Simple logic: we use had been when there are two actions in the past.. For example, I had been there when she arrived. There are two things: 1) I had been there 2) she arrived. So when you are using two things subsequently, then use "Had been" in the sentence. It's not that much common but still you will hear it out there in the world.

Is the use of past perfect really dying? Take these 2 examples: 1. When we came to the cinema the film started. 2. When we came to the cinema the film had started. These two sentences convey two completely different meanings. Sentence 1 means that we came on time. Sentence 2 menas we were late and didn't see the beginning of thr film. And this is the main usage for the past perfect 'when we talk about one action in the past that happened BEFORE the other action in the past'.

As an English native speaker I can inform that, ‘Had been,’ is an active and essential part of the current UK, English language. Eg - He had been expelled from school because he failed his exams. She had been walking to work when she was mugged. They had been running so fast they both suffered cramp. Etc etc.

Thanks Gabby! There's just one point. When you say that the past perfect tense is dying out, and that you tend to use the simple past tense instead, you sound like they both could be used interchangeably. That said, I agree with your explanation that it's used to indicate that an action was completed before something else happened.
