Nothing that was major or expensive, just a little time consuming. When we were finished I was so upset with myself that I hadn’t done those things years sooner so that we could enjoy how nice everything looked.

Yup, I recently repainted my parents kitchen cabinets and they always said that they need a bigger kitchen... After taking everything out of the cabinets I'd estimate easily over 50% of the cabinet space was taken up by decorative dishes/cups that are never used or old junk that hasn't been touched in years. Counters were cluttered with stuff that could easily fit in that 50%+ cabinet space.

This advice is great. We live this way and it is phenomenal. It takes us a few minutes each day to put things away. But he is right everything needs a home and most things that don't can go. Today was a really great day. We helped someone else declutter, our neighbor. She was overwhelmed with her garage. My husband and I offered to take to goodwill whatever she placed out of her garage. We did and she was in tears after, she just needed encouragement and someone to help take it. Now that we can help others, we feel so grateful. Thanks Joshua for your motivation!

@@patriciajohnsonson8639 Do it now. You may be surprised at how different you feel in your mid-70's than you do in your late 60's, first of all. Second,, it's good to live for today and tomorrow not yesterday. Sometimes lingering around in an environment which has lived out its usefulness instead of moving into a space that meets one's needs today is more of a drag than we realize until we make the move. No one ever says they are so miserable after downsizing and going through all their "stuff" and unburdening themselves. Everyone says they are delighted and wish they had done it sooner. Ask around. That said, the "dread" can definitely be doing the work to dig out and prepare a house for sale ugh! But again, better sooner than later when it's only going to be harder. Good luck.

In process of doing it again for myself. Thanks Joshua for reminding us what’s important. One of the smartest things you can do is if your house is minimal it's not going to cost that much for somebody to come in and clean it if you and your husband go out and eat or go on vacation you spend money all the time have someone to come in and clean your home It is not that great a luxury as people think There's nothing better than coming in after your house is clean and fresh it saves you so much stress and if you're not getting around to it or you don't want to clean in those places there's someone that needs the money so just do it You will never regret it. I believed to have someone clean your home and cut your yard are two of the best stress relievers there is unless you love doing it yourself and you have the time

I could not agree more. Having somebody clean your house/apartment even if it is only once a month is the best decision you will ever make. It is the best return on investment. And do not clean with the cleaner, no, go for a walk, a coffee, meet a friend. For me, this was a life changer, the closest thing to luxury. None of the previous owners wanted to invest in the upkeep or maintenance. Both bathrooms and kitchen are old and need updated as does the windows. Originally we wanted to focus on paying off the mortgage as fast as possible as Dave Ramsey suggests, but we decide that we want to tackle a major repair or update each year and enjoy living in our condo. We replaced the hot water tank, replacing the entire carpet and pad throughout condo, and upgrading both bathroom and kitchen floors. Possibly get new AC & furnace this year as well. Next year we will update our kitchen since that's a bigger and more expensive project. We want to enjoy living in our condo while we are here. Don't want to fix it up for someone else to enjoy!

We were not going to do much of anything else, because we were going to move out of state to our son's area in Texas, but all has changed for different reasons, good reasons, not bad. So this concept sounds right to me. We can no longer do slot or afford slot, such as removing pop corn a, but we can freshen everything with paint . We have already removed slot of clutter, ( a little more to do....so just want to say we have to be thinking of our son and his family having to come from Texas after we're gone, and they would've had to deal with soooooo much more let alone all the paperwork and the "then" selling of our home....so I feel a great gift to them would be to do as much of it as we can now, before that time

Yup, I didn’t even have to from the realtor because it was an easy sell but I repainted the bathroom and should’ve done it years ago. Now we’re living in a definitely unminimalistic home (To Dutch standards, probably modest to American standards). But it’s a place to share and host. It looked much better than it turned out in terms of paint, and that’s okay because it wasn’t to our taste. So no we’re slowly making it ours, with some help of friends at a social distance. And we’re following most of your advice in doing so. I’m going to think about decorations. I’m not into decor, but some pictures somewhere might be nice 😎

Hey when I saw Kim open the tidy and minimal kitchen drawer it made me want to have her give us a kitchen tour of the insides of your drawers and cabinets.

Such simple but wise advise. Now, let's get the notepad out and put together a room by room "things to do" list. 🦉

A house fire removed 1/3 of our possessions. After 7+ years living an a fire damaged house, my husband says he will build me a tiny house. I am continuing to downsize, only keeping what we need! I am not sure how many families have the time to deep clean. I try to deep clean 1 time/year. I call it multi-tasking doing Spring and Fall cleaning all at the same time!

Sept 25, 2020. Cleaning out papers early this AM. Found a newspaper adticle dated Sept 25, 1995, titled "Voluntary Simplicity". I save some articles for inspiration; will keep this one. Minimalism has been going on forever, it just wasn't called that b4 da Tube. 😸😁 Keep on truckin'.

I have been slowly getting rid of "stuff" since the kids finished college and moved out.......I love my organized clutter free house. I do find I am always working at not buying stuff we don't use. It's a commitment but a worthwhile one, to mindfully keep your house clean and organized. Videos, like yours Josh I continue to watch and read your newsletters to keep the momentum going.

We call Realtors Estate Agents in the UK. They don’t come in and tell you what to do. Most buyers can use their imagination to see beyond other people’s clutter. I like to buy something a bit shabby, pay less and make it mine when I move in. Neither would this clinical environment feel ‘homely’ to me. I like my ‘stuff’! Each to their own.

Great ideas! Great perspective! A home enjoyed is a home easy to sell .... because a loved home exudes that!

I thought that too, often people renovate their home to sell. Crazy!

We recently sold our home. It was staged beautifully. I left realizing I didn’t need so much furniture or items laying around. Our new home has been more intentional about what comes in. I’m still going through rooms & removing items. Storage unit has been dealt with finally! Keep up the great work! This one gives a different perspective!🤓

My coworker had to rent a pod to sell his home and used his MIL home (she reminded him often he was picking up that clutter back up!) He thought later, did he really need all that? Sometimes seeing it all together is a wake-up call

Brilliant video. Hubby & I have moved 8 times in our 23 yrs of marriage. I've had this same thought every time we've gone through the getting ready to sell phase. Thank you for the kick in the pants I needed to stop procrastinating!

Your title is the exact words I used to find your video. We just sold our house a few months ago and I loved how it felt staged. So now I want my new house to feel that way. Thanks for the video

The house across the street from mine just sold for twice what my identical one was appraised for four hears ago, and nearly $400K more than listing. It was painted inside, carpeted, staged and the garden was manicured and barked, but mostly it was immaculate! It showed wonderfully well and inspired me to have less stuff.

Great advice 👍 I love being able to reset the house in 15 min. Now for a big project, new floors... I will have to do it before I sell, so might as well doing it now and enjoying it. Thanks

I’ve also noticed the more I deep clean my home the more I want to declutter and keep the surfaces clear. Who wants to clean around all that stuff? Great video. Thank you.

What a great mindset to have - "stage your home for living." Reminds me of the "use the good china" mentality. I recently did several of these whiles starting my decluttering journey. When I tell you the amount of joy I got from deep cleaning the grout all over the house... lol. Thank you, Joshua!

This is so true! Great tips. For me I am attacking visual clutter and deep cleaning. I love going in the morning into a bright clean bathroom. (it's currently in chaos).

Agree totally... that's what I've been telling my hubby, especially after watching some TV shows of buyers not liking the decorations / renovations and have them all removed/redone after they've bought the places. What a waste of money and materials!

We learned this after a few moves too. My husband spent one afternoon doing all the little minor fixes we’d put off for over a year and I deep cleaned. Afterward we both wondered why we didn’t do it ages ago for ourselves.

I LOVE THIS!!!!! It speaks my mind. I have watched home improvement shows where the family removes clutter, toys, and who knows what, in order to have the work done. I always think, are they really going to bring all of that junk back inside their beautiful, remodeled home!!!???!!!!! I struggle with clutter and wish relatives would cooperate with my wish for no Christmas presents. Even practical gifts that I can use become a problem, even if I need them, if they don't fit in my space.

If you leave things on the floor and or “store” them on surfaces after 1-week I will throw it away. PERIOD

If my kids didn’t put toys away I would put them in a box (jail) and they had to do a small chore to get them out. My husband, ugg! He’s very good about kitchen and living areas but I gave up after 26 years 😂 and still clean up in our bedroom/bathroom.

I’ve watched this video periodically. We plan to do this to our house and property which have been neglected somewhat with raising 4 young kids. We plan to bring our home to its former glory this spring and summer. Thanks for the great video, Joshua. We plan to stage our house for living.
