I've been thinking the same things about the frontlit screen for a while now. I remember getting my mind blown when I was little when I realized the ags-001 was just as easy to see outside as it is inside, unlike my DS-Lite. I since lost that Gameboy which is one of the saddest things that happened to me, and I should have replaced it when I had the chance cause now it is impossible to find even an ags-001 on ebay for under $60. I resorted to using my completely unmodified fat gba cause at least I can get fresh air while I play.

I had heard a million times that the 101 is the better model simply because it's backlit, but after seeing them side by side and your explanation I think you're right, the 001 is more practical. And yes, IPS is so much better it's not even comparable. I upgraded my 101 recently and it made it feel like a brand new console. If you're actually using your SP to play games and not just collecting, modding is a no-brainer. As a side note its wild seeing the amount of scratches on all three of those units. And every single one is a reason why the clamshell design is so fantastic.

This is the most copium message I've ever heard. For anyone finding this video and reading this more recently, funnplayings IPS screens, any version, is fantastic. BUT there was a huge boom in modding and this comment was made during that boom during covid. It's a negligible difference to 101 and is absofrickinlutely not worth putting into an AGS101. I repeat AGS 101 screen is not worth replacing with an IPS screen. It's fun to do but this comment is akin to those people who use to swear by gaming chairs like DX racers while their backs are getting destroyed just because they can't admit they threw 400$ at garbage. If you wanna mod for fun go ahead, that's great. But if you are thinking and IPS mod is going to make a difference while you're actually using the console vs the original 101 screen, you're objectively wrong but I respect your opinion.

I think a significant factor for the reason why people might prefer 101s for backlight screens is because of battery life and maybe also having the "original form" of the console itself. IPS screens drain batteries like no other without the additional brightness feature making it lower, but even then it is still higher than 101s on average iirc

Once you bump the brightness up on an AGS-101, the battery life difference evaporates

I appreciate this. My personal opinion is that people diss on the AGS-001 far, far too much. Being able to actually view the dang thing outdoors in bright, direct sunlight as well as in the pure dark is great, and only the original DS and the Game Boy Light also share that capability without having to perform any kind of modification. Also while it may be a tad washed out, I actually quite appreciate that for GB and GBC games, which tend to use pure white for background elements and are very straining on the eyes to see in the dark for extended periods of time with fully backlit screens. Great example being battles in Pokémon. The more washed out color gamut is, in a sense, a bit more similar to the GBC. In [current year] there's really no reason to go out of your way for 101s anymore when you have drop-in backlit screens. I do personally like them, but they are truly not all they're hyped up to be. Unless you're REALLY desperate for that pixel grid, I guess. But I'm sure it'll eventually happen for those that can't imagine a Game Boy without a grid. I have a GBA SP AGS-101 motherboard around here (shell was brittle and already partially fallen apart, and screen was dead when I got it) that I plan on getting a shell for and one of those Cloud Game Store laminated screens because I am not applying a screen lens and risking misaligning the screen or getting my fingerprints all over it. No reason to bother trying to get the quickly dwindling supply of spare 101 screens.

I do like how the 101 looks, sometimes even more than my IPS, but the viewing angle is so bad with the 101 that even a slight tilt will immediately wash out the colors. I have to hold it in a really specific angle to view the "correct" colors. So for that alone, the IPS is so much better. I can lean back and play in bed in weird angles and basically get the "optimal" experience.

Even though the 101 model is brighter and technically 'better' I actually still prefer the 001 front lit model more because my eyes are more sensitive light and without the ability to turn the bright ness down on either consoles, the ags 101 only has two options bright or extremely bright. Even on my Nintendo Switch and on most of my other devices I ususally turn the brightness down because of that.

@@makho the oversaturation of ips screens actually makes it harder for me to appreciate pixel art in certain games. My go to examples are usually wario land 4 and minish cap. On IPS screens the colors are so bright and saturated that subtle shading or differences in color to show layers or distance don't come across well at all, and the play area seems really flat as a result. @@ecoao80 that's the design of the game. the developers knew the original GBA screens were going to be crap, so they boosted the saturation of the colors so the colors appeared as intended and not washed out. but when you swap in an IPS screen, you're now getting very saturated colors because the game was originally designed to be very saturated, as the devs were expecting you to be using the AGB screen. afaik that's why some later GBA games have an option to change the color profiles, cause colors also looked very saturated on the official 101. there's color restoration ROM hacks to desaturate the colors and make it look normal on emulators/IPS screens (Pokemon Crystal Clear has two color profiles to choose from, for example), that might be worth looking into if it really annoys you

the ips kits just don't look like gameboy screens to me. i know there is pixel grid emulation but it still just doesn't look the same. if i wanted a look like the ips kits i would mod my 3ds/vita/switch and emulate. if i want to play on real hardware portably and get an authentic gameboy look my best options are an original ds lite for gameboy advance and a gameboy advance sp ags-101 for gameboy/gameboy color. you say that these screens have issues like ghosting and bad viewing angles. the bad viewing angles i concede is 100% true, but not really relevant if you're playing inside the house (which i am 99% of the time), the ghosting is actually part of the look of nintendo portables upto the dsi afaik, and you've talked about before how you'll get flickering in certain games without it, so the lack of ghosting can actually be looked at as a con from an purist perspective. i will note that there is a much cheaper decent option besides the ags-101 for people like me, and that's the dsi kits from funnyplaying. i think these give a more authentic, slightly upgraded look compared to the 101/ds lite. it's probably the most palatable upgrade for people who still want a pixelated look, but again purists may still not care for it.

No pre-GBA games were designed with a backlit (or even frontlit) screen in mind.

It's perfect for both indoor and outdoor usage and also has a stable battery consumption. If you want to maintain the real-feel with vivid colors then AGS-101 or Nintendo DS lite are perfect for your gba titles.

I dunno, I had both models when I was younger, and I remember trading in my 001 for a 101 at an EB Games several years later because it was backlit. I hated not being able to see the screen on my slate GBA and the GBC I had before unless I was in good light or had one of those screen light things. Was one of the reasons I bought an SP, as the screen on the 001 reminded me of that but built in with a rechargeable battery that lasted longer than 2xAA batteries did. It wasn't so apparent back then because it was better than what I was looking at before, but the lighting was totally crap. The edge lighting shining on the screen washed out the colors slightly and just wasn't uniform across the screen. I never really noticed it until I got my hands on a demo model of the 101 at an EB and noticed the difference. Compared to today and even 10 years ago, the 101 screen is definitely crap. Back then however, it was a noticeable improvement IMHO. It solved my only real complaints other than the speaker volume being low. I never noticed anything with the viewing angles because I always held it at around the right angle. Probably from experience looking at the LCD PC monitors that were becoming increasingly common around that time. I didn't notice the ghosting back then either, although its fairly noticeable today after having phones with OLED screens for years now. Pretty sure I had a weird look on my face when I noticed it after getting back into GBA a while back. The audio volume is even more terrible than I remembered. Makes you wonder if that was intentional to push people to use headphones, which required you to buy the adapter. I feel like if you're going to mod, just get a 001 since its cheaper and the cash you save can be applied to the mods themselves. If you want a closer to the original experience with no mods, or minimal mods like a better battery, and a new shell if the old is all nasty and beat up, then a 101 would be good. Just my honest opinion, my vision is crap so might just be me.

@@Joe3D I mean, the fact that it's the only backlit (from the factory) Game Boy console (not counting the micro and light -- neither of which can play GBC exclusive games) probably weighs heavily in its favor. It's fine compared to stock consoles but consoles modded with newer screens blow it away. You gotta consider that only very recently have we had options for these things. In 2005, if you wanted a backlit GB, your options were the AGS-101 or the GBA only Micro (and for like $30 more, a DS that played all the same GBA games as the micro but also DS games). In 2012, if you wanted a backlit GB, your options were an AGS-101 or to rip the screen out of that console and stuff it in a AGB-001. And that was it until about 2018. In 2018, you could backlight a Color with... an AGS-101 LCD. Aside from an outlier that was low volume and hard to get, it wasn't until about 2019 that we actually started getting other options.

If the problem is with the screen itself, yeah. You're not going to get very far without any games though.

Once an IPS screen is released with configurable colour options (like the GBC has received), it'd be the way to go because then you can replicate the color dynamics of the GBA (or NDS, or GBC, or whatever you want). Right now, the IPS gives me an inauthentic impression (but then again, who cares. It is modded after all, no longer authentic). What do you think of the AGS-010 approach? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpm1aaVtmbySiLs

I have actually done the "AGS-010" mod before (but no video -- my specific mod predates my youtube account) and while it does noticeably improve brightness, it impacts battery life more significantly than just installing an IPS kit does. The brightness on the AGS-001 has diminishing returns. Also, I have lobbied before for color options in kits but the language barrier makes communicating what I want specifically pretty difficult.

puedo poner una pantalla de la 001 en una placa 101?

No. The screens require different voltages and you will destroy the LCD if you go the wrong way.

I have the Famicom AGS-101s I absolutely love it. I owned an original gameboy back when they were released and it seemed cool but it wasn't color I have a Nintendo DS-Lite which was the first handheld console I've owned since the original console which I sold years ago. I like the DS Lite but I guess the games it came with are just boring. But I bought it more as a collectors item than something to get on all day every day

Yeah, its weird, i always go with my 001 especially when going out, its all around. And best battery life. 101 is cool if you just in doors.

My problem with the 001 is it washes out colors so bad. I grew up with a 101 and trying to use an 001 I picked up was so hard on the eyes I just stopped and picked up a 101 lol
@Jared.Elliott3 жыл бұрын
Side note, I also ordered an ips kit for the 001, as I know it is the best you can get visually so now I'll have the best of both worlds!!

hot take: IPS screens look bad, double pixeling is ugly, the colors are oversaturated and flicker isn't processed correctly which leads to image persistence. until they fix all of that, IPS are inferior to both, ags001 and ags101.

My AGS-101 was my go to GBA sp console when I was a kid, disagree that the 001 is better. You're definitely right that a modded IPS GBA sp is best regardless anyways.

In my opinion the AGS101 is the best because pixel grid and also the IPS kits look so super clear (I love them, got a normal GBA with it) as it's an emulator The normal screens just feel how it was supposed to be in my opinion and it just looks best! Of course this is all subjective and everyone sees it different :)
@makho3 жыл бұрын
It's not really the "normal" screen though. The original GBA is the "normal" screen. The clarity of the 9380 based IPS kits is unmatched though.

Do the ips kits look right though? Isn't the 101 pixel perfect? Or do the ips kits have the same resolution?
@makho Жыл бұрын
All OEM consoles are native resolution. Older backlight kits (9380) and some current "drop-in" kits are all 2:1 or 3:1 ratio so four or nine pixels respectively on the replacement screen represent one pixel that the GB outputs. Current funnyplaying offerings are 1:1 for ITA kits or a non-integer scale for the 3.0" kit. The scaling looks fine IMO. If you pixel peep, you'll notice some fuzzyness but if you're pixel peeping, you're probably not actually playing games.
