle of the industrial revolution in England. So people were beginning to consume more. Culture was changing back then and the writer was pointing it out. It's so much worse now. I've definitely fallen into the trap of buying things on sale. I would always be in the clearance section of a store with no intention of finding a specific item. Then I'd find something that I know was expensive back when it was popular. I'd buy it just for the sake of having it because at one time it was such a wanted item. Clearly now it wasn't since it was in the discounted rack.

I think it's important not to minimize other people's things. Minimalism is something each person needs to do for themselves. You can discuss this effect with your daughter, but school is difficult for many young people. I was criticized when I started wearing the same things most of the time. Everybody's situation is different. Men's and women's wardrobes and expectations are different. At certain times in life, you need to show that you know how to make a good impression. At a job interview, for instance, you need to look like you know how to be appropriate for the situation you are in.

@@musicianonamission8435 I totally agree! It's called entitlement. I was annoyed with the thought to have to buy backpacks every year, because of trends and marketing! In addition, the cheaper ones break, "making" you need to buy a new one, and keep up with the new styles, which does not encourage contentment. So I researched, and although a little pricy, LLbean has amazing quality, and warranty, but it pays off in the long run. My kiddos are going to keep these until they wear out. I read reviews that they are so good, that people in college have had their original backpack since grade school, and LLbean had replaced it for them if there was a broken zipper or issue. My kiddos have already had theirs for several years and they know we are not getting new ones for the sake of getting new ones. It's about the standard we as parents set as well.

I'm trying to learn to accept paying $6 for shipping rather than putting, say, an $8 item I don't need in the cart to not have to pay that. This is so true. Buy a new pair of speakers will 'need' a new pair of wires, and followed by new pair of speaker stands, and a new amplifier, and a new set of isolators, and the list goes on forever. Thanks Joshua, love your channel!

It's interesting that we (humans) have been doing this buying thing for years. I thought it was a more recent action. I've moved many times in my life so I've experienced the actual cost of a move. It's way more than most people consider. The closing costs and repairs are one aspect. The cleanup, painting and upgrades are another. What furnishings worked in one house do not always work in a new house. It's amazing how much a person spends because they bought something and then see reason to buy something else.

My daughter taught me when she was 10 not to fall into marketing gimmicks. All the buy one get one half sales. Once I couldn't find another shoe I liked and she said why are you spending more? Get the one shoe and it will be less than 1 1/2. She was right. Those things nickel and dime you without you realizing it sometimes.

This is such great content! I immediately thought of home buying as probably the king of this effect, just one more reason to downsize the home each time we make a move, to ensure that we not only make our lives easier as far as chores go, but to ensure there's just no room to drag in extra stuff that we never needed in the first place.

I bought a 4K projection TV and 110 inch screen - best money I've ever spent since the size and sharpness of the image are just like sitting in a movie theater and we have gotten hours of satisfaction from it - but now we're feeling the strong temptation to buy home theater seating and to upgrade the sound system even though the couch is just as comfortable as when we bought it 17 years ago and sound system sounds just as good as one I bought it 20 years ago. So yeah, I get it.

Someone gave us a better tv than we had. Then my husband started wanting more expensive speakers. He wanted a fancier mount. Then he started wanting a giant tv that would take up an entire wall. I was horrified. I told him that we should just give the tv back if that's how it was going to be.

I wonder if it applies to home remodeling, paint a wall need to change the door because it doesn’t match the wall color, then replace the toilet but now need a new vanity to match the toile, it never ends.

When we moved out of our previous, carpeted apartment to one with laminate floors, we were happy to take "replace the overheating vacuum" off our list of upcoming expenses. But we soon found the new place desperately needed rugs, particularly in the hall and living room. I intentionally bought small-ish, lighter weight, low pile rugs that I could sweep regularly and pick up to shake out without it being a big production, so getting rugs didn't force us to have to buy a vacuum, after all. The mini shop vac we keep around for cleaning the car and hard-to-dust places is more than adequate for the occasional deeper cleaning of such rugs. Bonus: lower pile rugs are cheaper than thick, cushy, high-pile rugs.

I needed to hear this. We've been overspending. We did exactly what you just said. We sold our 10 yr old bdrm set when we sold our home bc we want a new, prettier one 😣😣 There was nothing wrong with our bdrm set. I need to derail this wants vs needs in my head starting now!

Didn't realized it until I've watched this. It's true, I have lots of bags and wallets because I want them matches. Onced, I bought a new wallet and realized I want the bag with the same design too. Now, I'm beginning to become a minimal and be intentional with my purchases or sticking to what I have right now as long they have purpose in my life.

I bought a dress to wear with a particular jacket and shoes only to discover I’d given those items away ( I often go looking for what I’ve given away) so the challenge now is to find suitable alternatives in my wardrobe - ashamed to say it won’t be hard 🤷‍♀️

We moved house last year. I don’t think the sofas match the room but they match the things we brought with us. So if we bought 2 new sofas, we would then have to buy a new coffee table, a new side table, a new console table for our speaker/cable, new cushions, new throws etc. It would be a huge snowball effect which would not only get us into debt, but it will be a never ending cycle of changing things. Like a dog chasing it’s tail. It turns out, everything does match. You don’t need just one block colour in your living room :)

I came from a poor country. I know what it means to have less. I'm amazed to see what many throw away, For example; a shirt missing a button is no longer useful; instead of fixing it. It's no longer useful to the owner.

It's terrible but you're right - I used to be like that. I remember when I noticed that the tray in my toaster over was getting rusty and I was on the verge of throwing the whole thing out and getting a whole new oven since toaster ovens are so cheap. Luckily I realized what I was about to do and just bought a new tray but if I hadn't been starting to become more aware of my consumption I probably just would have tossed the whole thing and bought a new one. It's an awful, wasteful mentality...

My mom was a war orphan and my dad's parents had very little. We got lessons in not wasting when we were kids. I bought my kids clothes at garage sales or they wore what friends gave us. I repaired anything I could. Many toys were made from cardboard boxes or juice cans. My grandkids are very careful with money, too. Tina

I heard someone else say that when she buys something new, she gets rid of the same number of items as soon as it enters her home. If you buy a new dress, an old one gets tossed ( or donated), and if you can’t do that, you didn’t need the new one. I have really shopped as a source of entertainment for years. I am realizing how disgusting a habit that is. 😩
