So what is the Halfie Project?
If you've seen a few of our videos, you've probably guessed we're about culture, the mixed race experience and multicultural backgrounds. Some of these stories are sad. Some of these stories are funny. Some of them are complicated. But they're all shared here with respect and a hope for acceptance.
Thanks for being a part of the Halfie Project! If you have questions or want to share your story with us, leave us a comment below. Feel free to email us at thehalfieproject@gmail.com
Big thanks to Carpenter's Daughter Cafe (목수의 딸) for the location!

Looking forward to watching all of your videos. I married a Korean man. I am Vietnamese. So when we have children, they will have to navigate this identity path eventually. I hope that I can learn some wisdom from this channel and be able to show them a whole community that is welcoming and accepting of who they will turn out to be.

THANK YOU FOR WELCOMING ALL THE HALFIES!!!! I was born in the states, raised in Canada. I'm half Chinese-Filipino and Peruvian. Now married to someone who was born in Guatemala but adopted by jewish canadians. This is such a cool community! I was not welcomed really by both sides growing up so I found acceptance in others. I hope to be connected with others and their experiences one day! :) This is so cool!!!!!

This is such a cool channel. Instantly subscribed. My family immigrated to Canada when I was three. Though full-blooded Korean, I don't feel like it so I am happy to have found this channel. Thanks!

I saw you on another channel and subscribed here. I am a halfie who is over 60 years old. I was born in Korea but attended a DoD American School on a military installation. Most of my halfie school mates had American fathers who were white and black. There was a bond that did not separate us by color. We really went through a lot of discrimination and name calling by the Korean community. It was natural for us to gravitate towards Americans who were much more receptive towards us. One day in elementary school our principal, who had a Psychology degree gathered all the halfies for a discussion about identy. The whole class ended up with weeping, sobbing and outbursts of anger and rage. We had bottled up so much pain and resentment towards the Korean people, both adults and children who were persecuting us for being born the way we were. We were children who had done nothing to deserve the verbal abuse we received from them. Our hearts were in turmoil because our mothers and our mothers family whom we loved dearly but were also part of the Korean people and culture that were tormenting us. The conclusion of that meeting was "why did I have to be born half Korean?". It was a heart wrenching session and and the end of the day we returned home to our Korean mothers. I didn't care for Koreans for a long time and felt the adults were very cowardly to verbally attack children for not looking like them. All I can say now is " If I'm good enough for God (of the Holy Bible) to be born the way I am, I really don't need anyone else's stamp of approval. This life experience has led me to love others whom society does not find acceptable to their standards and are deemed unlovable. I have forgiven them and when they say I am Korean because my mother is Korean, I remind them that My father is American, I have an American last name and I am half Korean. I am the same racially as when I was a child. I don't let them define who I am. I know who I am. I am a halfie approved by God Almighty!Koreans have a history of cast system that were always discriminating even when they were the same people. Believe it or not, Koreans have come a long way, so with time I'm sure it will be much better. Much love and blessings to you and the people following your channel!

Such an interesting perspective from someone that's lived through it much longer than I have. Things are better in Korea now. Being half is more exotic these days. I'm glad that your principal gathered you guys to talk about identity. I think it's something we struggle with and something that parents (at least my parents) didn't talk about explicitly. I knew I was different, but I didn't realize how much of an impact it had on me that I had no one to look up to -- no one that looked like me. Maybe it's part of the reason I still don't have any role models. But I agree with you about God, and that's why things are okay and easier now :) God Bless!

@@christinastevens6200 Thank you for your endearing comment. It's okay to not have a human role model that looks like you or thinks like you. You are unique and wonderfully created for a purpose that no one else can fill. It had to be you! Born to parents of different races and cultures, to have the experience that is yours alone. As believers and followers of Jesus Christ, He is who we should strive to be like and love God with all our hearts, mind and soul and love one another. I pray that someone mature and wise in their Christian walk will take you under their wings and be a mentor to you. Much love and many blessings to my young sister in Christ!

Kudos to you.!! My dd is a half-Korean and half-Caucasian American. She is not even 2 years old yet, and the time has changed significantly past several decades; however, racism, identity issues that come with race, etc still exist to this day. Even though I've lived in the Caucasian-dominant parts of the USA as a full Korean since I was 13 years old while even my parents weren't here in the US with me, I fortunately did not have any identity issues myself since I've always looked at these citizenship, race, ethnicity... aka identity categories as nothing but merely social labels for societal convenience. They can never define who I am - or anybody - especially in this global world. While I hope to raise my daughter to have a similar mindset, however, most people do get influenced by these social labels and it's extremely hard not to. I believe channels like yours will be able to empower other "halfies" - whether mixed race or multicultural - and inform others. Thanks for creating this channel!

My children are half Argentinian, half Iranian and were born in USA. Because I was an immigrant to USA from Argentina, it never occurred to me that my children felt that they were “halfties?” But they are, specially my daughter. Thanks to educate me about this subject.

I have a daughter who is half Korean and half Italian American. She is only 11 years old so I guess she is still too young to question herself who she really is. We live in Southern California and we see a lot of halfies around here. Actually multicultural and multiracial families are very common . She seems so cool being herself. But I know in other states, she would find herself different than other people. As mother of a halfie, I will need to provide any kind of support when she is figuring out to identify herself and accept who she really is in healthy way. I really appreciate your channel because I know it will help moms like me and kids like my precious daughter. Thank you!

He is Half Korean and Half African American (born in Korean), I myself however am the same but also Mexican, so Korean/African American/Mexican. I love being raised with a mix cultures, but have also dealt with identity issues growing up. Nonetheless, I was happy to find out about the Halfie Project!! 😊

I can't believe this is a thing. I thought I was alone. I'm almost 50 years old, and when I was growing up, I didn't know anyone who was half-Korean, except for myself. How wonderful of you to explore what it means to be caught in the middle of two worlds, as you said- being both and neither. I am really looking forward to watching every single video. I stumbled across your Interview "Life out of the Moonies" and even though I couldn't relate to the actual story, I sat there in complete silence listening to your well-thought-out interview questions. I can't wait to watch more. I'm really excited to hear your experiences- especially since you're a generation younger than I am. I want to know how things have changed. When I was growing up in the States, for me it was more about denying the Korean half of me until I reached my mid to late 20's. Even then, both ethnicities, I felt, rejected me. To this day, I feel more like a novelty (living in the South)... a fetish for men, and an embarrassment to my Korean mother. Anyhow, it's nice to meet you and I can't wait to learn more!

Wow! This is exciting! I'm also Korean-American, raised without Korean culture or influence. Growing up, I felt I did not fit in & when I finally was able to reach out & explore my Korean roots...still felt like I didn't fit in. I think I've kind of carved out my own place in this world & raising "mixed" kids, I've been able to point out to them just how many of their friends are "mixed" as well - & of many other different races/ethnicities. They seem to think it's pretty cool, & I do, too. Can't wait to see more of the halfie project! :)

So happy I discovered this channel. I spent a big part of my life feeling like I have to choose the identity and I could not, because I am both and more than those both at that. Only several years ago I realized that the question I was looking the answer for should not exist in the first place: trying to chose just one identity means shunning all other parts of yourself. This would not make you a full person. Now I repeat after Trevor Noah: "Why do we say half? Why not, for example, "twice as nice"?" I loved this line!

My mom is a Korean-American who immigrated from Korea to the States at the age of 12, and my dad is American of Western European descent. However, I don't choose to think myself as being "half Korean" or "half" anything because I don't see myself as being two half-races combined, I see myself as being one whole race. Depending on the context, I might call myself an American of Korean and European descent, or a Korean-American with mixed heritage. None of these labels do a perfect job of encapsulating the complexity of my identities, but I do feel that some are more effective than others. I moved to Korea after college, lived there for four years, became fluent in Korean, and had an overall amazing experience there. I learned the culture and the language, but more than anything, I feel that I learned so much about myself. Thank you for creating this channel - I look forward to exploring it more.

My highschool sweetheart was "half White, half Hawaiian" (the %'s were different of course, but as kids that's what we said, lol). One of his sister's really struggled with "fitting in". We live in southern Arizona, so there are tons of Mexican, Spanish and Native American influences around us! So she said kids and teachers alike, always confused her for something she wasn't. And then she rarely met anyone of Island decent or culture! Her mom was "White", her dad was "Hawaiian", but what was she??? She was about 15 when she explained this to me... That was close to 20 years ago, and it feels like it was yesterday- that's how intense and deep her feelings affected me! And I tell this little memory as much as I can! I hated knowing she had to feel this way... 😔 I'm going to hunt her down and show her your "halfie" project!! Maybe you can meet her!! ❤❤❤

So nice of you and I totally get her feeling! Did you manage to find her? What a great mix! I'd love to chat with her. Being half Swiss half Korean with a strong American accent, Hawaii is actually the ONE place on earth where I feel at home! Even all my local Hawaiian friends tell me they wouldn't be able to tell I'm not a local if they didn't know me. 😜

I think it’s so cool what you’re doing with the project.. I come from a interracial background as well and I see on a lot of comments that Koreans are real harsh with their words yes,I could see where they’re coming from with that because they are pretty blunt and straightforward with their words but so are Americans LOL I am mixed with several different cultures but mainly American and Korean plus a quarter this a quarter that lol.. I always come back to the question would I be more accepted in Korea ?or here in The states ..where I was born and raised.. it would be cool to see some videos on mental health and health conditions too ..sending love to all halfies out there..
