This is one of the most brilliant technique videos I've ever seen

I must say I had never before heard this. I'll give it a go and we'll see (hear) what happens. I appreciate the clarity and focus of your presentation.

I think having fingers and thumbs is pretty important. Although not essential. You can get amazing prosthetics now.

Help me to understand this. How changing the point of contact from wrist area to knuckle area helps? It seems to me that it only provides additional friction because the movement still comes from wrist, doesn't it? Or perhaps you perceive knuckle line as an axis? In this case motion still comes from the wrist but the axis is no longer somewhere in the middle of the wrist joint; it is now somewhere along the line of knuckles? I am not here to critique the video. I just want to understand and ideally to learn something useful for me :)

Sure - so with any musical instrument technique, the margins for optimisation are incredibly small and often what we are trying to achieve is the most natural, relaxed, neutral position to build the foundation from. Changing your contact points changes the angles at which you hit the string, as well as how your hand rotates from the wrist. Not by a huge amount - but it's enough to actually make a difference and certain lines more playable. Technique is all about iteration, not repetition!

Troy has talked about contact points? Watch his video on Al Di Meola's motion, or his one on USX wrist motion (EJ, Mike Stern), he explains the setup needed for both. Also, almost all of the guys Troy has interviewed are naturals, the problem with just saying work out what is comfortably is that most people have been trying to do that for years with no results, these guides are useful for people. And what do you mean when you mention rotation? He doesn't advise that everyone needs a rotational forearm component to their motion? That is just one of many options...

How did all these phenomenal players ever learn to play so well before Troy was around All these sheep who can’t figure out how to walk and chew gum at the same time need someone to explain A sign of the times “ teach me now” “I want to be good now “ Just play the damn instrument, play and learn Been playing for 59 years I can hold my pick in any finger combination I can float pick, finger mount pick palm mount pick Play with a coin or a bottle cap this Troy Grady over analyzes every aspect therefore making the process less organic it also shifts the focus away from the music I can only wonder what his partner says in the bedroom when he whips out the whiteboard and the micro penis cam

I think most of them are thinking more about the muting rather than where their anchor point is.

My problem is that if I try to get my touching point closer, i mute the strings

@@ibai3138I am having the same problem. Also I seem to unmute the E.A and D string because this changes my hand angle in a manner that now my palm no longer sits on the low strings - not sure how to work that out

@@thatgirltannnI had the same problem .keeping my thumb straight and hold the pick firm solved it.🌼
