What is the difference between a GBA SP AGS 101 and a GBA SP AGS 001?

When I was younger I jumped in a pool with my 001... (I didn't notice it was in my pocket) It stayed in the pool for at least 15 mins before we noticed. I put it in rice if I recall correctly and after 2 to 4 days (sorry, my memory's playing tricks on me) it was working like a brand new one! Well, except for the light that was broken. Since I could barely see my screen without the light, I went to buy a new one and the 101 just got released the same week. I got my pearl blue half price because the box was ''already opened''. (only a little piece of tape to keep the box shut was missing..)

i prefer the ags-001 if it's bright outside, turn frontlight off if it's dark, turn frontlight on. you can't see the ags-101 in the light because of a backlit screen. try using your phone in the sun and you'll see what i mean

I swapped my AGS-101 into a NES AGS-001 shell that had water damage (unfixable). I just bought a spare silver replacement shell for the screen rubbers so I could fix that up nicely aswell. Works like a charm!

There's a few advantages to the front light that I noticed after I switched out my 001 for a 101. The front lit screen is able to be viewed in direct sunlight extremely well where as you can't hardly see the 101's screen. The other is the front lit screen has less motion blur which I get used to after while, but it was sort of daunting when I went to play Klonoa and all the black lines get a little thicker and fuzzy, and I really noticed it when playing Gradius Galaxies that I could barely see my shots. Putting the screen on maximum brightness does help, but still it's not as good as the front lit. However a big disadvantage of the front lit is color fidelity. The colors on the front lit look great until you have to use the light and then they all get a washed out bluish tinge to them. Overall in most applications the 101 wins. I just wish it didn't have so much motion blur. I suppose that's what my Game Boy Player on the Game Cube is for. Great video comparison though. Alot of people still don't know how to pick out the bright screens.

It all comes down to personal preffance for example what kinds of games you like to play and under what light conditions you will being playing under I plan to be playing in a semi dark to fully dark room so the AGS101 is what i should have also i plan on playing mostly slow paced RPG stragty games not high action fast moving characters on screen so that being said both the AGS 001 and AGS 101 are good just depends what games you want to play and where you want to play them.

If thats what it is a dress jacket coat but more just the thickness of it and the weight and use of a rain parka/pncho but not a poncho.

I have found differences that make both good and bad for certain gaming invironments: The AGS 001 model is easier to see when you have the light off and it has a slightly longer battery life when the backlight is turned of. The AGS 101 has better color quality and has two light options.

I was blessed with having an AGS-101 as a young child. I still have it to this day and it still works. I remember playing that thing and just begging for a DS because it seemed like everyone had one. I got my DS Lite(which is still my main go to handheld I take with me even though I have newer systems) but I was smart enough to never sell my Gameboy. The AGS-101 is a pretty valuable system and I don’t plan on ever selling it.

I made my own modified ags 101 from a cheap black ags 001 on ebay with case like new but badly scratched screen, then I imported the ags101 screen fairly cheap from Japan and swapped them over, really simple to do and lots of helpful videos on KZbin. I just got a 101 model that I bought from a friend at school for $25. But the shell is in bad condition. I just ordered a new shell for it. The color of my GBA is Pearl blue. The power switch needs a little work. When I switch it on nothing happens so I had to switch it on and off and then it comes on. So I will have to figure out how to fix it

all you need to do is to disassemble the console and dip a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and rub the power switch, when the power switch is wet switch the power switch on and off for a few seconds, then reassemble the console and you are done!!! :) (I tried this method and it works like a charm)

+Brian Griswold The battery part is AGS-003. The AGS-001 and AGS-101 would be listed on the sticker on the back of the unit itself. So, if you have a backlit screen, your unit is an AGS-101.

The battery on both my 001's lasts around 3 to 3 and a half hours. 001's are my favourites because it suits me and my need for devices that live longer than an hour. I have heard that 101's have a shorter battery life because the backlit screen can't be turned off. I trot around with my 001, I switch the frontlight and volume off and it lasts ages. I also prefer 001's because I can find them cheap. I see 101's for 60 euro plus with charger but I got my second 001 for 40 euro with a pikachu gba and the charger. My first 001 I got for 4 euro.

I bought mine back when the GBA SP was current. It was a new, boxed retail unit so I couldn't have checked any of that (didn't even know about the 001 and 101 thing). About a decade and a half I find out it was the rubbish one. Instantly recognised mine when you opened up the grey 001 model. Mine's even the same colour Still works perfectly fine to this day, unlike the DS Lite whose hinge broke in a draw (the battery died next because I couldn't find the US to UK adaptor for 6 months)

Idk, I quite like the on and off about AGS 001. If you're not a typical gamer, and actually go outside, I'd say AGS 001 is for you! I'm only kidding, but I have always found it annoying playing on my old AGS 101 screen during car rides, as the sun coming in through the windows made it impossible for me to see the screen. That is why I prefer the AGS 001. What's the point of playing a portable console if you can't play it outdoors?

Not the refresh ratio, but the response time. FPS wise they all do have the same, but the 101 screen shows ghosting easier than the 001 (and original AGB 001 game boy Advance)

That could have different reasons. Did you use a game? If not, then be aware that the GBA SP does not have a menu screen like the DS or other newer Nintendo consoles do. The other reason I know about is that the game you tried to use could be a fake (has happened to me before).

still trying to figure out why the third gba the one not shown hear with the buttons on ether side of the screen has no light at all it came out in 2001 and the game gear a system with a light came out in 1990

+justin rivera Cost and initial battery life. Remember that, in the United States, the Game Boy line of products all launched at $99.99 or less. The Game Gear, in retrospect, launched at $149.99. There was a "back lit" Game Boy Lite but that unit was skipped for release in the United States in favor of the Game Boy Color. The other issue had to do with lighting up that TFT screen on the GBA. Other handhelds with that screen, like the Neo Geo Pocket Color and the Wonder Swan Crystal, also have an issue with lighting up that screen properly as none of them have a back light either. The GBA SP 001 has a front light and the GBA SP 101 actually has a different screen altogether. What's interesting about the GBA SP 101 screen is that it is the same kind of screen that the 3DS uses for Glasses Less 3D, but it does not have the refresh rate or resolution to properly display that 3D feature at a proper, workable pace.

Both are good. Older version actually looks wayyy better in natural sunlight

Had a used video game store employee tried to sell me the 001 model as the 101 model. Specifically, I asked if they had the Backlit Gameboy Advance SP. He said yes and showed me the front lite version.

I got a 101 model specifically to play the Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1-3 remakes. The graphics totally pop and make them look 100% better. The backlight is akin to a DS to me.

I somehow managed to get an AGS 101 on craigslist for 5 bucks with nothing wrong and a nice skin on it. The only downfall was no charger was included but still was too good of a deal. I also had a blue GBA SP at the time but decided to sell it because I noticed how amazing it was compared to it side by side.
