'The poor are getting poorer': How cost of living is impacting those at the bottom

There was some relief today for those on the lowest incomes as the government confirmed they would raise benefits in line with inflation.

I'm a Brit living in Germany since 2010 and I run a small business here. Before Brexit I would order materials from the U.K. , the prices were competitive and delivery was quick. Since Brexit, it no longer makes sense to order from the U.K. The prices are not as competitive but the most problematic part is that delivery is often delayed considerably, due to customs issues. I can't rely on receiving orders on time. This causes real problems for my business as I order materials for specific projects with tight deadlines. With inflation currently at about 10%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about £600k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

In ancient Rome the citizens had the right to put down tools and refuse to work unless they were treated fairly. They'd literally all leave the cities and leave the rulers with nobody to rule. Alot of people are downing tools, workplace participation is declining and this will just speed it. Where i am most are working part time because full time isn't worth it and not viable due to zero hour bullshit, with wages stagnating and benefits increasing it's going to get increasingly harder to recruit staff as people are better off keeping hours low.

Practical steps: Vote wisely, Spend only on necessities, Pay attention to your health, Understand that cash only loses value with time and invest it, spreading your assets (locally and internationally) and while at it, always make correct inquiries so you don't throw your money in the wind or better still, get the services of an expert (that way, you give little room for error). Made my first million earlier this year this way and I think can comfortably wait out this "phase".. Good luck!

Even before this latest misery, Brexit then covid killed off my successful business. I was forced to sell my home after all my savings disappeared just trying to manage. I moved to Portugal and took every last pound out of the UK. The Tories have destroyed Britain and they've never cared about ordinary people. My electricity bill here has not increased (I don't use gas). I consider myself one of the lucky ones who got out just in time.

I am a 68 yr old widow in Canada and the feeling of hopelessness is palpable here. Food banks are stop gap at best as you are only allowed to visit once a month. I am currently renting 1 bedroom and a bathroom for $1100 month because a 1 bedroom apt. is almost $2,000 and my pension isn't even that much. Don't even want to get dressed many days.

Perhaps it's based on the Canadian neighborhood I live in, but as a coupled man with no children, I don't understand how people are still holding on or maintaining their lives. I see all these people driving around in $70,000 vehicles that cost $40,000 only 10 years ago. In large homes that cost $350+ a month to heat, $300+ to electrify, $250+ for water, with cellphones companies charging $90 a month per phone plan. At this rate, I can't imagine myself having more than one child. It seems that governments around the world have allowed the economy to be rigged toward the ultra elite or something. I mean, someone explain to me how oil companies get to keep $200 billion in profits from the las quarter alone, meanwhile governments are struggling to pay for the renewable energy shift? I think people are hungry for a reorientation of the terms of civilization/capitalism... Clearly, we are moving into some sort of neo-feudalism. It's getting to the point that average people can't even afford to buy a home, and our governments are simply refusing to solve problems for us. Why are forests being cut down for toilet paper instead of renewable bamboo? Why is it wrapped in plastic once, then again for each roll individually? How can something even that obvious still not be solved?

@@dancav66 This is definitely incorrect. Oil companies continue to receive huge government subsidies despite the harms they externalize on everyone else. Oil production is still increasing. Price manipulation occurs both as a result of corporate greed, subjective commodity speculation and OPEC cartels. It's also very loaded and inaccurate to state "renewables don't work", when in reality they are often the cheapest sources of energy available today due to exponential decreases in cost. But it is true, the system and infrastructure they require will need to be built. Frankly, what "doesn't work" is treating the atmosphere like a sewer, which in only the span of 100 years is rapidly destabilizing the climate and foreclosing on human prosperity. If these companies actually had to manage this pollution, say with carbon capture, you would then be saying "fossil fuels don't work". Any system that results in our extinction in such a short timeframe is obviously dysfunction of the highest order. Based on your statements I take it that you are both an expert in armchair economics and climate science though, so I won't bother trying to speak common sense any further.

@@mnkwazi I realize greed is the internal force that compels people to behave in such unequal ways, but it's not the case that it has "always been like this". Policy is an artifact of human politics, and the pendulum has swung too far in one direct. It can swing back the other way. Frankly, everything about our society is imagined by our species, our species can decide that rather than having reusable utensils, that instead we should dig under the ocean for oil, send it to refineries, ship it around the world, refine it further, add chemicals and form it into forks and spoons, then package it and ship it back around the world to be used once and thrown away. We can decide that this is "easier" when it clearly isn't. We can tell ourselves that renewables are too expensive, but then let fossil fuel companies off the hook for all the pollution they pump into the atmosphere. If they had to capture all that carbon, then we would say that fossil fuels are too expensive. So why in the world are all of these policy decisions allowed to exist when the system is headed for collapse? Why do fossil fuel companies get to keep their profits instead of taking them over and putting it all into the transition? They made their money, at what point does common sense and survival matter more than the profits of a few? this is what I mean, why aren't our global leaders thinking outside the box? Maybe instead of rising interest rates to cool the economy, they could have instituted an environment tax to fund the transition and renewable technology? Both would marginally slowed the economy, but actual good and prosperity would have resulted from a temporary sustainability tax. This is what I don't understand... If plastic forks can make sense, then why not obvious solutions that benefit mankind?

I’m sitting here watching from the US and can relate to everything those people are saying at that table. I live in Texas, so it’s not the cost of heating that was dreadful in the past year, it was the cost of cooling during a record summer where we had temperatures of over 100 degrees every single day for almost two months. I also relate to almost all my wages being gone after paying my monthly bills. There has been no extra money for anything. I hope we figure out a way to fix this mess.

Slightly different here in Australia. We had a really cold Winter, most of our homes aren’t really build for freezing temperatures so the heater was running all night and most of the day. Cost of living has skyrocketed, price of groceries have almost doubled. The politicians don’t care, they are on around half a million per year or more depending on what position they hold. Brexit is the big elephant in the corner of the room that no-one in parliament will talk about, even though its now been proven to be extremely damaging to the economy. The Office of Budget Responsibility has said that Brexit is costing the economy 4% of potential growth every year. I personally know of small businesses that have been bankrupted by being unable to trade with all those wealthy EU countries, such as Germany. We can't do university exchanges in Europe anymore, travelling is more difficult, finding employment in the Eurozone is more difficult if not impossible. The list goes on and on. Our freedoms that we had before have been taken away from us. I think even people who voted for Brexit are beginning to wake up to that fact. Whilst it’s a nice gesture, it’s not what is needed. Pensions in the U.K. are some of the LOWEST in Europe. You can’t gut them to pay for other things. What needs to be done is to clamp down on tax avoidance, buts that hard considering almost every PM since 2010 has been avoiding tax in some way. The current PM was apparently living in the US on a green card despite being an MP at the time! After that we need to reform income tax and make it fairer. The wealthiest in society don’t necessarily have an annual income that can be taxed like income tax. So let’s create a wealth tax that covers every way of making money not just income.

i have lived in both countries. what I have experienced is that health care quality is much better in the US because there are more choices and there is competition. It has deteriorated since Obama Care came along and again since covid. Even then it is still better. Yes, it costs more in the US but we aren't taxed through the roof to pay for it, whether we use it or not. There is less motivation to take care of your own health when you know that everyone else is being forced to pay for you. When i go to a dentist I decide for myself how much my care is going to cost and I can negotiate the price. Also, the dentist does a better job when the patient has choices. The govt. doesn't decide my treatment for me because I pay for my own. I pay for catastrophe and accident insurance and recognize that I have no entitlement to money that other people have worked hard for. The healthcare system could certainly be improved in many ways in both countries but governments are not the solution, they are the problem

Imagine the complete horror people with complex mental health issues or physical disabilities are facing. I am willing to bet the suicide rate will be massive before February and will increase. One woman I read about is worried she might have to do that with her daughter. Whilst waiting for my local bus I over heard a conversation taking place between two people on benefits and telling each other how the cost of living crisis is having its effect on them. One announced that he could now only afford to do the lottery once a week whereas before he was able to do it each day, the other agreed it was getting tough, she could only afford to go to Weatherspoons for breakfast twice a week now as before she could go each day. Surely the Government is able to get together with the benefits agency and stop this from happening to these poor hard up people on benefits. Hmm, I am disabled and receive disability allowance, my daughter is my carer and gets carers allowance. We've always been poor as a result and never have enough money to pay for luxuries such holidays, meals out, cigarettes [couldn't afford to smoke if we wanted to], a big car [we have a 20 year old micra] and certainly no fancy foods at home. But we budget and manage to eat well [if repetitively], tax and insure our tiny car - needed for shopping, pay phone bills, buy bottled gas - which had doubled in price in the past few months, thanks Russia - which gives us the means to cook. We have even managed to find better accommodation and we now live somewhere that not only has an indoor loo but also cold AND hot running water AND basic central heating. Higher rent mind you but careful budgeting means that is a small price to pay - and living for nearly 2 decades with only cold running water indoors and NO heating or double glazing isn't much fun, especially when you get ice on the walls and windows INSIDE and end up with NO running water because the pipe froze. Oddly, some of the loudest complaining here are the same ones who were happy taking months and months off work PAID BY THE GOVERNMENT because of COVID lock downs but now they are having to REPAY for all of that are suddenly not so interested [but still manage to find the money to pay for fags and alcohol/drugs and`/or the latest iPhone while loudly complaining that they can't afford to buy food and are busy blaming the government for their problems. Worse, many aren't bright enough to realise that it is a WORLD WIDE PROBLEM and there are many many people even worse off (at least I did have four walls even if there was ice on the inside in the winters but I look at the ''homes'' of many in Ukraine and they don't even have four walls, many have 2 or 3 walls and a huge hole covered with plastic and their winters are far colder than anything we get. I may have to budget severely to pay all my bills plus rent (it would be cheaper to have a mortgage but if you are on disability there isn't a hope of ever buying your own home) but at least my current accommodation is dry, and I don't have to put bowls under the parts of the roof that leaked like a river every time it rained (useful given the rain we've had so far this autumn) and while many layers will keep me warm I won't have to wear heavy winter coats and boots to sleep in like so many will in some countries.

I remember late 80s, 75% of our combined salaries paid the mortgage and poll tax only. The rest was to feed, heat, petrol, everything… it was the most difficult time in our lives. 2 years later we were divorced. 😢

As stated in other posts if MPs had any idea what it is like to live on minimum wage and on benefits I would imagine they would soon change their ideas however I’m starting to think this is a mass culling of the poorer in society. There is absolutely no doubt the cost of living crisis is going to cost lives and thousands upon thousands of them. The fact is at the age of 50 and above it is almost impossible to find work. I believe that a binmans hour is of the same value as the prime ministers hour. Time passes by at the same speed for us all and we all age the same. Start paying everyone the same wages for the hour that goes by in their life and not for the job they do and things would even out and be much fairer. Not everyone would be happy with this but it would be a fairer system.

The British establishment has always viewed the poor with contempt. What happened during 1918-19 really ticked them, now they have finally found a way to fully eradicate the working class. It's very hard for an older person over 50 to get a job, unless you have managerial experience.

Apprenticeships 🤣 They've systematically dismantled that for decades now. We have unskilled and inexperienced young people unable to make a living wage with a gigantic skills gaps in UK industry. Not to mention the massive brain drain since Brexit. It's high time that there was a government in power that can improve the nation. It feels far too much like a race to the bottom and has been since the early 2000s. Glad I left long ago.

In our hospital in the US, you can wait up to 11 hours to be seen in emergency. Unless you are a heart attack, gunshot victim, or pregnant woman ready to pop, you will wait. This is not just something in England.

I was sick in one city. After an 8-hour wait in the ER, my mom drove 3 hours to come to get me and 3 hours to drive me back to my home city from college and I went to the ER there. I waited 2 hours and found out I had an infection in my lungs and had to be checked in. A classmate of mine was sent home after waiting over 8 hours in the ER. Same hospital. We had to have the ambulance come and get her from our dorm 5 hours later. Found out she had an ectopic pregnancy and her tubed bust. We both had insurance as well. They just don't care

i KNOW the feeling I am in the USA, and i was already poor, but now it is much worse for me to buy anything.....so, i try to use every last scrape of food, even the peelings, and water in the pan to get the last of the grease in the pan and put it up to use in another dish, and the pasta and potatoe water to make into another dish or to make bread....it is horrible and it seems to be getting worse....take care everyone......

I'm in Canada. Financially right now, I'm ok - certainly not rich. When the kids were little, I did exactly what you're describing. We still had a house, warmth in the winter, food, but there were ZERO extras. Cookies? ya, sometimes, if I made them. ..Chips? Pop? Forget it!

Spread the wealth (Tax the rich). For those that say " They didn't earn it. " We inherit our wealth from our parents. Imagine the society to be a body. If one part doesn't operate properly it belabors all the bodies other functions. Right now the ones who do alot of work are sick and can't get by with full-time jobs. I feel empathy & sadness for us all feeling the inflicted nastiness of what’s being done to us (unnecessarily) . The piece on the food bank was what I expected & though many of you won’t like this, when the young woman care worker was mentioned, it was said she had 2 children, no issue with that. But then it was mentioned she was pregnant😭😟 Adults do need to take responsibility, she’s likely not to just suddenly have been struggling & the Dad isn’t mentioned ? Many years ago, this is why would not have a second child, so I practised what I preach. You can’t help many situations, but you have ability not to make it worse.

I agree. My only child was born in the mid 1970’s. Yes, we would have liked another child but I needed to get back to work as soon as he was old enough for school so I could help with the house-hold finances. I wouldn’t let my parents help, it was OUR decision to have a child therefore it was up to us to look after him & give him what we could afford. I expect I will be shot down for saying this, but I think the Government should spend money on the people who put them there & who’ve paid taxes to live here, not those who’ve entered the Country Illegally, yet are sitting pretty in 4 & 5* Hotels while the rest of us daren’t put the heating on in the evenings.

Even though what happened in September is having an impact on the UK economy in addition to Brexit, there's global issues effecting the economy the war in Ukraine, Covid lockdown in China, climate change because of droughts earlier in the year brought about food shortages and extreme rain also effects the availability of foods. Non weather related natural disasters can also have an effect on the global economy. None of these humans have been able to deal with or prevent. People say they want a Labour government but remember it was a Labour government when the financial crash in 2008 happened so even a Labour government isn't immune to economic issues.
