This video describes differences between Avoidant Personality Disorder and Schizoid Personality Disorder. These personality disorder are in different clusters in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM; Avoidant: Cluster C; Schizoid:Cluster A).
Schizoid Personality Disorder is characterized by detachment, being a “loner,” no interest in forming relationships, a deficit in social skills, taking jobs that isolate them from others, no close friends, decreased interest in pleasurable activities, indifference to praise or criticism, cold or flat affect. Clinically significant distress is not required for a diagnosis of Schizoid Personality as stated in the DSM. Avoidant Personality Disorder is characterized by fear of social situations, social inhibition, panic attacks, isolation, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, and feelings of inferiority. Individuals with Avoidant Personality Disorder usually want to form close friendships, whereas and individual with Schizoid Personality Disorder is usually not interest in relationships. In terms of the Five-Factor Model of personality, Avoidant Personality Disorder is associated with low extraversion and high neuroticism and Schizoid Personality Disorder is is associated with low extraversion and low neuroticism.

i was always shy, but then i devoped severe social anxiety from the age of 12-14 After that i became avoidant but ive never had self esteem issues really, and i did crave intamate relationships howevee over time i became disinterested in social relationships which has prevented me from moving beyond my social anxiety that caused me to have no friends basically im stuck. i cant move forward. because i have no interest to move on anymore. i really feel content, almost happy being alone. and i hate social interaction.

My parents narcissism, caused me to become a schizoid. Write that one down guys. I'm not BS'ing. I'll be honest though, yes i want help, but i also see great benefit in being a schizoid. I truly believe that my disorder (SPD) is the natural mental counter disorder to (NPD) (narcissistic personality disorder). Narcissists love to criticize people, or belittle, or intimidate, or DISCARD others, and i never feel ANY of it. I can tell by the look on their faces that that scares the living SHIT out of them, and i love that. That's all i'll say for now, but thanks for the videos. I'm glad i found them.

I'm a diagnosed Avoidant, but I also share more than half of the characteristics traditionally associated with schizoid behavior. I tend to fluctuate between the two. It all depends on what my mood is like on any given day or from moment to moment. The one aspect that's always present, however, is the constant and numbing sense of apathy. Whether I avoid things out of fear or because I'm indifferent, I always lack purpose and ambition. So for me, apathy's the glue between these 2 horrible personality disorders.

There is still a lot that is over-simplified about these disorders (I am schizoid). Schizoids have given up, whereas Avoidants still have a hope of connecting. Something that keeps being left out is how dissociative many schizoids (and avoidants) are, for example, having elaborate fantasy lives with internal “families or characters” that meet their own emotional needs. And so there IS a need for human connection, however, it is being met internally. You can’t expect every person to fit definitions and be recognizable!

Thank you, Dr. Grande. This video was very helpful to me for complicated reasons. My mother was "paranoid, schizoid personality with narcissistic qualities". That was her diagnosis I saw on a doctor's letter years ago, and now that I can listen to these videos, it makes total sense to me. I have only been diagnosed as having PTSD and generalized anxiety, however having heard this video, I would say I am most positively also an "avoidant personality" and hyper sensitive. no doubt about it. I've undergone much therapy in my past in order to be functional and accomplish my educational goals for the most part, but this video will help me going forward, so thanks... very much appreciated. I feel like you're filling in a few gaps here. ;)

I was diagnosed as avoidant at around age 12-13, when I would fight with my mother on trivial things and tried every way I could not to go to school. everything was anxiety inducing and miserable. Today, at age 24, I can see what may have been the cause. I have recently been diagnosed with severe ADHD-PI, this has been untreated up until one year ago and I have suffered for it. Suffering from fear of inevitable failure and awkwardness at an age where hormones run amok. Everything piled on until I could not even go to the movies without panic attacks. I coped from age 15 until 23, doing better until I hit a performance plateau. I could not hold a job and go to school, nor could I work full time. I was just tired all the time, could not retain information, (not just tired/lazy, I could not focus, do basic tasks etc no matter how much I willed myself) and I was tired of not feeling like a full person, I couldn't live that way, literally. Recently? I went to a neuro and he's helped me with the adhd, but unfortunately there are some things that have stuck with me and I'm not sure if the sensory overload is from the adhd or past issues, but I wonder if you could do something on non-autism/spectrum related sensory disorders? That would be interesting.

I know I have something I became so numb to social relationships that I don't even bother. The only reason I have 2 friends is because I known them since elementary and they understand how I am and accept me for me. They know I dont say much they know I have nothing against them . I wanna thank those two only friends I have since back in the day so much. I am in capable of building relationships with anyone . Even when people try to talk to me I dont contribute much to the conversation. When I do for some reason they just lose interest in what I have to say. I feel so much happier alone and I love to do solitary activities, I avoid women too I dont even deal with them as well. I am going to die alone but the thing is I dont care because I love me.

It is interesting that some of the traits of "schizoid personality disorder" are actually qualities that are sought after in some Eastern religions (like Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism)... for example, "detachment" and "indifference to praise and criticism" and transcending sexual desire.
@mikebaker2436
@mikebaker2436 5 жыл бұрын
I am a diagnosed Schizoid. The Schizoid life is not a transcendence beyond these things but a numbness and indifference to them. The similarity ends there at the superficial level. Schizoid certainly isn't eastern enlightenment as that is a loss of all self identity into the universal whole where all become one and the ego is surrendered. The Schizoid is antithetical to this as it is an ultimate independence and preservation of self identity at the expense of everything else. As a Schizoid, the ultimate aim of the eastern religions listed above is existentially horrifying to me.

I have a boyfriend who seems to either have schizoid or avoidant personality traits. I’m a therapist and still can not pinpoint it. One huge issue is that he shows almost zero excitement for activities or hobbies- almost looks like apathy. He is also the most non romantic person I know. We have dated two years and he has never just given me a love note or a gift just because he loves me. It’s like he doesn’t think about me at all.. at least it feels that way. It looks like self absorption or narcissism at times. He is not humorous or expressive. He seems very inhibited and has a lot of anxiety. If we end up talking to a worker in say a pet store he will just walk away if the conversation goes too long. It’s bizarre. I can tell I’m frustrated and angry on the inside because my emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. He has said if I want love notes or little gifts then I should go find a different man. I’m considering taking his advice at this point because this doesn’t seem like it will change. I would think if you loved someone you would want to do things you know would bring joy to their lives. With him- if he doesn’t benefit in some way, he is not investing his time, thoughts, money, etc. the only time he gets excited- temporarily- is when he buys something for himself. Is selfishness part of this whole thing?

I was diagnosed as a narc when I was a child but the more I look into it the more confused I am. I think I'm misdiagnosed or have more than one personality disorder. Know in I'm a narc so I avoid contact with others. I don't want to trouble anyone. I don't want to hurt people's feelings. So I'm completely alone and cut off from the world. The best way to show I love people is to stay away. So I do.

It seems a very thin line between APD and schizoid personality. I appreciate your clarification of the few defining differences. Given initial positive results from trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in treating PTSD, I look forward to trials of MDMA-AP in treating Avoidant Personality Disorder, which although more of a "hard-wired" situation than PTSD, seems to share quite a few manifestations. It is such a frustrating disorder for patients, therapists, physicians, and families.

I'm definitely more avoidant than schizo; I actually DO desire to have long-lasting relationships, but they always seem to end up being weird. LOL I don't understand what I do to people..... or maybe it's just that I need to choose friends better. As an artist, I'm in the company of a lot of folks who almost feel entitled to their disorders. (I'm not perfect at all, and I recognize that, but I don't understand what it is that I do to bring out the crazy in people.) For instance, one woman whose friendship I thought I was enjoying ended up having an obsession with haranguing someone she targeted for some reason and because that bothered me, I became a target for her lol. Another one showed her grand. narc. traits after a few months and I could not stand being in her company anymore. Then another one ended up just drinking and smoking pot all the time, and I don't enjoy being in the company who can't carry on an intelligent conversation. Where are all the people who actually want to discuss interesting things and get involved in projects with me? I dunno.

Dr Grande, one thing I wish you had mentioned in this video is the debate amongst scholars in the 80s when DSM III was being written up, around these two constructs. Salman Akhtar wrote at least one, and I think several articles on this issue of differentiation of Schizoid and avoidant PDs.. something to track down for anyone who is more interested in this issue. Akhtar also has written some interesting stuff on schizoid PD and what it feels like.

Hello Dr. Todd Grande, I have lots of questions about schizoid personality disorder: 1) There is a book called '' Emotional Dumb: An overview of Alexithymia by Jason Thompson. He says that alexithymia is different than SPD, I would like to know if there is a difference Between the flact affect of SPD and Alexithymia. 2) If schizoids have a flat affect can they cry, laugh about a joke, something funny?, feel guilt, fear of People? Do they really get to bond with some People if they go to therapy? 3) About the causes of SPD, I have read that Schizoid, Schizotypal and Paranoid personality disorders share genes with schizophrenia, I ask this because some other articles says that some risk factors are emotional neglect in childhood, childhood abuse or an enviorment of emotional coldness, so my question is, if that's true, Wouldn't be all children who have suffered from childhood emotional NEGLECT had SPD.? 4) Dr. Jonice Webb talks about alexithymia as a result in many cases of childhood emotional neglect. I would like to know your opinion. Thank you.

If you only meet some of the mandatory criteria for a diagnosis then you don't meet the requirements. The DSM is also not a self-diagnostic tool. I meet some of the mandatory criteria to be a member of the US Senate. That doesn't make me "a little Senatorish" or "a mix of auto mechanic and senator". Logically, mandatory requirements don't work that way. Different diagnoses have similar criteria, comorbidity effects how symptoms are expressed, and none of us are self-aware enough to objectively evaluate our own behavior to the degree clinical diagnostic tools require.

Hi, I would say that up to 70% of symptoms of SPD I have but some are very mess up like emotion - I have always though about myself as a full of empathy person, but was heard many times by my very observant partner that I am like psychopath - no emotion at all. I miss social interaction but at the same time I cannot build them up or after 30 min I loosing interest ( and of course people see that I do not participate fully - always on the side). Same hear from my sisters - building some wall. My partner tried to get to my core. I tried to change but it's like a gum - I stretch a little and get back where I was. It like subconsciously I protect my true self ( which is 13 year old child) and nothing can change it. I pay my bills, I am independent, I do career, but I am childish in some way. I am scare ( deep inside) of real responsibility such as being parents, marriage etc. Unfortunately, it has a very bad impact on my relation. I play "home" , I think I do everything what life together required, but I am often off, I do not run life together. I am feeling sorry that my partner invested 13 years of his life to be with me and now ..I did not know. And as I am getting older I am getting tired of playing. Yes, I daydream a lot. At the same time I don;t want go to psychiatrist as I don't want have any this kid of records. What is wrong with me?

I have something similar to schizoid, emotional alexithymia, makes me feel apathy to the point I’m indifferent to sex. I thought I had social anxiety but the fact that I have emotional alexithymia rules that out, have I experienced shame under social situations?Of course, but that doesn’t rule out emotional alexithymia as apathy that is a result of alexithymia is there, therefore it’s like a form of schizoid syndrome.

I think I went from Avoidant to Schizoid... I still have avoidant traits, they're just covered up by this apathetic fog that I can't break through. I still have borderline traits too, and that's a really weird thing to experience. It's also weird for others. When my face goes from nothing to rage in 0.5 seconds and I accidentally hit their head with a bottle. :( I need help. I've been in therapy for a year and was in therapy for 4 months before that... neither CBT nor psychodynamic is doing it for me. I heard psychodynamic was best for this kind of dissociation / detachment which is why I'm doing that now, but honestly it doesn't help me manage day to day... not sure anything will.

I am a diagnosed Schizoid. Nothing that you described comes close to describing the disorder as I experience it or as the DSM describes it. The Schizoid apathy is not a fog that covers something else. It just is and there isn't much else no matter how deep you go, no matter what happens to you, and that is all there is for decades with no real change. I encourage you to keep looking and continue counseling to find your answers.

So if I meet all the criteria for SPD, that doesn’t necessarily mean I have it right? What is required in order for a diagnosis (or lack thereof) to be determined?

Very interesting topics. Especially the reasons behind both disorders. I find that my anxiety to please everyone wears me to the bone. I like people, but in small doses. Long visits are mentally exhausting and I feel like the longer the visit, the more mistakes I have probably made and I spend the rest of the day second guessing myself. I grew up having to keep my narcissistic father pleased every changing minute. He was self-involved, self-pitying, critical, demanding, capricious and had explained to me when I was a child all the ways that women are worthless and disloyal and use a man just to get what they want. I spent 58 years trying to make sure he wouldn't think those things about me. He passed away seven years ago but I still feel like I need to please everyone and in an hour I'm worn out and rattled from smiling and feeling inept and just want to escape. I wonder if I am in turn wearing everyone out.

Is it possible to shift from borderline to avoidant and then schizoid? As someone already suggested, it may be that too much stress kills or lock emotions and desire of them too far from being experienced... I'm confused because I see myself consistent with all three disorders in different periods and I feel the difference is just contingent

I have Asperger's and BPD when I was younger. I grew out of BDP. But later in life I think I developed APD as a result of some major emotional trauma. Now I like being on my own. But I think life can throw some big ones at us at times, to the point emotions are blocked or something dramatically shifts inside of us.

@AliaMasotti
@AliaMasotti 6 жыл бұрын
How would you describe how you shift between the three? After a month I doubt I have a diagnosis and maybe some traits belonging to these disorders. My case is that the lack of even normal emotional life started right from childhood; I had intense emotional episodes twice during high school and then three in in my 20s, during the last 3/4 years. They are extremely occasional and even if they have BPD features you need a consistency over at least 2 years in order to be diagnosed. The rest of the time I've been more or less numb towards people, activities, desire and motivation, the only thing being that I wasn't very aware due to social/family pressure. I think boredom and a lot of "mental space" made me wear "fake" mask of desires and duties. In fact the enthusiasm of 99% of them didn't last for few weeks at most. Now I'm a deep process of acceptance because I'm kinda close to the childhood origin af all this, and to me is very easy to embrace my "peaceful schizoid" side. The origin seems to hide a enormous pain and I'm not sure if I want to let it emerge. I'm more interested in investing in those things that really make me happy and peaceful. Anyhow, for all my life I experienced emotions as something else from me. Also, I avoided trigger situations for different reasons and as reaction of specific things, not as a regular pattern. Usually I don't avoid, simply I'm not interested and am not emotionally affected.

This does relieve the burden of self labeling. Example: If a child is moderately extroverted to say the age 12 years. (This could be any childhood age for others) Then a family tragedy occurs the same child could become more avoidant or change their self evaluations to less positive, and that is ‘avoidant.’ If they are allowed or encouraged by others to keep the newer negative beliefs they become even more socially avoidant. However, I think you said in a previous video that avoidant children might study by themselves which leads to success. So they get a ‘payoff’ by being avoidant even though they remain socially damaged. (I think you are leading me to social insights about many people....Sir Fleming, the man who discovered precursor to antibiotics was socially avoidant, and really messy. The discovery was by a sort of default method. But it has saved billions of lives across the world since the middle 1940’s. Now if I can just remember to apply all this.)

I don't like that just because these behaviors are different from the average, that they are called "disorders". For instance, I am Schizoid and some of "our behaviors" seem healthier than the average to me, such as not caring what people think of us. For so much of my life, I could not figure out why "the bandwagon" was so sought after, even though it involved clearly flawed perspective. Glorifying ignorance and spending hundreds on shoes were prime examples of what children loved in my childhood and when I get older I find out that my aversion to their activities was due to this classifiable behavior of mine that has the word "disorder" attached to it. And that the people who were drawn in to ignoring their education and getting their parents to waste their income on shoes were "normal". Certainly there are things that impede me in life, mostly due to misunderstanding in the workplace, but I don't think it is more or less healthy overall to have such a "disorder".

kiraPh1234k They're considered to be disorders because they impede the individual's daily living. Schizoid people often are unable to feel the normal range of emotions and have difficulty reacting appropriately in social situations because of their diluted or absent emotional responses.

There is a theory among some (key some) clinicians that they are similar or the same. There is no hard data to support this. The idea that they are the same or comorbid when their criteria are so mutually exclusive makes no logical sense to me.

How to differentiate an introvert personality from Schizoid?
@dorothysargasso5585
@dorothysargasso5585 5 жыл бұрын
Non-expert opinion: you don't, because they are not both disorders and can happen simultaneously. Many people are introverts, a few of them are schizoid. If you need alone time, have a hard time socializing in the traditional sense etc, you are an introvert. If you prefer to be alone, are detached and unaffected by praise/criticism etc you are schizoid. Despite the seemingly common factor of being seen as a loner, each of them has many other contributing 'symptoms' and it is entirely possible you may be both.

Psychodynamic authors tend to disagree with the DSM criteria for these two disorders though, and people who fulfill criteria for DSM schizoid PD since DSM-III (1980) are so few that the very construct seems flawed. Traits of schizoid, schizotypal and avoidant PD constructs blend a lot more in reality than in the manuals.
