Most AAA studios nowadays seem to be working under the mentality that they should release the game as soon as it enters the realm of "technically working", with not much regard to polish or quality assessment, which I'd imagine lends itself well to glitches. I don't count accidental one-off non-reproducable tricks as "speedrunning tricks" so much as flukes, so stuff like bit flipping don't count for me unless a speedrunner has done it deliberately. With that criteria, the hardest trick in speedrunning that I know of is the "Grand Memory Clobber" in Dragon View. It's been done deliberately by a human, so it counts as a "speedrunning trick", but it can't be reproduced in TAS, because it's so unlikely and not well understood.

As I was watching this, so many tricks came to my mind. Almost all of it seems impossible to me, but there are several tricks that I've added to my arsenal over the years. For instance, I had no idea how to beat the boss rush towards the end of Shovel Knight in New Game+. For context, you have to beat all the bosses in the game in a row with no health items. After watching the AGDQ run, I mimicked the runner and ended up beating it after a few tries. I've also learned Castlevania, Super Metroid, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls speedrunning tricks over the years, since I play those games near annually. This was a lot of text just to say, you guys should make a video about the easiest or most accessible tricks. I think that would be cool.

I'm surprised Dragon view's "Grand memory Clobber" wasn't mentioned. It requires a deathless, saveless play-through of about 45% of the game. The first Boss, Piercia (a giant scorpion) has a bug in her death animation which dirties up a byte in memory, which isn't cleared. This dirtied byte is the catalyst for what causes the glitch, and is cleaned up upon reloading from a save, which means you only get one life per attempt. after you defeat a boss later on, you are go into a room and greeted by dragon spirits of some kind... except that they use that dirtied byte, and all hell breaks loose. the game will glitch up tremendously. you could wind up back in the first town with 0 HP, dying as soon as you exit your items menu. You could end up with a black screen with the game LITERALLY laughing at you. and since you lose control, you cannot retry this, since you have no save file, and even if you did, that dirtied byte would clear up, meaning you only got ONE shot at this, before restarting. but if everything ends up right, you can get the credits. fair warning, NOT EVEN A TAS was able to pull this off reliably. The person who found this glitch, PJDiCesare AKA theSuperSNES, deticated almost an entire week of attempts trying to get this, before getting it on his 24th clobber.

I think werster’s HGSS all gold prints run deserves to be somewhere in the hardest trick. It would seem only he has done runs in that category, but his character movements and his personal actions he devised for the run require near perfect execution to maintain RNG manipulation for a large majority of the battle frontier. The craziest part of the run to me is around 8 hours in to his world record video. He has to do 49 battles for one of the prints, and there’s a modifier you can roll before each battle that can make the fight harder or easier, which occurs by pressing the right one as it scrolls through a bunch of different options. Not all must be perfectly selected, but at least half of these modifiers need to be perfect or else he can lose the run. Over 8 hours in. It’s wild to me.

Sadly the skip is ridiculously impossible, two setups have been discovered, one involving using three players simultaneously and standing on ice blocks on each other's heads, and another involving carrying over koopas from earlier parts of the level, and then doing multiple back to back air enemy freezes with the penguin suit, and both of these setups have only been proven to be possible with tas.

The thing I love the most about speedrunning is glitches. I was able to perform teardrop in Dark Souls 3, but what killed me was the route. I can perform almost frame perfect glitches, but I can't kill a crab :)

SIDELINES! This stuff is awesome. I love these videos, and the people grinding every day to find new ways to beat games faster are so dope. Personally, I have enough fun just playing the game. My days of obsessively working a game to death are long gone.

Thanks for the video, I loved it! :D To answer your question at the end, I really like to do glitches for fun ;) I only ever attempted 1 speedrun ever in a niche Mario64 category and got the world record on livestream, but that is the only exception and was glitchless. The most fun glitches I ever experienced are in the gen 1 and 4 pokemon games and Mario 64. If anyone ever wants to try out glitches, I recommend these games. The glitches are easy, harmless and a lot of fun, but the games also contain harder to perform stuff if you want more

Imagine doing wrong warp setups by abusing the game over screen. The steps include dying to an enemy, looking in a specific angle, standing in a specific spot, and accurately timing movement down to the half-second, but you're doing it blind with a hard 8 second time limit. That's Bell Sliding in Turok 2 Remastered, and you HAVE to do it multiple times during any%.

i just remembered a crazy speedrun video i saw: someone was playing the Japanese version of Majora's Mask. he went to the Graveyard area, did several maneuvers to get into a very specific position, then played a song while wearing the Deku mask. this somehow warped him to the ENDING!

I don't speedrun, but I like watching videos about it. One of my favorite parts is seeing the reactions when people get a first-ever trick or a world record. It makes me smile like crazy. The golden eye one was just fantastic! He just covered his mouth and pointed at the screen like "DID YOU JUST SEE THAT!?". Pretty neat!

1:18 - The word is "brothers" not "bros" even though it's spelled that way. The way you can tell is that there's a period after the word, which means it's an abbreviated spelling for the word brothers.
@kingcrimson41333 жыл бұрын
I and everyone I know says "bros".
@ThisSteveGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@kingcrimson4133 Well then maybe this will be like a Berenstein Bears thing for you guys, because you're all wrong. Go watch or listen to anything Nintendo has ever put out about the franchise and they will never say "bros" because that's simply not what the word is. You'll see it spelled as "Bros." and hear it pronounced as "brothers". It's just an abbreviation to save space. Another example of this same thing is Hill Bros. Coffee.
@moofree10 ай бұрын
@ThisSteveGuy Preach! Everyone in the 80s and 90s called it "Brothers", cause that's how the game name is actually pronounced. In Japan, in America, everywhere. We all knew that. Folks incorrectly calling it "Bros" nowadays makes these kinds of videos really annoying to watch. Akin to a video on 80s sitcoms where they keep referencing "Murr Belvedere."

I've speedran alot ( Especially Celeste ) so I found this video good for speedrun enthusiasts, but I have a big issue with this video. The issue is that the title is "What is the hardest trick in Speedrunning", while it should have been "What are the hardest tricks in Speedrunning of nintendo-published games". It is true that hard tricks are what makes Nintendo speedrunning so fun and iconic, but what about Portal 1 and 2 with their insane pixel perfect-rapidly done setups ? What about Mirror's Edge with its momentum-multiplying double jumps ( This one, if done on pc, can be way easier with the mouse wheel. I also forgot the name of the trick itself IwI ) ? I could give more examples, but I think that, and I entirely respect your work, this video is incomplete. Also, excuse me if my english is bad. I'm no more used to all the speedrunning vocabulary ^^
