One thing the campaigns disagree on is the real cost of our membership. So how much money do we put in and how much of it do we get back? I've been taking a closer look at some of the latest figures from the Treasury to try to get to the bottom of it.

We don't have to pay EU anything mate. USA pays $0.00. EU is running a massive trade surplus with UK so if they want to continue selling their stuff to us they can do business or - IF they tax our products, we tax their products providing Revenue for UK Treasury & making it profitable for companies such as USA Ford, USA Tesla etc. to invest & sell in UK
@w-james9277
@w-james9277 8 жыл бұрын
Phil Dobson Yes we do. If the referendum goes in favour of a yes vote, we don't suddenly be out. Negotiations will start and will continue on for years. In that time we will still pay as much money to them and have less and less of a say. Companies such as BMW as written letters to all their UK employees saying they could lose their jobs if we vote leave. They will move production of the Mini to an EU state as they won't have to pay import/custom fees. Nearly every corporation has done that as well. My dad spoke to the CEO of a large company based in London and told him that if we vote to leave then he will have to make 1/3 of his employees redundant. So along with paying the EU until we leave and then paying more in order to get a Norway deal plus the £ going down in value, leaving now is a bad idea.

the UK Treasury estimated the 2017 rebate amounted to €6.6 (£5.6) billion reducing the ultimate UK contribution for the 2017 budget to €10.4 (£8.9) billion. Although the rebate is not set in the EU treaties, it is negotiated as part of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) every seven years and must be unanimously agreed. divided by 52, that's about 110 mil a week.

Technically correct, but then we would not have access to the free market which has massive benefits (lower import prices, higher export volumes). You're basically saying "If I didn't buy food I would save so much money" Technically correct, but you would also starve and die. The EU contribution is the subscription fee we pay for the other benefits, it's not about the direct payment.

@@lukejones4040 I think you're confusing the membership fee for ALL benefits vs. Tariffs. For arguments' sake let's assume the UK get's no other EU benefits (investments, subsidies etc) and we focus purely on access to the single market. This membership fee is GBP 361 million per week? Because there are no trade barriers making it harder for the UK to export to the EU, the UK in fact exports over GBP 4 Billion to the EU each week. This is around 45% of our total exports. Equally, we get to import around 50-53% of our total imports from the EU as it is far cheaper than importing form elsewhere. This saves UK consumers money (as they are not paying the cost of any incoming tariffs)

Yes the EU is like a friend in a pub give him £100 pound and he gives you £60 back and asks for more the next week and tells you how good he was giving you that £60. But Mays list of EU demands were even worse as they would not only pay the £39 billion but also pay the EU on demand for items not included on that list. Those are the EUs own words on their web page. That means the only fare way to leave is on WTO terms which are fare and even to both sides, After all we have always paid more into the EU each year than we ever got out. Why have the BBC not made a vid of how mush we have paid the EU since we joined and how much we of our money we got back. Give us the total the EU has cost the UK tax payer since we joined. Any market needs producers, consumers, raw materials and trained workers. The Eu tries to creates this ecosystem, by supporting low income countries and thus creating a good consumer base where the economy can grow, and at the same time use their natural and human ressources. The UK is not used to this kind of fair economy, they are used to showing on the the shore of some other country with their army and claiming everything on it to the crown.

Under EU rules the UK banned smoking in pubs and other public places. There is no way such "country of smoker's" as the UK is could do such thing as not part of EU. Another huge EU benefit to the UK is agriculture benefit. Every UK's farmer will tell you that the EU has done for the UK's agriculture enormous benefit. All these debates, talkings and arguments about Brexit what is going on today, should have been happening long before Brexit. Now obviously British people know much much more about Brexit risks and the consequences of it. Back ten they weren't. The second referendum would be a fair solution for Britain.

Yeah, my bad, I'm just stating the flaws in your views, personally I would opt in so this topic is very opinionated, I just don't understand why giving money to a "foreigner" is worse than giving money to a British person, they both take your money. Britain is one of the most diversified places in the world, it's not like that's a bad thing. Anyways even is you manage to opt out there are many repercussions to your decision and many advantages, well mostly just more money, and if you stay in there are no repercussions, but you don't get any extra money and are "controlled by foreigners". Both of which offer there "good" side and there "bad" sides, personally i just don't want a visa to go on a holiday because I know that it is going to be expensive.
@blazednlovinit

Mastro Legend You're stating what you think the flaws in my views are, lets get it right :) When I give money to a more local economy I am much more likely to see the benefits of that money come back around to me, that logic works on the county level, the national level and the international level. Why is diversity a good thing exactly? You say that like it is part of the definition of the concept and that one must take that as the gospel. I don't care about repercussions because I have faith in Britain, we're one of the worlds richest and most powerful nations (especially for our small size), and in any case I'd rather live in a poor democracy than a wealthy dictatorship. The death of the rule of the people can never be a good thing in my eyes, sorry.

Wrong. It's not 161 million pounds a week because all the EU legislation politicians and businesses have to keep up with, all the unskilled immigrants that eat up welfare, non-speaking immigrants that eat up welfare and require translators and interpreters, excessive immigration that overburdens certain schools, hospitals and other public institutions, the different-cultured immigrants that cause police-requiring incidents, etc. are not taken into consideration. Plus, I am no expert on the matter, but I would need proof from a few resources that money isn't going directly or indirectly to the EU through other means.

Peter Lote Thanks for the link, but it provides no evidence against my claims. If the UK got to choose the better immigrants, then the statistics would only look better. Those kind of statistics look good because of chavs, etc. which is a completely different problem and that luckily there has also been a large wave of contributing immigrants from places like Poland. There are also matters like housing prices which could be better controlled if immigration wasn't completely uncontrolled. My point is, these kinds of programmes provide basic statistics which don't represent reality. The government sees unrepresentative statistics, people see reality.

These "EU State" payments to UK projects are decisions the UK government cannot decide to allocate directly, without the overhead of EU bureaucrats? The rebate is being discontinued in 2020. The forthcoming EU State budget, some €1.3tn for the next period five years will be funded by Germany and the UK? EU payments and its failed fishery policy have decimated the UK fishing industry by allocating the UK fishing ground quotas to French, Dutch, Spanish over-fishing. No, it is not just €350m it is in fact far more in the future, so controlling the UK tax-payers money for the UK should be obvious.
