I get what you mean, but a stadium isn't just a place for sports. There are plenty of months football isn't played there and even in a full regular season, the game is played their only 8 or 9 times a season. Having it covered could mean more concerts, more events that normally couldn't held there because of weather. From a business point of view, having a roof increases your chances of generating revenue to pay for a building that will cost billions of dollars.
@osaji9228 ай бұрын
Not only should there be no roof but they should replace the artificial turf with natural grass.

@@lightxgrenadeBut there are already a glut of arenas in the area that already host indoor events in the winter months, including but not limited to the Prudential Center and MSG which have better public transportation routes and located in city centers. There's not much added benefit for a roofed stadium outside of a gaunranteed super bowl and final four ever 5-10 years at best. The Jets/Giants pondered exactly this back in 2007 and the benefits did not outweigh the cost.
@lightxgrenade8 ай бұрын
@reverend_wintondupree The main reason a roof wasnt added was because they couldnt agree on how to fund a roof. While roofs are still expensive, the cost and tech for building one is better now nearly 20 years later. Additionally MSG and Prudential both have seating capacities below 20k. Metlife - like most football stadiums - can seat over 80k. Even if you sold out only half the stadium, it still be more than double the capacity of either of those. Like I said, as a football fan I like not having a roof. I think it offers a homefield advantage. But think of it from the perspective of a business, if you believe something will add a substantial return on investment, it will be considered.

NYC is unfortunately its own worst enemy in this situation. Whenever a team moves the New York, 90% of the time they're talking about NYC, not Upsate or Long Island, and the problem is that NYC is overdeveloped. The only way to build anything in NYC is after you demolish something else, and with NYC's massive population (even with an exodus from the city thats been going on for 3 years now) there is very little chance of that happening. On top of all that, because of the massive population and lack of space, everything is expensive as hell in NYC. This is why so many NY teams play in Northern New Jersey, its cheaper, its close enough to NYC, and theres more room to actually build something.
@sfdko32918 ай бұрын
"Soo many teams play in northern jersey." No, only the Giants/Jets do. People count the NY Red Bulls but I alway counted them as being part of Jersey. Personally - I just don't get why anybody hates MetLife Stadium. It's a clean, well balanced stadium with the most spacious leg room seats in NFL. More than enough Concessions and 1st class restrooms to avoid long lines. It looks great when it lights up in home team colors during prime time night games. It even has the most sell out crowds. It all adds up to the fact that MetLife Stadium is the most successful and most comfortable stadium in the league. It's even been ranked as the best tailgating venue. Those credentials make it among the best in the NFL. If many can outweigh all that with the arguement that they don't like the color of a gray design building, Then it all proves just how shallow alot of people really are.
@johnsamoilis63798 ай бұрын
Exactly! Its the best tailgating because it has plenty of portable toilets, charcoal disposal bins, garbage bins, the parking lot is fully paved with high quality asphalt that doesnt even have a crack, and there are pedestrian walk ways through the lots to avoid cars and they are wide enough that some people tailgate on part of the walkways. The stadium has free shuttle busses to/from racetrack which has a fanduel sports book. There is regular service to the stadium parking lot and the American dream parking lot on NJT bus. There is gameday train service a mere 20 yards from one of the main gates for events that expect over 50k in attendance. There is also non stop bus service on Coach USA to/from the PABT. The second biggest mall in the USA is connected to the stadium via pedestrian bridge and has bars and resteraunts for those who dont want to tailgate. It also has an H mart with a full liquor license so you can buy more beer and liquor if you run out at your tailgate party. Its easily connected to route 3, route 120, and NJ turnpike, with the Parkway, rt 17, and rts 1&9 all nearby via car. It has or will host all of the biggest events and sporting events known to man. Super Bowl, FIFA World Cup, Copa America, weekly NFL games, it held 2 WWE wrestlemania's.

With the Jets you are glossing over a couple of points, they moved their headquarters to New Jersey. They built a huge modern headquarters and training facility at the former EXXON campus in Florham Park. They all live in New Jersey, the Johnson family is a New Jersey family. Johnson & Johnson is headquartered in anew Jersey. Half the hospitals in the state are named after Woody Johnson’s Grandfather. They moved to Jersey after they bought the team from Leon Hess. There’s no way in hell any of the owners, management or players want to live in Queens or Long Island. And they’re not going to commute from anew Jersey to Queens for games. The current site of the stadium is ideal because it’s more convenient to the majority of the residents of the region who either live North, South or West of Manhattan. A stadium in Queens would only benefit those coming from Long Island which is not where the majority of the region’s population lives. If the stadium were built in Queens the majority of fans heading to games would have to drive through Manhattan, the Bronx or Brooklyn to get there. It’s not happening, I’m not saying MetLife is perfect, but its location is superior to Queens. It’s not a bad stadium, the NHL Winter classic held there this year was huge success, you’re not doing that in a dome. And it’s going to hold the World Cup finals. When time for a new stadium comes it will be in the Meadowlands. Keep in mind, in. The NYC region New Jersey is gaining population while New York is losing population. And we’re are most NY’s moving, New Jersey.

I get that the study on turf doesn't show significant difference in injuries but IMO it's not the whole story. Say a player catches their cleat on turf and sprains their ankle but not enough to miss time. The next game they're on a grass field and they go to make a routine cut, but that ankle is slightly weaker now and they end up with a serious sprain that forces them to miss time. On paper, the injury happened on grass, but it was a result of having played on turf. I'm not saying this is definitive proof, but to me the idea that the differences are negligible seems like it isn't accounting for the cumulative effects of playing on turf.

The Jets and Giants own the shell company that owns the stadium. It cost $1.6 billion to build, which is crazy considering it has no roof. It was funded by both the Giants and Jets. Neither team is going anywhere. It's not like that will threaten to leave nyc and dramatically decrease their franchise value.

You make a great point at the top of the video. Possibly the most confusing/downright stupid things about MetLife Stadium is that it's just an upgraded version of Giants Stadium. It's like they looked at what the Yankees did recreating Yankee Stadium and the Mets did recreating Ebbets Field and said "oh, well we just need to do that." Only problem was Giants Stadium was always a dive, just an average industrial stadium in a parking lot. No one had a sentimental connection to it and the building they made is just a larger, more cavernous version with worse views and less charm (if you can actually have less charm than OG Giants Stadium). I hope one day the Jets will have their own stadium in NY, but I'm not holding my breath.

I could see them going the Arthur Ashe Stadium route and installing a retroactive canopy or retractable roof, but otherwise, this stadium isn't going anywhere for a long time. I knew when the plans to build Metlife Stadium came out that it was a stupid idea to build an open roof stadium in an area where winters are pretty brutal. It makes sense to build a roof environment for football if you want to host a Super Bowl or be in an area like Florida, where the weather isn't that bad in February. You brought up the Yankees Stadium being open because the baseball season ends in November if you play in the World Series. It is closed for the winter and only opened for a few events. Also, SoFi Stadium is owned by Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams. Dean Spanos, the owners of the Chargers, is an idiot for moving the team to a city that really doesn't care about the team and can't really move back to San Diego without selling the team or face the consequences.
@lakerskid20138 ай бұрын
Don’t forget the open air stadium idea for SoFi, that was stupid in its own right considering they actually had a time with a game where there were issues with the heat since there was a game that had extra hot weather than usual. Had they not gone open air and had glass paneling to cover those areas (kind of like doors like AT&T Stadium) then it wouldn’t have been an issue. You’re definitely not wrong about those winters in the Northeast, and while I’m from the Midwest I’ve known for many years about those Nor’Easters

@@lakerskid2013 I attended the inagural game of AT&T Stadium when the Giants beat the Cowboys. I got a football signed by Emmitt Smith and Marcelus Bennett. I will tell you the city of Arlington, Texas bent over backward to give Jerry Jones what he wanted in that stadium. The Jumbotron at that time was ridiculous in size, but new stadiums began to make better designs in the technology, and the exteriors looked better. Not to say AT&T Stadium is bad. In fact I'm honestly mad that the Giants didn't think to build a roofed stadium in the area they played and knowing they would hinder their possibilities to host more than one Super Bowl.
@lakerskid20138 ай бұрын
@@nyfinest017 I bet that was a heck of an experience. I live in Indianapolis and haven’t visited Lucas Oil Stadium yet (only lived here for 6 years) but it’s a place I want to experience for sure. As far as traveling goes AT&T Stadium would be one of those places for me. I think that is an underrated aspect of arenas and stadiums, the tourism aspect alone. If they’re well designed with enough amenities, go through proper maintenance and inspections, and have good products on the field/ice/court then any place can last forever.

As long as there are two teams playing in MetLife Stadium, they're not getting natural grass. It'll be a cow pasture by week 4. Grass needs recovery time after use. With the Giants and Jets there, it'll be in use every week. It'll start to look like Heinz Field, with divots and missing turf all over. Then the players will whine about rolling ankles and twisting knees in those divots.

@EmmanuelConstant7478 ай бұрын
Domes are highly overrated. In Fact - It's nothing more than a minus in the NFL. If you've been paying attention, You'd know that when a dome stadium is new - It's usually fun in the beginning, But after a time - It starts to feel like an oversized arena more than a stadium and it starts to feel boring. It happened with AT&T stadium and alot of other stadiums. Survey studies show Dome stadiums don't draw as many sell out crowds as the open air stadiums. Real stadiums are made for real outdoors. Dome stadiums can draw more events, But it doesn't profit as much for the city considering how much tax dollars has to be put into it. Tough to build dome stadiums withou involving tax dollars - Especially in todays NFL. No stadium in any sport has ever profited high revenue as a result of a dome. NFL Dome stadium teams don't often win Super Bowls. It makes no economic sense to have a dome to a stadium - unless of course its frigid Minnesota or Greenbay weather. New York, Philadelphia, Denver and other cold weather cities have proven they could handle it. WWE Wrestlemania has drawn some of its highest ratings at MetLife stadium. Recent NHL games have also gotten rave revues at MetLife stadium. Final Note - If the Jets want to build an identity, They don't exactly need a stadium in New York to do it. Just win Super Bowls. The 49ners have built an elite dynasty character during the Joe Montana era at Candle Stick Park for years. Super Bowl titles are worth more than a stadium.

Although Seattle doesn’t really snow like the other cities you mentioned it could be an honorable mention for the simple fact it rains there all the time. I know that combating rain is easier than with snow (especially since places like Minneapolis, Green Bay, Detroit, and Buffalo get crazy amounts of snow every year) but Lumen Field has still been going strong as an outdoor stadium in its own right in a city where one could argue about a domed stadium being placed there also.
@TRivz7773 ай бұрын
The Jets need to act fast and get out of Metlife by 2030. They need their own stadium and it needs to be a dome. I want the crowd noise to be as loud as possible and the fans to have a great experience. Theres too many crappy, rainy, windy games from September through November that silence the crowd and have bad teams come in the building and win. Nothing about MetLife feels like home field advantage other than opening day. Enough is enough.

The new one, while ugly, is modernized. NJ doesn't want another super bowl. NYC hotels, restaurants, shows, etc made all the money while NJ paid for police and other preparations. Do you have any idea how much a domed stadium would cost in this area? Who do you think will pay for a new domed stadium? The Jets, Giants, NFL and NJ shelled out a lot of money for this one. I can tell you're not a taxpayer here.
