The reason why the Dome of the Rock was probably fairly empty when you went was because you entered as a non-Muslim during a specific time which doesn't tend to coincide with actual Muslim prayer times (according to the sun). When I went to the Dome of the Rock and Masjid-ul Aqsa, it was FILLED with people. You can pray at the Dome of the Rock, and the people gathered to pray went all the way outside the doors. Well that was my experience when I went in 2017.

The Temples were not located over the rock. Modifications to the Herodian-era floor of the plaza have all but hidden the correct location. It was rediscovered a few years ago when the wells started refilling, causing some tiles to be pulled up. The Sanctum Sanctorum is under one of the gazebo-like structures.

Very good video! My wife and I had the privilege of entering the Dome (in addition to the Al-Aqsa mosque) in 1996 and spent quite some time there! Sadly, the 2nd Intifada later prohibited non-Muslims for entry... It's great one of your references is Jodi Magness! My wife and I are currently on staff with her at an archaeological dig in Galilee (for the past 10 years) We heartily endorse her work!!!

The earliest mosques do indeed look a lot like churches. For example take a look at the Ummayad Mosque of Damascus. (Muslims believe Jesus will descend from sky onto the mosque's eastern minaret-known as the "Minaret of Jesus") Also, here is little something I once heard an Imam say regarding the "temple mount". (I'm paraphrasing from vague memory) _"When Umer(Caliph) entered Jerusalem, he entered in peace. Chief christian priest took him to the main church, and invited him to offer his prayers, but he declined saying'if i pray here, future Muslims will convert it into a mosque' and asked to be taken to the Solomon's temple. Was shown a pile of rubble instead. So he ordered construction. And then allowed Jews to settle in the city after a long period of roman rule_ _Jews call the mosque/temple/place haBet haMaqdash, whilst Muslims call it alBait alMuqaddas. It is therefore the same temple, that was prophesized to be built, and Umer, and by extension Muhammad, was the messiah who rebuilt it and allowed the Jews to live in the city once more."_

That's not possible. If Romans never destroyed Solomon's House of Prayer or God didn't will it to be destroyed. Muslims and Christians will be forbidden to enter its complex, because Jews consider it very holy. The "Rock" which everyone keeps claiming as the 3rd holiest site for Islam.... well this site is the no. 1 holiest place in Judaism. Everyone speaks of the "Rock" yet you forget to mention that 4000 years ago (2600 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) our forefather Abraham prepared his son Isaac for sacrifice on that rock and eventually made the covenant with God for circumcision of all Jewish males.... 2950 years ago (1550 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) Solomon The Wise built the first Temple on the exact site.... in fact the Al-Aqsa Mosque only exists because the Israelites had previously prepared the site for building.....

Entrance to the inner court of the Jewish temples was only permitted to Jews who had gone through ritual purification. If I'm not mistaken, the outer court was open to all, but maybe only Jews whether pure or not. There were a few rings, each getting more restrictive - up to the holy of holies as mentioned in the video. In current day Jewish holy sites and synagogues there are no restrictions on access, and non-Jews can even potentially observe during prayer services.

Well, a lot of churches, particularly Catholic churches Orthodox churches, and some Lutheran Churches don't allow unbelievers to take part in communion. That's the most similar thing Christianity has to not allowing non-believers to go to a certain place pr take part in activities. However, even that is not a universal thing, since most Protestant churches will allow anyone who comes into it take part in communion, though anyone who is an unbeliever probably won't get much out of it. Christians have no need for ritual purity, since Christians believe that the presence and spirit of God is in the hearts of all Christian people, not confined and Christians believe that we are free in Christ to go anywhere we please. After Jesus was crucified, there was a small earthquake and the shroud that covered the entrance to the Holy of Holies in the 2nd Temple was ripped in half, which is taken as a sign that that's no longer a "no-go zone," so to speak.

It is, like almost everything, still debated among Jewish religious authority, but generally speaking - there is no limit on gentiles joining Jews in prayer, synagogues and, when it was active, the Great Temple. There are only three limitations: Gentiles can't be counted towards the minimum of 10 Jews needed for "public prayer", they can't enter the inner circle of the temple, and they can't participate in the public reading of the Torah done on Saturdays (they can attend, but can't read out loud)

That theory makes no sense. If that was the case, why are there mikvahs and trails leading up to the mount? How do you explain the trumpeting stone found there? The Greek warnings to gentiles found there? Walls and stones by the Eastern Gate dating back to the first Temple Mount period? The beams of cedar from Lebanon dating back to first Temple Mount period? And much more archeological evidence. I personally believe it was not at Dome of the Rock though, but just a bit lower by Al Aqsa.

Please remember mausoleum of Suleiman the Magnificent is based on dome of the rock. (also the mausoleum contains pieces of black stone from Kaaba, which is stone worship maybe?) It could be possible the dome of the rock was built on an existing mausoleum. However I couldn't find more study on this.

I heard that the ummiyad khalifa who built it was not in control of Hijaz, was in conflict with it's rulers and did not want people from the Levant (who were loyal to him and many were new converts to Islam, some from Christianity) to go to pilgrimage to Mecca and be influenced to turn against him by the rulers of Hijaz. So, he built this shrine to give them an alternative for their pilgrimage. This video has evidence to back up the assumption. Thank you. Great channel too.

The dome of the rock (haram al-shariif), has nothing to do with the Umayyads. It was first built in the reign of Umar ibn Khattab (the 2nd Khalif after Abubakar) after the conquest of Jerusalem. Umayyads and other rulers may have extended or rebuilt after earthquakes on various occasions.

Masjid al-Aqsa isn't a building, it is a site, like Masjid al- Haram. Dome of the Rock is next to Masjid al-Aqsa. It is not Masjid al-Aqsa.

The first temple (Solomon's temple) was just outside of the City of David and uphill since the ascent of the Psalms was sung during processions. . The second temple (Zerubbabel's/ Ezra's temple) may or may not have been built in the same location or in the same design as Solomon's temple. King Herod the Great built the Antonia Fortress uphill from his rebuilt/refurbished temple. It isn't know if his temple was built around or next to the second temple. We do know that the temple platform (terrace) was expanded and that the courts were enlarged. We also do not know the exact design of "Herod's temple" The diorama in the archeological park in Jerusalem was the archaeologist's best guess regarding the style of the temple (designed like a Canaanite building of the first temple era). The attached Fort Antonia, in the display, is not proportionately big enough to have housed about 6,000 Romans, their stores of food, weapons, exercise yards, etc.. Some people think that the area of the Dome of the Rock is the Antonia Fortress and that the temple was located further south.

A correction (1:19): While the Umayyads did build the Dome of the Rock, they did not take control of Jerusalem from the Byzantines. That was the second Caliph of Islam: Umar ibn Khattab. He was not from the Bani Umayyah tribe. The rule of the first 4 Caliphs is not considered to be part of the Umayyad dynasty which began with the first Umayyad Caliph: Muawiyah.

I have heard it said that the "Temple Mount" was in fact not the site of the Temple but the massive Roman Garrison Fort, that building and engineering works attributed to Herod, around Israel / Palestine, were in fact Roman works, done around his time in 'office' for the sake of their infrastructure of occupation. It is suggested the true Temple Site is in fact outside the Mount, in the City of David area. It is also suggested that a Church stood where the Dome of the Rock now stands, marking a part of the area of Roman control where Jesus, Yeshua, was taken before his death. What do you think?

Over time, I have become convinced that the Dome of the Rock essentially preserves a 2nd century building constructed during Hadrian's re-founding of the city as Aelia Capitolina . It would have been part of the temple complex to the Capitoline gods and was repurposed. To keep it short, there are three major things that point to this: the current footprint of building on the Temple Mount match the Capitoline Temple complex at Baalbek built at the same time, the columns capitals in the Dome are from the classic empire and not mismatched so don't appear to be spolia , and photographs of the building without tiles when under restoration show a distinctly 2nd century Roman look to the construction vice a late 5th or 6th century Eastern or 7th Muslim construction. No churches seem to have been build on the Mount and even the great Nea Church built by Justinian was not built there (which seems a bit insane considering the huge substructures they had to build to get level ground for the massive building).

Ash, you might be right. This temple screams Hadrian-era architecture. He was famous for building temples with domes so light would filter in and mark a specific location or statues of gods at specific dates of the year. The windows at the top are a dead give away that this was its original purpose.

I hope the Holy Temple is rebuilt as soon as possible. Whithout it the world is incomplete. And there's no radicalism about it. Jewish tradition needs a functioning temple to be whole. And no orthodox Jew disagree that the temple must be built in that exact spot. The only discussion is how.

Mimonides writes building the Temple as a positive commandament (so we must fulfil such commandament) and the Jerusalem Talmud says the Temple will be built before Messiah comes. There is even a Midrash that the Messiah will reveal himself on the rooftop of the Temple, which means the Temple will be rebuilt before he comes..... If you want more sources, see Navhmanides, Ramhal. A midrash will miraculous doings can't deny the fulfillment of a commandment from the Torah. If such a contradiction happens we MUST understand the Midrash figuratively. Btw, the idea that the Temple will descendents from the sky is also a minority opinion of Rashi. And there's also a discussion if such an opinion is valid in Halachah bc it is written in his commentary on the Torah, not on any Halachic work.
