My dad fought in the 1979 revolution, he hasn’t been in Iran since 1984. He tells me some insane stories about the father shah the son, and Khomeinis reign. My mother grew up during the opium crisis and went from wearing leather jackets to full hijabs so Iran is one of the craziest transitions of ruling. Shah celebrated the 2500 year history of the greatest known king. One of the most respected and admired king of the history on earth. The first ever king that INVENED human rights and many more. It`s so bitter that this celebration was used against him. This was only one of the events. When shah raised the price of oil, USA raised the price of aluminum, steel, spare parts first. Now your talking about Savak, FBI, CIA, SECRET SERVICE, MI6, etc. they are and were way more dirtier than savak when it came to national security. Why doesn't America talk about that.

Anecdotal Evidence: My mom protested in the 70's when she was in college against the Shah. I can't remember what sparked it. She told me Khomeini wasn't even in the conversation. Her father was decently connected in political during the Shah Era. From him she learned that the Shah wanted to kill Khomeini, but "certain people" said not to and exile him instead. Shahs memoir alludes to the similar interactions with western governments. Khomeini was possibly supported by JFK during the 1963 protests, and changed his mind according to the anecdotal evidence by the Shah. Iran and the West Relationship is difficult since the 40's Iran in 1943 "Invasion of Iran". Last Shah replaced his father. 1953: Coup to remove Mossadegh in 1953(CIA/MI6 planned 2013 released CIA classified documents). 1963: Protest first sign of Khomeini(Supposedly support by JFK - anecdotal evidence by the Shah). 1978-1979 Carter contact with Khomeini and possible support as he wasn't against the overthrow(classified documents released). Khomeini went very radical once he came to power, going against promises, and becoming something no once expected. Then you had the Iran-Iraq war which the "West." His Anti-West statements where probably solidified their. There is so much conspiracy and stuff straight out of spy film. At the time of the Shah Iran was the most powerful force in the Middle East, and it had the most valuable resource(oil). It is not unfathomable that the "West" wanted instability. The best part of the movement right now is that international community are seeing that the Government does not reflect its people, and it has pretty much been that way since the beginning. Conspiracy: The Islamic Republic could just be a plant for the "West" creating instability in the region to allow exploitation of resources in the area. It is not impossible as the "west" was involved with Saddam, Osama, Gaddafi, 1951 US' military alliance with Saudi. Post WW1/WW2 the Middle East started to become decolonized and countries were taking back their oil.

@@nostalgia545 I believe 9milj people rose against him because of his radical actions: replacing Islamic traditions with western traditions and forbidding certain clothing, basically somewhat like the communists but not entirely. Like the older gentleman in this video said, the shah should've let people be free, freedom of religion in particular (Most notable Persian polymaths in history were dedicated Muslims the likes of Avicenna), just like Turkey is now Muslims are as free as others. President Najib made the same exact mistake in Afghanistan, except he was a true commmunist, unfortunately for both leaders it was too late when they realized their own mistakes (Najib was hanged in public). Youd think they would know by now that forcing ideology or religion is a huge mistake. Of course there is the west playing its part to keep the region unstable in purpose.

When the US overthrew the democratically elected prime minister Mossadeq and installed the shah, this prevented democracy in the country while the west took profits from the oil. Oh god. THE SHAH WASN'T INSTALLED HE WAS ALREADY KING. The cia only helped the shah to get rid of a traitor who was trying to get power. 1) EVERY prime minister was democratically elected by the parliament. EVERY. But the shah still had the last world. 2) mossadegh put pressure on the parliament to increase his power, then closed the parliament (through a referendum ok, but a referendum where parliament members vote for the end of the parliament doesn't sound very.. democratic). In the end he jailed all of his opponents.

The Shah was indeed non religious however most of the Iranians were starving and the literacy rate amongst the people was only at 25% and the life expectancy rate was only 52 years. Only 8% of the university graduates were female. Only those with ties to the Shah and the monarchy enjoyed any privileges. Today Iran is indeed less secular, however the literacy rate is at 86% and life expectancy is at 76 years. And 52% of all the graduates are female.

It is called passage of time mate. You have to understand where the country was before the Pahlavi dynasty, and what they did for its development whole facing the challenges of being surrounded by Arab nationalism, Iranian tribalism, Bolsheviks to the north and religious push back internally. Iran would have been a far more prosperous place now if we stayed with the Shah. Regarding women's development after the revolution, that was really a happy byproduct of the Iran Iraq war. The same way the first world war contributed to women emancipation in the west. The Pahlavi dynasty really saved Iran actually. Not that it didn't have problems. But incomparable.

Please don't glorify the Shah as the newer generation forget why their grandparents were desperate enough to topple the Shah. Life was better but not by much. Remember same thing happened with Sadam Hussain where Iraqis toppled him in 2004 but now many regret and wanting to bring him back. If you're going back and reinstating monarchy, you would eventually go back to also having all those problems.

It all shouldn’t have been this way … the bakhtiari people gave the people of Iran the chance to chose a democratic leader and form a secular state…. It started with Sardar Assad and the constitutional revolution early 1900- which after he threw out the Russians and English the noble men of Tehran wanted a Pahlavi …. Fast forward bakhtiaris gave the people Mossadegh which the cia killed…. After that Bakhtiaris gave the people Shapour bakhtiar…. Somewhere the people of Iran need to take a good look at themselves for they have brought this upon themselves

Hi Patrick, I had a lovely time before Iran 1979 revolution as ethnic minority Armenian, but Muhammad Reza shah did some mistakes which Morteza has said about savak's stupidity who were trained by CIA but shah of Iran gives lots of opportunity to Mullahs which his father the great REZA SHAH put them in cage to created freedom for woman's right. Another thing is why we have to show others who who were we while no other countries try to do such party invited many leaders of states and offer them golden watch while we had lots of un educated or bad educated people which they thought they know many things.

What the Shah did in Shiraz, commorating the 2500 kingdom was good. But huge bugs a d mistakes were accompanied. The first was omitting the mere population as used to be in many other occasions. Taking the country to the gates of civilization could be a good idea. But what percentage of 35 millions Iranians knew a word of it? Moreover, the movement toward modernization was started whilst the infrastructurs were not prepared. The oil and many other products used to be exported but there were many sticky hands in betwen.

FYI - a additional difference between the Shah and Khomeini is that before the 1979 Revolution was that Iran served as the West's 'Enforcer' in the Middle East that even Israel had praised... Iran was so like the west and those that felt they were losing their 'identity' as Iranian Arabs and of their culture & religion was disappearing - this is part of the reason of the revolt and what we are witnessing today - today's Iran want inclusion of global trade and acceptance to respect their ways and rule of law... sure there are subjects that we can agree that is too strict and draconian etc. I would just give them time to change for the better as future generations can accomplish - there is no need for regime change - there is no need for color revolution - even as the Arab Spring operation had failed in some of the targeted states unlike what happened in others. The US would love nothing better to get back Iran and put it to work of their agendas - that has nothing really to do with democracy and freedom as even given is just enough to appear to be when it is an illusion of those aspects even in the United States - are we truly free and not subject to the powers that be?!

Not really, as a sunni muslim, I am muslim because I love everything about Islam thats why I am muslim. Shias understanding of religion is wrong. You should never give religious power based on bloodlines rather then merit. The Allah (swt) Prophet (saw), the ahlul bayt and sahabah had forsight that if they set a precedent of power being inherited by bloodlines, generations down the line, the leaders will be no Ali RA or Imam Hasan and Hussein.....it would lead to corruption and abuse. So they made sure it was based on merit, which is the sunni position. Now we see consequences of this false understanding....our sunni scholars are humble, thats why I love my hijab today, they made religion a beautiful experience to the point I love the hijab. Islam is Arabic culture. Not Persian culture. Why do you think that the Iranians/Persians still talk Farsi after all these Islamic invasions? Mohammed traveled through Rome, Persia and all these places and saw that these empires had a monotheism religion and wanted that for his people too to fight Barbarism and that is how Islam was born. That’s why it’s in Arabic. Arabs were truly violent and that’s how they spread their religion in the Middle East & Northern Africa. With brutal force. Read the history and see the truth.

@@sidohofman6835 The Holy Prophet (s) didn’t conquer any of these places. These were conquered after he passed away. Knowing history and dissecting history are two different things. The truth is you need to look at the science (data and statistics) in order to open your agugument, because looking at data things become clear to you, and you do not need to pick up Shah or Khomeini to verifying your argument. Having said that, during the 1970s, Iranian per capita was less than USD 500. During the Islamic Republic, the entire social and economic has remained near-to-collapse. Facts also tell you both the Monarch and Islamic republic filled the prisons with everyone who do not agree with them. That is a reality, and those who do not learn from their mistakes, the history will repeat with itself. Please at the statistics and data from international community and research organization for the sake of clarity. Be the voice of people.
