That depends. If Fleming rules then left for Lorentz force, right for induction. If your use palm rule (common in Australian schools) then it’s the opposite. See my hand rules video.

It’s a rheostat, and it allows a nicely controlled variation of resistance and this current. Old school yes, but perfect for this demonstration.
